President Trump intends to sign an executive order that would put at risk federal research funding to colleges and universities that fail to protect free speech on campus, he announced Saturday.

“Today I am proud to announce that I will be very soon signing an executive order requiring colleges and universities to support free speech if they want federal research dollars,” the president said during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Oxon Hill, Md.

“If they want our dollars, and we give it to them by the billions, they’ve got to allow people like Hayden and many other great young people and old people, to speak, free speech,” said Trump. “If they don’t, it will be very costly. That will be signed very soon.”
Make Universities Great Again!

It will be interesting to see how this goes over with the "free speech is the foundation of our democracy crowd".

Given the dramatic increase in violent attacks on, and censorship of, anyone who dares to disagree with the mob this is an EO that everyone should support.

I can’t wait for the Church of Satan to speak at every college in America.
You serious Clark?

Please. If you're concerned about the church of Satan drawing in college age kids, that should speak more on how weak willed kids today are mentally than any threat you perceive from the church of Satan. I have a feeling if they showed on a campus, kids would probably go...more so to mock and get a look at the spectacle of it, than to actually take it up as their religion of choice.

I don’t think you’re familiar with the church of satan.

You do realize this will require the appointment of a speech czar, right?

Conservatives are absolutely ripped inside out by this guy. Total disgrace.

Sigh. Why do I do this to myself?

Assuming you are not just an alias for another drive-by trolling poster that received a time out recently (I know, I know...) and...

Assuming you're making this post in good faith and want to discuss it, and...

Assuming you're in favor if this...

WHY?

The specific details of Trump’s executive order are unknown.
Unfortunately the OP has some added editorializing opinion content that was not part of the original Washington Examiner article (which I edited out of the above quote).

How is this executive order requiring colleges and universities to "support free speech" in order to be eligible for federal research dollars be implemented and enforced?

Must a university give a platform or a forum to anyone or any group like PETA who demands it? Will schools have to allow White Supremacists or Nazis to hold rallies on campus? Will Liberty University be forced to let Planned Parenthood and Black Lives Matter set up booths on campus and hand out brochures?

And Hayden Williams, who Trump speaks abou,t was not denied speech by Berkeley. He was punched by someone who disagreed with his speech, but I don't see what Berkeley could have done to prevent that.

And I am sure Trump will want to pick and choose who is eligible for and gets federal research dollars, but unless this executive order is not applied evenly across the political spectrum I can't see how it would pass constitutional muster.

Obviously Trump is less concerned about free speech than he is about increasing the conservative voice on campuses.  I’m sure the order will try to make that happen.

I refuse to call these people “conservatives” any more. They don’t get to claim that term, and need to be called Right Wing.

President "Daddy" made the same threat in 2017 during his defense of Milo Yiannopolous after Berkeley llegitimately cancelled his speech due to security concerns. Trump should talking about increasing research and other funding to our Universities, not threatening to take dollars away. Asian countries have caught up in IT knowhow and research.
