What's up with Trung Canidate
Richard Obert
The Arizona Republic
Sept. 19, 2006 11:12 PM
Age: 29.
Residence: Phoenix.
Background: Played football and basketball and ran track at Phoenix Central High, before a college football career as a tailback at Arizona in the late 1990s. Was the 31st overall pick of the 2000 NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams, where he started only three games in three seasons. He contributed to the Rams' Super Bowl season in 2001 when he averaged 5.7 yards on 78 carries and returned kickoffs. In 2003, he started 10 of the 11 games he played for the Washington Redskins, rushing for 600 yards and one touchdown. Canidate has not played the past two seasons. A foot injury, he said, derailed his career, but he says he is 100 percent healthy again.
Currently: Working in real estate and keeping himself ready for another NFL shot. Recently had a workout with the San Francisco 49ers.
With the injury, have you thought of giving up football?
"I never thought of giving it up. With the great doctor I have, with Warren Anderson (a Phoenix strength and conditioning coach) and running as good as I have of late, I want to get back going."
What did they do to the foot?
"I had surgery (200). The odds weren't looking good. They had to re-break it. I had been playing on it for so long."
Did you think of going to Arizona State out of high school?
"I did. (Bruce Snyder) was the head coach. He was recruiting me. But I didn't want to stay close to home. (Then-UA coach ****) Tomey is a good family man. I still keep in touch with him."
You were the big home run hitter in college making big plays. Any regrets about how your pro football career turned out?
"No regrets. The Lord blessed me to play in college and in the pros. I've not begun to put mileage on my body. I've yet to show what I can do. If I had the chance, I know I can get it done. The thing that gives me comfort is I've been there and I've done it."
