Agreed, a classic case of pre-season, fairly meaningful for some guys, not at all for others. If i were a Ruud owner i would want to see him do well in preseason game three when the starters play a half.

Left tackle Luke Petitgout (back) likely will not play in Friday's preseason opener againt the Patriots.

Coach Jon Gruden said he hopes to have Petitgout ready by the second preseason game.

Linebacker Barrett Rudd (knee) should return in the next day or two, Gruden said, and it's possible he will play against New England.

The Buccaneers opened the game in a nickel defense to counter the Patriots' three-receiver set. That put starting CB Ronde Barber in the slot, CB Phillip Buchanon on the outside and linebackers Ryan Nece and Derrick Brooks on the field as the nickel 'backers. LB Cato June came out in the nickel. … With starting middle linebacker Barrett Ruud out with a bruised knee, sixth-year veteran Ryan Nece started at that spot, where he has been earning his stripes during training camp.

Interesting June was not in the nickel
