Tynes and Carney? What's up? (1 Viewer)

I know, I know...it's a kicker...but I had Carney for several weeks before the bye, and he was nails. I swapped him out then thinking that he'd be toast once Tynes came back. But Carney's still kicking away on a high powered offense. What do you hear? Is Tynes coming back or is Carney a good pickup?

Good question.

I've wanted to pick up Carney and drop Gramatica for the last week or so because the Giants have their bye out of the way, they play in a tough division with strong defenses, and their offense can move the ball into FG range routinely. On the other hand, I have to be somewhat careful with my moves as we have a transactional limit (20 ww claims) for the season and I don't want to waste multiple moves on a kicker.

Even if Tynes is healthy, I can't see Coughlin benching Carney for him. How do you improve on perfection?

Word is that when Tynes is back to 100% it will be his job again and most likely Carney will be cut.

In one Dynasty league I've got both on my roster just to be sure...most likely it won't be announced who's playing from here on out until Sunday morning so want to be prepared.

In another Dynasty league I picked up Tynes this past week as a preemptive strike assuming this week or next is when he is inserted.

Carney will rejoin his old team the Saints. Bank it

I think so too. As soon as Grammatica missed that one I thought Carney will be heading there in a week or two_One thing about this week with the Tynes/Carney thing.....if you don't have both on your roster you are going to have to play another kicker because they play Monday night and the inactives aren' t going to come out early enough. FWIW ESPN scoring has Carney with 0 pts this week and Tynes with 15 for our league scoring. Could change though.

I know it's not status quo to hold 2 Kickers, but this could be even more reason to roster both Carney and Tynes. Having two kickers on two of the most high-powered offenses in the NFL isn't a bad thing. At worst case scenario it guarantees you the starting Giants kicker who has been putting up the the top weekly kicker points so far this season.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I keep using that word? You mean, this one time....gee sorry.Yes, status quo means "to keep things as is". As in, most FF rosters will only have 1 kicker, and in most cases would be normal to just keep things as is. In this case it may be wise to go against what is usually done.

I was just quoting a line from Princess Bride, so I realize you didn't use the word more than once, I was just kidding you about the way you used the word. But, I still don't think that word really fits the way you used it. I notice in your explanation that you use the word "normal", as in, "...normal to just keep things as is." You could substitute "normal" for "status quo" in your original sentence, but I don't think you can substitute "...to keeps things as is..", at least not if you want to have it make any sense.Anyway, it wasn't my intention to be the grammar police or whatever, I just thought it might be a good time to use that quotation. I guess not.

should I start status quo this week, or is normal a must start?

Inconceivable!

To get this thread back on track, here's some relevant info that came out of Coughlin's presser on Tuesday:

link

One area that might need ironing - for the first time this year - is the kicking game. John Carney made good on his three field-goal attempts and is 12-for-12 this season, but his kickoffs routinely came up short and he put one of them out of bounds, setting up a Seattle field goal late in the first half. Carney is playing in place of injured kicker Lawrence Tynes (knee), who has been practicing fully with the team."It is a concern, there's no doubt," Coughlin said. "The ball out of bounds was not a good sign. We'll just continue to evaluate that on a weekly basis."
and from the NY Daily News:
The reason why the Giants couldn't cut (or IR) Lawrence Tynes played out on Sunday, when only three of John Carney's nine kickoffs reached the 10 yard line. In a game that's all about field position, that simply won't do. And Carney is 44 years old. It's not like his leg is likely to get stronger as the year goes along. I think those diminishing kickoffs will be the catalyst to get Tynes back in the lineup Monday night.
So Carney's FG kicking is not the issue, it is his shallow kickoffs.

:D Thanks for the info.

So then, I'm getting the impression that Tynes will be active and kicking this weekend? Does that mean Carney gets cut before the weekend, or do they keep him around. Makes for a messy kicking situation for fantasy purposes. Nothing like sitting around waiting with baited breath on the status of your flippin KICKER!

I'm holding both of them until this is figured out. We have huge points for kickers. Carney has gotten me 13, 11, 17, 14. 55 pts. < More than Jacobs, Lendale, Cotchery, Reg Wayne, or Steve Smith on my roster.

It's f'd I know.

Here's a little bit I found.....I don't know where this guy found this info but....

"Ok, I think this stuff about short kickoffs is BS. To prove it, I did some analysis.

Carney's average kick landing location this season is the 7.1 yard line, and the average opponent starting position is the 27.9 yard line.

To compare, I looked at Nick Foulk of the Cowboys who is supposedly one of the better kickers in the league. His average kick landing location this season is the 6.7 yard line, and the average opponent starting position is the 29.9 yard line.

I think Carney's fine."

The Giants are not in a rush to make a move just yet. I believe the extra spot is being held for when David Tyree is available. Tyree comes off the PUP this week and the Giants will have 3 weeks to decide whether to activate him or put him on IR. Until that time, it won't surprise me to see Carney and Tynes on the team together.

[vbd 101]But if there are other kickers readily available who can score similarly, it doesn't matter how many points he scores compared to other positions.[\vbd 101]

Looks like Tynes gets the nod in week 7.

http://njmg.typepad.com/trueblue/2008/10/t...-will-kick.html

Tynes will kick Sunday

Lawrence Tynes said after Wednesday's practice he has been told by the coaches he will be the Giants placekicker Sunday against the 49ers.

"I knew it last week," he said. "I'm very anxious to get going. I feel very good where I am at, and I just want to go out and keep doing what John [Carney] has been doing."

Carney was signed at5 the start of the season when Tynes was recovering from a left knee injury. He is 12-for-12 in field goals attempts as a Giant and will stay around, at least through this week.

The Giants obviously want to make sure Tynes can make it through the game before letting Carney go. That could happen next week if David Tyree is added to the roster before the game in Pittsburgh.

The Saints were working out Billy Cundiff earlier this week so they obviously aren't happy sticking with the rookie. Carney can't be released soon enough for the Saints to scoop him up. Hopefully the Giants will need to get Tyree on their roster and let Carney go before the weekend. The Saints have to be eyeing Carney if they are still auditioning kickers.

I'm holding on to him for another week or two and see how this plays out.

News Articles > Giants | Coughlin has not decided on kicker Published Thu Oct 16 3:59:10 p.m. ET 2008

(KFFL) Updating a previous report, Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said he has not decided whether PK Lawrence Tynes or PK John Carney will be the team's kicker for their Week 7 game.

I'm 98% sure John Carney will kick again this week.

Lawrence Tynes talked himself out of the job for the immediate future.

FoxSports.com reports that John Carney will be the Giants kicker Sunday.

Lawrence Tynes proclaimed himself ready to go earlier in the week, but Tom Coughlin apparently has other ideas. We would confirm this again at gametime if you plan to use Carney.

There are few things worse in FF then worrying about a kicker. I dropped Carnes and picked up Bryant. I hate kickers. :lmao:

please sticky

EDIT: Sunday update on this site is saying Carney is in per the Newark Star-Ledger.

What's the latest on the Carney/Tynes situation? I lost track and need a byeweek ( maybe longer if my K is picked up) replacement for my kicker.

Is Carney the guy the rest of the way? Appreciate the help!

Is Tynes worth rostering at this point? NYG could be good for a kicker, but what is the play here.
I picked up Tynes a couple weeks ago, but dropped him and nabbed Carney. It's really unclear who will be kicking later this season, but it seems as if the Giants are content with Carney for the time being anyway. The most recent news I could find (from this Wednesday) is still ambiguous, put points to the roles staying as they are for now:

Lawrence Tynes said two weeks ago that he was healthy enough to kick, but the Giants have continued to stick with John Carney.

"We continuously talk to Lawrence, and I think he is very much aware of how we are trying to do this, and I think that he understands it," coach Tom Coughlin said. "I am sure he doesn't like it -- he is a competitor, why would he? But at the same token, he is a member of the team and does as good a job as he can to understand the circumstance."

I would say no, but I only carry 1 kicker on each of my team's rosters. If I were to carry 2 kickers, I still wouldn't want Tynes as he hasn't been starting. The only way I would roster Tynes is if it was announced he was starting, and I'm starting to think that isn't likely unless Carney gets injured or starts missing fg's. There have been complaints about Carney's short kickoffs, but imo if they've stayed with him this long, he's going to remain the starter unless one of the 2 beforementioned things occurs.FWIW, I picked up Carney in one league this week.
