Basic 5x5 roto is the way to go for a first timer. It's easier to find a league, relatively low maintenance during the season and most cheatsheets are built around this format.
I used to be in a bunch more. But I no longer have the time to do more than one auction league, so I dropped all of those but my original one. And I was in a second private Yahoo league but it folded.
The original one is still the most fun -- 5x5 but with a lot of odd rules and twists. It helps that I've known some of the other owners for as long as 15 years.
Here is my list of leagues for '08:- NFBC - 15 Team Mixed Leagues - Standard 5x5 - Straight Draft- 16 Team Mixed League - Standard 5x5 - Straight Draft- 12 Team Mixed League - Standard 5x5 - Straight Draft- 16 Team Mixed League - 4x4 SABR Categories - Auction Draft- 13 Team NL Only League - Standard 5x5 - Auction Draft- 12 Team AL Only League - Standard 5x5 - Auction DraftOnly Roto leagues for me. Can't stand that H2H stuff. Also, prefer auction, but straight drafts don't bother me.

I don't waste my time with football anymore, so this is my time of the year. Can't get enough baseball and roto baseball. Got MLB EI with DTV and MLB.tv through MLB.com, so whether home or away I can watch all the games. Can't wait for Weds. Let's get those pills popping the mitts.

this year my main keeper league is switching to espn.
we tried last year, but espn royally screwed everything up. we are trying again this year under the assumption that they've got everything together b/c we like the interface much better than yahoo.

I only play Roto, and I'm in 2 leagues......I've tried to play in 3, but it becomes very laborious.(AND THE ONLY WAY TO PLAY IS FOR MONEY)
If you're just starting out, try a free yahoo league. It may not be the best league, but it will give you an idea of what you are getting yourself into
