U of Minnesota Refuses to Have a Minute of Silence to Honor 9/11 Victi (1 Viewer)

WTF is wrong with them?

The student body killed a proposal to have a minute of silence to honor 9/11 victims because it might offend Muslim students. I can't make this up. I think the implication of their vote is immeasurably more offensive to Muslims, and that is that by voting against the minute of silence, they are saying that they think Muslims are responsible for 9/11.

Yea.. the Student body, read PC coddled cry baby's, voted that way...

But the people that actually run the University told them in so many words .. Shove your PC vote.. :hifive:

First of all, the 9/11 attacks were caused by Muslims. Second, we can probably safely assume these students were not concerned about offending murderous terrorists. So their vote was actually saying that they think all/most Muslims at least tacitly support murder and terrorism, which kinda makes them racist as all hell.

ok

it was NOT the student body, it was Student Government. HUGE difference

Student government attracts a certain type of student, and that type tends to like to be argumentative and uncooperative. They have little to no power (as evidenced by this vote doing nothing) and try to throw their weight around anyway. They vote to get noticed.

Nothing to see here, a small group of wackos trying to get attention and being passed off as the university as a whole.

I would have voted against the moment of silence also, but only because I hate symbolic stuff like this. The actual reason why the students voted against it was deeply racist.

I agree with this. Like most of us here, 9/11 is burned into my mind forever. I don't need a stupid moment of silence to remember it.

So we are mad that they decided in an atmosphere of heightened anti-Muslim sentiment to continue to not do something they hadn't ever done?

Sometimes I wonder if right wing talk show hosts get together with left wing students to come up with this stuff.

"OK I need you guys to do something REALLY CRAZY this time, so my listeners will get pissed off. "

We might as well not observe Veterans Day or Memorial Day either. What's the point? I remember all the sacrifices made on my behalf and don't need to be reminded of it every year. Also I don't want to offend anyone of Japanese or German heritage.

You're trying too hard here.
Unless I misread there has been no moment of silence in the past 15 years. And I don't think anyone can argue with a straight face that anti-Muslim feelings aren't running high in many places. So how am I trying too hard?

"Let's have a moment of silence on the 15th anniversary of 9/11 to remember the events of that day" isn't even remotely anti-Muslim.

Trying to deflect from the fact that this vote is a joke. I agree moments of silence are stupid but the mood du jour on campuses is soooooooooooo outta left field at this point it's embarrassing. You seem fairly quick to try to defend anything left of center. It seems you are trying too hard here.

Voting on a moment of silence seems like a silly exercise itself.
my first thought as well.

will we also have a moment of silence for Pearl Harbor? OKC Federal Bombing? Hurricane Katrina? Johnstown Flood? Titanic?
i actually wish we would have moments of silence for just about anything back to back to back because it would make a lot of real jholes shut the hell up and that would make me happy take that to the bank brohans

Truly shameful. I'm guessing the muslim students are as sick as anyone, I hope so. It is insulting them to say they would be offended.
The article doesn't say that any Muslim students were actually offended by having a moment of silence as some form of commemoration of 9/11.

From my reading of it and another article, https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2015/11/16/u-minnesota-student-government-votes-against-annual-911-ceremony-some-didnt-want-to-spread-islamaphobia/ it was fear of increasing racism and Islamaphobia and that might result in violence or retribution against Muslim students. People are making this weird leap that this was because of Muslim students not wishing to honor 9/11 victims or somehow supporting terrorism.

With every stupid story that comes out of colleges and their protests, they've lost every bit of credibility. FBGs should rejoice that these are the losers that will be competing for our jobs soon at a lower wage.

But the zeitgeist of anti-Muslim xenophobia!!!!!

you brohans are funny this is just the same junk different genreation people out of college have been complaining about what hte kids in college are complaining about for as long as i can remember if any of your brohans have ever said to yourself i will never turn in to my parents go look in a mirror becuase you have take that to the reality bank bromigos

Yeah, the cause and reasoning is debatable but I'm generally pretty pleased that a school administration tried to implement an event and the students said, "Eh, maybe let's not."

I like rebellion and defiance. Never let the people in charge get too comfortable.

:goodposting: Well spoken PC bro. This reminds me, the first time I ever heard the terms "brohan" and "broseph" were from a kid that was partying with us from the u of m. True story.

Again

Saying this is indicative of all the students at this university, let alone all universities, is ridiculous. the average student on campus likely has no clue what Student Government is doing, nor do they care. Student Government is like Fantasy Congress. It is a bunch of student living out fantasies of having influence when they have none. It is often driven as much by the personalities and politics of college relationships as it is by anything else

much ado about nothing

Why not let the Muslim community speak for itself instead of assuming how it feels? They don't need you or want you to be its protector.
