Muslims gather in Tustin to condemn violence in Libya

TUSTIN – Some wore the colors of their native Syria or Libya or the United States. Their message, however, was a united one.

About 60 Southern California Muslims and other supporters turned out at a Tustin mall on Friday night to remember those killed in Libya this week and to decry the violence perpetrated in the name of their religion.

Huda Herwees, 16, left, of Cerritos and Maysoon Ben-Ghaly of Irvine, attend a vigil at the corner of Barranca Parkyway and Jamboree Road near The District in response to the tragic killings of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and other personnel in Libya this week. Herwees holds a Libyan flag she brought back this summer after visiting relatives in Benghazi.

"We are here to make it clear to the world that this outrageous crime goes against basic principles of Islam," organizer Dima Khedraki of Orange told the group gathered outside the District at Tustin Legacy mall. "Islam is a religion of peace, love and acceptance of one another."

On Tuesday, Islamist militants stormed and burned the American Consulate in Libya, killing four diplomats, including the U.A. ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens.

Initial reports attributed the violence to a trailer posted online for a short, American-made video that mocks Islam's founding prophet.

The movie "was made by extremists and produced by extremists and reacted to by extremists, so we who are not extremists have to speak with our soft voices. And keep speaking with our quiet voices until we're louder than the extremists who are screaming," said Vicki Tamoush, a Tustin resident and founder of the Interfaith Witnesses, a group that stands in silent support of those who are harassed because of their faith.

The gathering was co-sponsored by the Council on American Islamic Relations – Greater Los Angeles and the Libyan American Association of Southern California.

Meanwhile, earlier Friday, President Barack Obama greeted four flag-draped coffins in a solemn ceremony at an Air Force base near Washington, D.C.

Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.
