U.S. Ambassador to Libya Killed in Rocket Attack (2 Viewers)

Muslims gather in Tustin to condemn violence in Libya

"We are here to make it clear to the world that this outrageous crime goes against basic principles of Islam," organizer Dima Khedraki of Orange told the group gathered outside the District at Tustin Legacy mall. "Islam is a religion of peace, love and acceptance of one another."
I'm glad they did this. American Muslims are, for the most part, wonderful people, and I'm disgusted by the crap that they sometimes have to endure, due to nothing but sheer bigotry. But sadly they are wrong about Islam being a religion of peace. It is a religion, around the world, of poverty, superstition, tribal hatreds, and ignorance, and those elements don't lend themselves to peace.

FWIW, the Muslim community here in Minneapolis issued a strong condemnation of the violence yesterday, including such statements as needing to just ignore nonsense like this film.

Again, that's good. Of course, these stories always get ignored by the extreme right, and then the next time something terrible happens, one of the first things we hear from the ignorant is, "Why don't Muslims in America ever condemn it?"

At this point my vote for Obama has almost nothing to do with his policies and will be for the lone fact that the right wing comes across as insane. I have no connection with the world view they promote. Maybe someday they will get their #### together and get rid of the small minded, racist knuckle draggers who run the show. Why any major party in the 21st century actively looks for votes from racists and hate mongers is truly amazing and frankly a bit depressing.
Thanks for the update. And why did you decide to put this random thought into the Libya thread?

It has everything to do with the Libya thread.

Carney: Protests not directed at the United States

'This is not a case of protests directed at the United States writ large or at U.S. policy, this is in response to a video that is offensive to Muslims'

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Friday the violent protests throughout the Middle East are not directed at the United States or U.S. policy but are a response to a YouTube video:

CARNEY: We also need to understand that this is a fairly volatile situation and it is in response not to United States policy, and not to, obviously, the administration, or the American people, but it is in response to a video, a film that we have judged to be be reprehensible and disgusting. That in no way justifies any violent reaction to it, but this is not a case of protests directed at the United States writ large or at U.S. policy, this is in response to a video that is offensive to Muslims.

Again, this is not in any way justifying violence, and we have spoken very clearly out against that and condemned it. And the president is making sure in his conversations with leaders around the region that they are committed as hosts to diplomatic facilities to protect both personnel and buildings and other facilities that are part of the U.S. representation in those countries.

The protests which began earlier this week have expanded rapidly across the Middle East on Friday.

Protesters attacked the U.S. Embassies in Tunis and Sudan; Tunisian protesters smashed windows and lit fires inside the embassy compound, while gunfire could be heard. Images of a dark column of smoke over the Tunisian site have circulated on the Internet Friday.

According to a page on the State Department’s website describing what an embassy is, an attack on an embassy is considered an attack on that country.

“Because an embassy represents a sovereign state, any attack on an embassy is considered an attack on the country it represents,” the page reads.
Talk about your bad movie reviews.

Feds are questioning the movie maker, looks like he's a dead beat trouble maker type with an anti-Islam past. Looks like Japan has issues as well with anti-them protests. I say we stop sending these countries cars, that'll learn'em!

Krauthammer sums up this deacle very well...http://dailycaller.com/2012/09/15/krauthammer-says-the-tide-of-american-power-is-receding-blames-obama-for-becoming-irrelevant/
I agree with a lot of what he's saying but the influence has decreased markedly since the day we invaded Iraq. The heavy handed Bush Administration gave way to the pat on the butt Obama Administration when we need something squarely in the middle.
“But the problem is this, pro-American elements in the region, look around — there is no America anymore,” Krauthammer said. “I will give you one example. Does anybody care about what we think about Syria — the major country in Mesopotamia? Does anybody act what Obama’s view? No. They want to know what the Russians are doing, the Iranians and Hezbollah. These are the active players. And that’s what happens when America withdraws its power and its influence. We’ve become irrelevant.”
But the average American doesn't want to spend capital or influence in Syria and folks from both sides talk out of both sides of their :hophead: when discussing foreign policy. They rail against the Administration in power for spending too much overseas or peddling influence and then through a fit when they assume the U.S. isn't doing enough to project their power when stuff like this happens. It is a slippery slope more so than many other strategic policies because it is difficult to sell the public on why it's important for us to retain a presence in country X. Foreign relations is unappreciated and mostly misunderstood.

Homer, is that even Fox News?
Appears to be, yes. Those patriots.
The reason I asked was there was a pop-up window that I couldn't close with my phone. I didn't think the video was slanted, did you?
I didn't bother to watch the video after reading the headline and the comment below it.
It was only 15 seconds or so.
The Libyan President apologized for the murder and Obama thanked him for the apology.I guess we are supposed to be outraged, or maybe it's sickened now.
My point was the actual news cast didn't seem so inflammatory, I am surprised at the wording of banner since the newscast didn't imply that really at all.

Would the protests be happening if the guy hadn't released the video? No. Again, somebody please find this ###hole and hand him over. Not because of what he said, but because he knew what he said was going to endanger lives, with absolutely no upside whatsoever, and he did it anyway. He might as well have random strangers in these countries held at gunpoint making them play Russian Roulette. The reckless selfishness is beyond comprehension. Much worse than a drunk driver. That said, this is great:

Bush was so much more of a man than obama will ever be... And yeah going into Iraq was a disaster and not worth one American life, but what to #### does that have to do with the blood on obama's hands, why are we there still, why did he aid in installing the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt? Why did he also cause the deaths of our people in Libya. obama's foreign policy has been a total ####up and mistake from the start. Not only does everyone STILL hate us, now they also think us weak, Putin basically told him to pound sand because he knows what a weak person he is, he has no spine and is no leader. The world is a much more dangerous place with obama and the Middle East laughs at us. Why does Israel hate obama???We need a real man in the White House not a community organizer and campaigner, that is ALL he is... obama is a disgrace and if re-elected by the "takers" of America will lead to the demise of America as a world power...If you have children or grandchildren, you are a fool, if you don't you are a blind fool because we as a nation are going over a cliff and you could not care less...
Sweet jesus this is hilarious. :lmao:

It's bad, but we have gotten more civilized as a country. Case in point: after Pearl Harbor, the response in my home state of California was to imprison all of the Japanese Americans and send them to internment camps. After 9/11, we didn't do anything like that to the Muslim- Americans. That's an improvement, 60 years later. Even so, some prominent people called for it. Michelle Malkin actually wrote a book called In Defense of Internment, in which she attempted to justify what happened to the Nisei and called for the imprisonment of all Arab-Americans. It is to the great shame of those who call themselves conservatives that Ms. Malkin was never ostracized for writing this piece of crap, and that she continues to appear on Fox News as a regular contributor.

Malkin had a viewpoint that you were vehemently opposed to; so what? She wrote a book giving her opinion on the situation and ultimately her view turned out incorrect; does that knock her down in the credibility department, most likely (I did not read this book so I do not know her exact reasoning). As for Fox News, she is a contributor - she brings her viewpoint to be countered by others (usually). Most contributors, on other stations too, say outrageous things over the many hours that they are asked to speak. I think your indignation here is a little exaggerated.

Do you know when you've beaten a subject to death and have nothing of any quality to do in your precious spare time as an individual and family member? When you start arguing Michelle Malkin.

Most disgraceful "president" ever...

What a laughing stock he and we are...

Where is Tim in here rejoicing about the "Arab Spring", for what you have posted over the last few days you should be ashamed of yourself...

Weep for your family, following generations of Americans and freedom...

 According to the White House, Obama is doing a brilliant job with foreign policy. Obama might have sabotaged budget negotiations to kick the can down the road until after the election, but when it comes to terrorists, he is much more willing to compromise. I expect another nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

How did Obama compromise with or about terrorists?

He asked to send in some Marines to protect the embassies in Tunisia and Sudan. The governments there said no way because the terrorists didn't like it. Obama then decided that he'd just pull all the diplomats out. That is leadership if you haven't seen it before.

Cut down on drone attacks to five days a week and a few 3-day weekends per year.

Keeping people out of harms way where it's not essential for them to be there is compromising with terrorists?

You make it sound like common sense. It is an extremely tough decision that only a Nobel Peace Prize laureate is capable of making.

I was hopeful that the Arab Spring would ulitmate produce positive results for the millions of poverty-stricken and tragic people who live in those countries. Hopeful, not confident by any means. I'm still hopeful because the jury, to a large extent, is still out. Why should I be ashamed?

You would rather us invade Sudan and Tunisia then withdraw our non essential personnel?

I did not say I want to put the diplomats in harm's way but Obama has to make sure it does not look like we're running away with tails between our legs.

We have a Marine Corps Embassy Security Group who protects our embassies oversea. Sudan basically told our Command In Chief that he could not send the marines in to do their job. Anyone with half a brain can see that something is very wrong with this picture when Sudan can have this kind of veto power over our President.

Imagine that. A leader of a country making decisions regarding what goes on militarily within with the borders of their country.

Actually, the Republican response would be to invade Chad.

I thought sovereign nations were allowed to refuse entry to anyone they want.

One question/point:

-- The video was originally released in July, but they embasssy was concerned enough about it on 9/11 to issue that apologetic-sounding statement. If this was done at the directionof the WH it looks bad. If the WH had nothing to do with it, then what were they doing to ensure the safety of our people? Triuble is brewing and the only action is for the embassy to take it upon themeselves to issue a statement?

You send them home and tell Americans to not travel there to avoid a Jimmy Carter hostage situation before the election.

I'm pretty sure the Embassy in Cairo got it's first sniff of trouble brewing that day, likewise the government. Clearly the video wasn't known in the Islamic world until about the same time or they would have rioted immediately. It had presumably languished in happy obscurity between July and the day of the first riot.
