U2 - Community rankings - FIN - #4 Sunday Bloody Sunday, #3 - One, #2 - Bad, #1 - Where the Streets Have No Name -Spotify links, thanks to Krista4 (5 Viewers)

(103) - > #115 - When I Look at the World

Vulture.com ranking and comment -159/218 - Bono sort of vaguely says, “Yeah, maybe it’s about my wife,” but there’s no overarching theme or melody here to make this one memorable.

Comment - Not a fan. Just a bit messy. There is a definite outlier ranking here with a 13. Really curious what this song does for them as the other 3 and vulture all view it differently.

Total Points - 174.25

Rankers - 9

Average Points per rank - 19.36 (Approximately a 61st rank).

Ranks 120th on average points per ranker

Highest Rank - 13

Lowest Rank - 186

Previous Rank - 103 > 115

Ranking Comments - The 13 and 24 ranking really lift this and keep it high. After that we only have a 50 and 88 in the top 100.

Love this song.  I probably gave it a higher rating than it truly deserves.  I  just think this is a really good composition (again, I don't focus on lyrics pretty much at all).  I'm a fan of this album in general and I think this is the standout track.

I’m the highest on this one. It’s not a very melodic song, but it has a frenetic energy that gives it urgency and authenticity that connected with me in a big way during my angsty Christian rock teen years.

#87 for me, and I'm slightly disappointed it still is mired on the low end.  It's messy, but like you I enjoy the frenetic energy.

None of the rest of today's songs made my first cut.

I’ve always thought of it similarly to Tomorrow, so I probably would have ranked it similarly had I kept going past 80.

I'm at 50 on When I Look at the World. It's got a good tempo to it, the intro is compelling. I do feel like it falls apart a bit at the end, but I enjoy it.

(105) - > #114 - If God Will Send His Angels

Vulture.com ranking and comment -145/218 - Wait, was this supposed to be a dance record? “If we could sing and play like Prince, that would have been Top 10,” Bono said. Except that the lyrics are overwrought, even for Bono. The Edge blames the chorus: “It is a nice tune, but the chorus doesn’t connect.”

Comment - Must be in the running for one of U2s worst singles. I really do not like this track, which to no surprise is why I rank it at 195. It’s fun when you hear an LP for the first time as to what the band and record company go with in the way of singles. I was incredulous when this got chosen. Staring at the Sun was an obvious choice despite sounding disjointed. What surprised me was an obvious single that didn’t make the six that were chosen.

(132) - > #113 - I Threw a Brick Through a Window

Vulture.com ranking and comment - 58/218 - The difference between the album version and the live version of this track is dramatic. On record, it’s interesting rhythmically, but feels lugubrious and stiff. This isn’t surprising when you learn that Larry Mullen could not get through the tempo and came back one day to find that the Edge had overdubbed the drums. But live, this track is electric and cathartic, U2 building a sonic space that others would later try to duplicate but never succeed in doing. And, more importantly, the freedom of the expanded space makes it easier to instinctively understand what story Bono was trying to tell — because that’s exactly what the song is about, an action that creates space where there was none before. It’s the story of punk rock. “I THREW A BRICK! I THREW A BRICK!” Bono would cry out back in the day, and the hair would stand up on the back of your neck.

Comment - Standard early album filler. For some reason I am the top ranking. This is the last track which dies not attract a top 100 ranking from at least one of us.

Ranking Comments - A 22 ranking and then 7 rankings between 51 and a 100 is a good point to start the serious end of this countdown. Every song from now until 74 has between 9 and 14 rankers.

Right now we get serious

Every song between 112 and 75 has between 9 and 14 rankers

Every song from 53 to 74 has between 10 and 18 rankers

Every song from 34 to 52 has between 16 and 25 rankers

Every song from 15 to 33 has between 22 and 32 rankers

Every song from 1 to 14 has between 31 and 40 rankers

Only New Years Day has 40 rankers. Where will it land?

Huge fan.  I was the high rank here.  Probably too high in retrospect but don’t care!

Ok, I lied.  Just listened again while waiting to board a flight.  Still love it.  Glad it’s #34 for me.   Fits that late 70s / early 80s angst-y disaffected youth style.

I'm the high ranker on Into the Heart. Obviously it's a pretty notable tune from their early days. Looking at the track listing for Boy, wow what a great album IMO.

I'm surprised and displeased with myself for not ranking "I Threw a Brick". Not sure how I missed it.

It made my ranking (68) and I really like the intro guitar riff, but it is too disjointed for me to rank much higher.

Wow.  That’s just weird.  It almost dropped off Mrs APK’s list.
This is very surprising. Is it that she never liked the song, or just that it was so overplayed that she’s come to dislike it? For a fan of old U2, I can understand the latter but would be shuked by the former. Put another way, if a U2 fan in the mid-80s put War on the turntable and upon hearing New Year’s Day said “this song blows” or even “meh” that would absolutely blow my mind.

Well, her list only included 30 songs (🙄) out of sheer laziness paired with stubbornness.  So she had it at 26.  Still high.  She likes the song a lot — she just loves U2 so much overall that it’s a tough list to crack.  And she’s more of a UF/JT fan.

I'm not sure what to make of the lack of songs from Rattle And Hum so far. I have been preparing to be morally outraged by the results for RAH songs. Can't be outraged when there haven't been any songs yet. I guess I will have to take that as a good sign.

I only ranked 50 songs, but I have 6 RAH songs on my list.

As I mentioned when we did this the first time, I took all the remaining live songs from the RAH DVD, the songs on the official album, the B sides, the covers, and some other live recordings between TJT and AB and threw them all in a folder together. I play those songs the most out of all things I have U2 (which is a pretty expansive amount of material).

Boy is amazing.  It’s probably my 2nd favorite U2 album.
After the dust fell on my song rankings, I calculated each album's average rating and then looked back to see how the albums ranked based on their songs.  Boy was my #3 but just a hair behind number 2 Joshua Tree.

As time has gone on, I've liked Boy more and more, but October less and less.  Not sure why.

Into The Heart is my #75.  Probably should have it a little better than that in hindsight.

It’s funny, War used to be my favorite album and now it isn’t even top-3 for me

Damn. Were we supposed to rank songs off Rattle and Hum? I thought it was a novelty record.

J/K - 4 songs are between 76 and 112. 3 between 51 and 75 and 5 in the top 50.

The live versions of BTBS, ISHFWILF and Pride do not count, unless someone mentions them in their ranking of the studio version.

Freedom for my People and Star Spangled Banner were not considered.

It’s not weird that folks live it.  It’s odd (to me) that out of all the famous U2 songs, NYD is the only one that 40 people ranked.
We do have one ranker who has already spoken about the exclusion of Bad, One, Pride and WTSHNN to name a few.

Only 2 songs have 39 rankings, not including New Years Day

Only 3 songs have 38....not including the other 3

3 songs have 35 or 37 rankers

These will be our top 9 songs.

15 songs have between 30 and 34 rankings.

Only 1 song in the top 25 has less than 30 rankings

Funny how rankings work. When I did LZ, every song but one had at least 10+ people that didn't rank it. Only one had 7 non-rankers. Granted, that was different because people could only rank 25 songs. Since I think you required people to rank at least that many, what would the results look like if you only took the Top 25 U2 songs from all the rankers? Maybe you could post that at the end. That one should be pretty easy to figure out with a 25-points to 1-point scoring system.

And down goes my #63!.  That's my highest-ranking loss so far.  I've now lost four of my #63-68, yet my #69-80 and some dribs and drabs below that are intact.  I am right, and you are wrong!

As to this song, great dramatic opening, passionate vocal, nice drum fills (even though they don't sound like part of the song), cool sound throughout but especially on the instrumental transitions between verses and on the extended middle section.   My only criticism is that maybe it's a tad longer than it needs to be.

Maybe. Depends how sick of this I am. I know myself if I was limited to 25 I would include some songs i ranked at eg 28, 32 and boot out some at eg 23, 24.

I woukdnt ask for new lists, but just working on the top 25 as is.

Out of the 40 lists submitted, 7 had 25 exactly. 7 had between 26 and 33. 10 people ranked between 34 and 51 songs.

With 60% of rankers only doing 51 or less, it is highly probably that most have not ranked a song to date. I doubt any of these have more than 5 pulled from their lists.

A whole bunch of meh. I can't envision why anyone would think this is a top 25 U2 song.

I'm the 22. I love it live AND studio. "He was my BROTHER, there is no OTHER way out of here" always makes my hair stand on end, and IMO the main guitar riff is one of Edge's most powerful. I still think you're way off on calling it filler, it's pretty clearly the second-best song on October.

This didn't make my top 80 but probably would have shown up soon after. If we were allowed to rank An Cat Dubh -> Into the Heart as one, I probably would have had that VERY high. By itself, Into the Heart feels like a postscript, but considered together with An Cat Dubh, it's an exciting musical journey.

Not only is it one of the best U2 songs, it doesn't really have anything that people don't like about U2 (overemoting Bono, overstuffed lyrics, repetitive guitar parts, etc.)
I agree. I listened to it today after Alex's post, and although it is in my top 10, I thought to myself I should have had it higher. It is just one of their songs I have always loved. I hadn't listened to their music in a long time except for in our drafts when I would draft a song, and then I'd listen to it over and over, cause it had been so long since I had heard it. It was fun revisiting their music for the rankings.

:goodposting:   Love it, too.  And I've been playing a lot of U2 as background while I cook or something.

As an aside, happy to see so much more discussion in here now.  I guess we needed to get to the "meat" of the rankings for it, though I really enjoyed listening to all the non-meat (veggie?) songs, too.
