Uber car service (1 Viewer)

Has anyone here used it? More specifically how is it in the DC metro area? I just heard about it yesterday and the app has mostly really good reviews. How reliable is it? I'm thinking about using it to go from my hotel to a surgery center nearby and back, so I need reliability. Unfortunately they won't let me drive back after the surgery and want me to use some service called Visiting Angels which costs over $80! That's like highway robbery.

They are a bunch of scammers.

I use it from time to time in Chicago, but the company has a bad reputation.

I love it. Use it all the time. Never had a single issue. I'm convinced the bad publicity is being put on by the cab companies ####ting their pants.

The good thing is you can see how many cars are nearby and it gives you the ETA.

I've tried to get cabs before but they have not been available, forcing or suggesting a black car.

Last time I went out it cost me 160 dollars to get back to my place which was just a few miles away. That said, it was the middle of a snowstorm and Dr Detroit had me drunk enough to the point where I didn't care or feel like fussing with calling a yellow cab.

Did you invite him back to your place? :oldunsure:

I have used this a few times in Baltimore, I didn't think it was very expensive here. Dunno.

For the love of all that is holy, somebody please tell me who that blonde is in the ads on my facebook page. Looks a bit like Hasselbeck.

What is the advantage of uber over cabs?

And two miles? That has walk or bike written all over it.

Uber>>>>>cabs. At least in L.A. I've had cab drivers refuse credit cards at 3AM and threatening to throw me out, or they'll drive me to an ATM. #### those guys. No cash is exchanged. All done via credit over the uber app. You call a car when you're ready and you know exactly when they'll arrive.

Sure. 7 degrees in a blizzard. Bike it home!

The service is great. They are pretty honest about pricing and it's ALL about supply and demand. During a time or event where cabs are in huge demand they will hugely increase their prices.

My only issue with them is questionable practices of ####### with their competitors ( ie making fake pick up reservations and other ####, really low brow #### that has me wary to give them biz)

Yeah that weather was brutal. Plus we had sat outside in the rain/snow all day at the Army/Navy game, so everyone was like a wet dog.

I'm pretty sure the surgery center won't let me walk. (Or just drive my car). I'd gladly do either if it was up to me.

Cabs use Uber.

The drivers may be former cab drivers. However, they can't ransom you for cash anymore. You can only pay via credit/debit card. Plus- you are able to rate your driver making them accountable. Good luck complaining about a city cab driver.

I've never had trouble with cabs anywhere I've lived. But I guess if you can get more value out of an Uber car I'd be willing to give it a shot, but I'm not crazy about the inconsistent pricing.

I've used it in multiple cities and have never had a problem. If I were you, I'd have no hesitation using them for what you need.

60 blocks in manhattan during rush hour last week cost me $45 in an SUV. A black car would have been less.

A 45 min ride in Baltimore cost me about $100 a couple months ago.

Used them 1 time in Dallas, and it was great. App said the car would be there in 6 minutes and it was. They have your credit card on file, so they give you a receipt and off you go. Just need to state whether you want a cab or town car though. Reasonably priced. Great service.

It is about 30% more than a standard cab but well worth it. This is for their black car service, I'm not a huge fan of X or cab service. My work doesn't have a problem with me expensing it so use it quite a bit when traveling. In big cities like NY, it is far superior to dealing with the cabbies and who wouldn't rather be in a Lexus than a yellow cab?

Here in Chicago, cab drivers can do both. They can work for their cab company and also pick up rides from Uber.

Nothing but great for me. I'm in DC.

I prob use it 5-6x a month. The service itself is great, select your location, then chose the kind of car (black, über x, regular), & request car. Reliability isn't a question - I've used Uber at least 100x and have never had a problem. If you're looking to save money, they might not be the best route as they are on the higher side of price.

And something in Seattle, too, on Geekwire?
HFS! They glued some posters on things. Appalling.

The city council was voting to limit the amount of drivers for Uber, which passed. Taking taxis in Seattle pretty much sucks. Uber is a much better service. Don't know the ins and outs of the taxi business but pretty much seemed like BS to me.

Seattle was just more noise, but Uber flat admitted to making false reservations then cancelling them, which is really low, don't you agree?

Agreed.

In comparison to the average taxi experience vs Uber I'll take a few sketchy actions though. Taxi companies getting bent out of shape about Uber is laughable IMO.

Uber's level of service is exceptional in my experience.

Yeah, in DC, at least, Uber is just a much better experience than taking a cab. For one thing, UberX is generally cheaper (and UberX is fine for me in most situations).

Unlike calling a dispatcher or using a competing Taxi app (like Taxi Magic), the Uber app is virtually flawless. I can see where the car is coming to get me and if, for some reason, the driver is getting lost, I can immediately call him and tell him how to get to me.

Surge pricing is clearly explained when I order the car, and is rarely a mystery to me.

This #### is useless. Any time I click "set pickup location" on my S3 the app just crashes.
I found the problem.

I really like Uber. Far better than the taxis here in Denver and the pricing is fair.
 Used it in seattle. Remarkably efficient.

• Open app...select UberX, Uber, or Black Car (increasing fancyness).

• See vehicles swarming around you on phone map. request ride.

• SEe pic driver coming to get you, model/license plate of car, with accurate ETA, and map showing where driver is

• Get in... ride.... get out. No tip or fussing necessary. Bills you automatically.

I feel like I know less about this than when I started reading the thread.
