"Uber" QB Scoring > Drafting Strategies? (1 Viewer)

Anyone ever participated a league with tiered bonus scoring like this?

10 team $250 buyin...

15YDS per point Passing

6pts Passing TD

5pt Bonus at 300yds passing.

5pt additional bonus at 400yds passing.

5pt additional bonus at 500yds passing.

Seems to me like the stud three QB's are gold in this format, no?

There are also tiered bonuses for Receiving/Rushing with 5pt bonuses at 125/200/300 yards, but I see limited 200 yard hits and no 300 yard hits, whereas the 300/400 yard games are relatively common with the top QBs and there will even be a few scattered 500 yard games hit.

Using standard FBG Projections dropoffs look like:

QB1: 601pts

QB5: 489pts

QB10: 486pts

RB1: 363pts

RB5: 272pts

RB10: 244pts

WR1: 341pts

WR5: 282pts

WR10: 253pts

Anyone drafted in this sort of league (assuming mix of half solid players and half weaker players)? Curious as to what sort of strategies you've come across given not only the shallowness (10 teams) but also the tiered bonus scoring.

Not giving specific draft slots or starting requirements (pretty standard) because this isn't a "draft my team for me" thread but more of a thread to address bonus scoring and how it affects the optimal strategy.

Assuming you start more than 1 RB and 1 WR, I'd be interested in seeing the drops beyond the top 10 at those positions as well. With the drop from the #1-10 QB projected at only 115 points, while the drop from the #1-10 RB is projected at a similar 119 points and WR only at 88 points, seems fairly clear that a standard strategy dictates targeting the best RB in the first, as we are clearly looking at the fastest dropoff in that position, especially if we can expect 12-14 RBs to be drafted in the first two rounds, while not expecting QB10 to be off the board until sometime around the 6th or 7th round.

Assuming players get drafted in order of their projected performance and perform relatively close to said projections (a lot of leaps, but this is a theoretical discussion), it would be a fatal mistake to take a QB early (and, depending on the projections for WR1-5, likely any WR other than WR1), as you will never be able to make up the value lost at RB in the latter rounds. Figure that the drop from RB 1-10 is reached in less than 18 picks, meanwhile, the same value drop at QB takes upwards of 7 rounds to be seen, skipping QB gives you 5-6 rounds to gain value at the other positions while anyone taking a QB early is playing a game of catchup that they can't possibly win.

Factor in the likely need to start more than 1 RB and 1 WR, and the advantage for waiting on a QB grows even greater.

nippity nip....

Yes...assume fairly standard starting RB/WR requirements since that's what most folks will have (ie maximizing the benefit of the discussion).

I play in a league that uses the tiered bonus system (not as extreme though. 3 for 300, 4 for 400, and 5 for 500).

As you pointed out, at least last year, the top 3 QBs simply slaughtered. Here is how the scoring broke down in my league.

Drew Brees: 526.64

Aaron Rodgers: 512.42

Tom Brady: 481.30

Matt Stafford: 453.32

Cam Newton: 423.84 (Rushing yards helped and we do reward bonus points for rushing and receiving as well tier wise but they are 100/125/150)

Eli Manning: 365.82

Tony Romo: 352.96

Matt Ryan: 350.48

Philip Rivers: 327.56

Mark Sanchez: 300.26

Ryan Fitzpatrick: 280.78

Michael Vick: 280.02 [QB12]

Even though my league starts 20 QBs (including Flex options), just the disparity from QB 4/5 to QB 12 was insane. Brees outscored Eli Manning 32.92 vs 22.86 FPPG! And Eli finished at QB6!!

I think if you have the opportunity, you absolutely have to take the chance of grabbing a Top 3 QB. The differences against opponents can often be enough to win weeks alone even if you suffer at another position for that week.

Rough Example: Drew Brees throws for 338 yards with 4 TD and 1 INT. That alone scores 40.52 in a 6TD/-2 INT league and still scores 33.52 in a 4TD/-1 INT scoring system. Scoring was with 1/25 passing though.

We do tiered bonuses but only at 300 and 500. 5pts at each mark. WR/RBs get 5pts at 100 and 200.
