Underrated 80's/90's songs... (2 Viewers)

- Superchunk kinda nsfw since they don't pronounce the asterisksI really don't know if the Del song is underrated or not, I'm not a big hip-hop guy. Most of the stuff I like is in this vein though, kinda smooth, sometimes jazzy, very musical.

City Sleeps was awesomely used in the first MTV Movie Awards as the song for the Backdraft clips.

The other two are indie style rock that I really like - busy and sonic without necessarily being "hard", unconventional voices

I was just reminded of how much I really do like These Are Days by 10k Maniacs.
I love to listen to the 10,000 Maniacs album "In My Tribe" often
:goodposting: One of my favorite 80's albums ... winner from start to finish. Best work Natalie  ever did, and their finest hour, for sure  "Don't Talk", "Hey Jack Kerouac" and "The Painted Desert" all belong up in this discussion.
The man in 119 takes his tea all alone

This and this didn't suck when I went back to listen to them again. Some of the other stuff I remembered as good? Oy vey.

This is a cover, but an original one, and I've always liked it.

This is still close to my favourite Motorhead song

Some other personal favorites, because I'm bored; mostly R&B.

Treat her like a lady - The Temptations (1984)

Stay With Me Tonight - Jeffrey Osborne (1983)

Night People - Kool & The Gang (1980)

Give Me Tonight - Shannon (1984)

The Finest - S.O.S. Band (1986)

I'm In Love - Evelyn Champagne King (1981)

Stomp! - The Brothers Johnson (1980)

Forget Me Nots - Patrice Rushen (1982)

Curious - Midnight Star (1984)

Save Me - Lisa Fisher (1991)

Who's Zoomin' Who? - Aretha Franklin (1985)

Strike It Up - Black Box (1990)

Back Together Again - Flack/Hathaway (1980)

Mama Used To Say - Junior (1982)

Love Light In Flight - Stevie Wonder (1984)

Must Be The Music - Secret Weapon (1981)

I Like - Guy (1988)

Back And Forth - Cameo (1986)

Squeeze remains way under appreciated. Most think of Tempted as a hit, it really wasn't. Here are a couple that should be recognized.

Tempted

Is That Love

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAY9Vyo0g0A

Another less loved band - The Stranglers. They had some great edgy stuff and they also had some good pop

Strange Little Girl

Sting - If I Ever Lose My Faith In You (goosebumps kind of song)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7km4EHgkQiw

Todd Rundgren - how this stuff flies under the radar for most for over 40 years is a crime. Here is a couple off of the Nearly Human album made in '89.

Had a friend growing up whose father was a big classical music guy. He had a wall of CDs (which was a big deal in the late 80s/early 90s) and when we would go over to play Diplomacy or Axis & Allies he would play music with composers from the various countries whose turn it was and things like that.

The first time we showed him Squeeze's Album cover for Cozi Fan Tutti Frutti, he almost died laughing. Always thought it was one of the more clever album names/covers.

I always like "Pulling Mussels from the Shell"

My apologies if this was already mentioned but I'll go with "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits. Title track to their most successful album and yet the song itself is hardly ever played. It also was the closing song on one of the best ever episodes of "Miami Vice."

I come from more of the R&B Dance Style school as RN - here's a few more recent discoveries (BTW, I run one of the most followed Spotify Playlists for R&B Old School Slow Jams if that's your cup of tea)

Alexander O'Neal - The Morning After: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01FNEDKEoYk

Debarge - I Like It: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqaKisKIyUo

After 7 - Sara Smile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLWMFZS6xms

Zhane - Sending My Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx3AD9VmN9k

Mary G Blige - My Life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN3yMjnyXyU

(I could go on forever, but there are 672 songs on my Spotify playlist of this ilk)

JB, if you have Sirius/XM, check out The Groove on channel 50. They just keep comin with strong old-school R&B 24/7. It's hard to change the channel.

Also in the Two Cathedrals episode of West Wing. Haec credam a deo pio? A deo iusto, a deo scito? Cruciatus in crucem. Tuus in terra servus, nuntius fui. Officium perfeci. Cruciatus in crucem. Eas in crucem. You'll get Hoynes.

Damn. Some great, little known stuff on that list. Sticking with a few the artists you mentioned, I'll add.....

Dire Straits- Skateaway

Romantics- When I Look In Your Eyes

Santana- Winning & Hold On

Tommy Shaw- What If (Remo's Theme)

Night Ranger- Goodbye

Not sure where all these topped out on charts and I am sure some are pretty well known... but meh

Golden Brown - The Stranglers
Everybody Knows - Leonard Cohen - the cover by Concrete Blonde is great as well
Head On The Jesus & Mary Chain - the cover by the Pixies is good too
Knowledge - Operation Ivy
Through My Fingers - Pegboy
American Life - Primus
Caught By The Fuzz - Supergrass
Some Might Say - Oasis
Fade Into You - Mazzy Star
Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now) - Cracker
Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths
Take the Skinheads Bowling - Camper Van Beethoven
Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think) - The Specials (a cover of a cover of a cover etc. etc.)
Where Is My Mind? - Pixies
Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers (another cover... but I don't think Stevie's falls in the 80s-90s timeframe)
High Plains Drifter - Beastie Boys
Cities in Dust - Siouxsie and the Banshees
Stuart - The Dead Milkmen
Hey Suburbia - Screeching Weasel
Tomorrow - Morrissey
American Music - Violent Femmes
Wings Of A Dove Madness (I find their live songs much better than their recorded songs)
Angry Johnny Poe
U-Mass Pixies
