Undrafted free agents (1 Viewer)

WR Eric Thomas to the Colts. Interesting player.

The Colts are collecting some height/weight/speed animals with Rogers, Moncrief, and Thomas.

Anyone have any observations about these two guys signed by the Saints?

From RW -

Saints signed Rutgers WR Brandon Coleman.
Coleman (6-foot-6, 225) tied Rutgers' school record for career touchdown receptions (20) before declaring for the draft as a redshirt junior. He averaged 19.2 yards per catch on 94 grabs. Despite vertical-receiver college stats and a massive catch radius (34-inch arms), Coleman is a buildup-speed player whose game will have to change. He needs to learn how to use his body to shield defenders, because he won't be running by NFL defensive backs. Alshon Jeffery successfully made similar changes in Chicago. Ultimately, Coleman is a project whose outlook could range anywhere from Plaxico Burress to Ramses Barden.

Saints signed Sam Houston State RB Tim Flanders.
Flanders (5-foot-8 5/8, 207) left Sam Houston State as the Southland Conference's all-time leader in rushing yards (5,664) and touchdowns (66). Although he ran 4.75 in Indy and was underutilized in the passing game in college, Flanders improved to 4.56 at the Bearkats' Pro Day and reminds of Rams feature back Zac Stacy on tape with a bowling-ballish build and ability to beat first contact. A gifted enough runner to make an NFL roster, Flanders is worth monitoring in fantasy circles despite his low profile, though he will find playing time hard to come by early in his career. The New Orleans' backfield is as muddy as any in the league.
They sound good to me.

Any Rutgers fans who know about Coleman?

About Flanders, I'm not so sure about that comment about playing time, he's basically looking at Cadet as competition plus whoever else is signed (or traded for). The Saints like to carry 4 HB's typically and they have a lot of plays and targets to fill with Sproles out. Being short does not equal Sproles, but I'm convinced the Saints are not abandoning that Bush/Sproles role which has been so integral to what they do since 2006.

Gil Brandt ‏@Gil_Brandt#Montana LB Brock Coyle had 10 teams call him today. Down to #Seahawks and #Vikings, he chose Seattle. Will be there tomorrow.
Questionable decision. The competition would not be as tough in Minnesota.

Flanders would be a strong RB prospect if he were a better fast-twitch explosiveness athlete. Guy has great moves, hips, and feet. Just doesn't back it up with a real burst. He's like a thrift store version of a LeSean McCoy type of back and should at least be a tough cut.

Plays at a low level of competition, but tore up Texas A&M last season:

Coleman is a huge receiver and has deceptive deep speed but little burst off the line. Take your eyes off him after 10 yards or so and he can get behind a defense. Unfortunately, once the QB airs it out to him, he often drops it. Great measurables, but needs a ton of work in basically every area.

Sam Houston graduate here. I watched Timmy Flanders plenty of times in person. I love the player! I always felt he could play in the NFL. He was the best player on offense and head coach Willie Fritz fed him the ball plenty of times. Good runner, can catch the ball well. I would say a very poor man's Shady McCoy is a decent comparison. I'm rooting for the guy and I think he landed with a great coach who's gonna find a way to use him. Maybe not super fantasy relevant anytime soon, but he's definitely gonna make the practice squad. Maybe I'm wrong and being a total Homer, but the kid has skills! Rooting for him big time.

Flanders was ahead of everyone except Archer in my Hard to Tackle ratings (tracking yards after contact & broken tackles). Interesting that Khiry Robinson is a similar size and had similarly bad workout numbers (and Pierre Thomas before him).

Other guys I had my eye on:

RB Henry Josey to Philadelphia

RB David Fluellen to Philadelphia

WR Albert Wilson to Kansas City

WR Chandler Jones to Cleveland

TE AC Leonard to Minnesota

TE Joe Don Duncan to New England (?)

RB Stephen Houston unsigned

TE Colt Lyerla unsigned

How is possible that Lyerla is still unsigned? I get that he has off field problems, but he's talented

I noticed the same thing. They'll probably try to beef him up to ~220 or so like they did with Thomas and Robinson.

I just thought this was a good listing by Couch, should be included here:

Players don't make the practice squad. They get cut and no one picks them up and then they are brought back for the practice squad.

It should be how most incorrectly envision it, but it isn't.

Mentioned in another thread, I liked what I read about James Wilder's son. Seeing the Bengals signed him deflated my excitement.

Now my curiousity is stuck waiting for them to cut him and hoping it's early enough for him to sign and play with another team. Since there were other teams interested, I think this is a poor choice and he should fire his agent already.

Why wasn't Jackson Jeffcoat drafted with some coach saying "we'll get him with the trainer and get some meat on those bones"?

Ted Hendricks award and Big 12 DPOY is not too shabby a resume even if he does only weigh 250lbs

Deep dynasty owners, keep an eye on Cody Hoffman. He signed a pretty ridiculous UDFA contract with Washington. Only a $7,500 signing bonus so it's not like they're stuck with him, but it's a 3 year/ $1.5M deal. They must really like him.

he Colts hope they've found the next Antonio Gates or Jimmy Graham.

The Colts on Sunday signed Erik Swoope, a former four-year basketball player at the University of Miami, to play tight end.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Swoope has never played organized football at any level, but he did start 27 of 110 basketball games while with the Hurricanes.

Speaking of firing your agent. Jeff Mathews to ATL? He has no chance barring injury of ever seeing the field. I was hoping he would go somewhere that he could compete. Heck, Houston would have been a far better spot.

He quit football and dropped out of school to do coke. No one is going to sign a guy that lacks passion for the sport.

ETA: He choose jail time over the judge's offer of rehab. He's not real bright.

The conspiracy tweets about Sandy Hook didn't help.

Haha, nice. I believe I saw some fantasy experts discuss on Twitter yesterday that he was no longer anything more than an early 3rd round rookie pick or something. Don't stop believing, I guess...

I was reading this blog post this morning from SBNation:

http://www.alligatorarmy.com/2014/5/11/5707056/loucheiz-purifoy-marcus-roberson-undrafted-udfa-2014-nfl-draft

Now, I don't know how much real info is there. The two Florida CBs who went undrafted both signed as UDFA. But what's interesting speculation to me is the author is basically saying "these guys didn't take the process seriously, didn't work hard, blew off workouts, sucked at the combine and their pro day, and here is the result." I also found it instructive what one scout said:

"I don't understand. Stay in school; get bigger, get better. These kids don't realize what it's like out there. They sit here and read these mock drafts and articles with their names high up and it's bull####. They're lying to these kids. I see their (Roberson and Purifoy's) names in the second round and that's a lie.

We have to learn how to communicate with these kids, man. It's a shame some of the advice they're getting. They don't have to leave right away. The best way to be successful is to be as good as you can be before coming out. I'm serious."
