Day 3 in the books...
Comments: --Not surprised that Joe Newton did not participate much today. Athleticism has been an issue, especially now that he has put on weight. It really did show especially with his 40 time. Game film will save the day for him however, and I still think he may be a late- Day 1 prospect. I thought he had a nice vert though...but evidently didnt test. :) --On the other hand, very unimpressed with Martrez Milner. He was supposed to be one of the bigger movers today and, bluntly, blew his chance. Game film will show great size, speed and body control but the biggest area of concern was the fact that he was so green and it showed- several dropped passes, blowing pass protection etc. However, he is viewed as a WIP and should be drafted on athletic ability alone (a la George Wrighster) but may have dropped significantly by posting a pretty pedestrian 40, and not showing having a good showing with the weights. --Matt Spaeth should be a mover come draft day as well. Didnt work out at the combine because of a shoulder injury- which will ultimately determine where he is drafted. Since his value is primarily as a blocker and a big red zone target, that shoulder will mean everything. If he can return (look for his pro day) to form, he will be a beast. And should still go day 1. --Dont sleep on Derek Schouman. Just look at the sparkling numbers he put up at the workout. Very nearly the top in each category. The staff over at Boisie raved about his progression following his true freshman year where he lit it up. College production was limited by a lingering injury he had through sophmore and junior years but rebounded this year with a solid effort. Superb blocker and a speedy and reliable pass catcher. But one big hit after another took him out for a while and he seemed to recover this year. If he can get back to this level of playing, he could be very special with the right teaching. Upside galore. Game film will be the key to drafting this guy. --Johnny Harline also posted some not-so-gaudy numbers. While it will hurt and force him to slide, game tape will certainly be the key to getting him drafted. Him and Beck had a fantastic run this year and he really came through in the clutch more than once, including a stellar bowl game. Keep in mind he has all but erased any doubts about his ACL, which was torn 3 years ago. Prior to that, he had an incredible season at Ricks College (which changed its name to BYU). Really came on in the 2nd half of the season and really meshed with fellow draftee Daniel Coats- who was primarily a blocker in 2TE sets.

Boise State homer here:

I agree don't sleep on Schouman. He had a terrific freshman season then had slow soph and jr. years after tearing his hamstring. He lost a little bit on his 40 but in my opinion that is mostly from adding 30ish pounds. He had a solid year this year and a great fiesta bowl against one of the better defenses in the country. He is a great receiver and a superb blocker. I could see him lining up as an H-Back in the NFL.

People/Scouts have been talking about Greg Olson going in the 1st for a while. I didn't believe it until now.
