Urban Meyer - Free Agent (1 Viewer)

I can appreciate why threads are merged

I had another Meyer thread that was straight to the point and so I want to at least re-post my OP from that thread because I laid out several important reasons about why I was so adamant against Urban Meyer being hired. That thread title read as follows...

Urban Meyer is the Worst Hire in the Past 10 Years, Easily!

I didn't want to pound down in the Jags team thread but I did want to weigh in and see if others are left scratching their heads.

-No NFL experience, NONE! Let's start there

-A laundry list of coaches in the NFL that hate his guts for not tipping hands on players like Aaron Hernandez, he knew who he was at Florida

-Faked an illness to get out of Florida and leave amid some rumored scandals.

-Didn't last long at OSU, had more scandals there involving Domestic Battery/Abuse and while that wasn't Urban directly, it was one of his coaches that he was loyal to.

-This is a pure last pay day of his life, there will no Pete Carroll reincarnation in Jacksonville, Pete is a completely different type of coach and I don't think Meyer will be able to hold the locker room together when things go South.

-$12,000,000.00??? $12MM, $12 Million...$12 MILLION, are you bleeping kidding me? Was there a tug of war with the Jets or something for his services?

Worst coach that could have been hired IMHO almost bar none. Poor Trevor is going to get off to an awful start in the J-A-X

I'm sorry Jags fans, be happy though you get Lawrence, I love this kid and think he will succeed but Meyer is going to set him back a few years. Jacksonville will not be able to run the rookie-QB playbook to the Super Bowl, you have a 3 year window and they just blew it.

Cheers Everybody

Was going to say something about the title change because yours was more on-point than this neutral description, but it is what it is.

Lawrence may just be good enough to be able to develop on his own despite the coaching situation, albeit at a slower rate than similarly drafted QBs in competent franchises. But he won't be completely roadblocked like Darnold was.

... and finding ways to keep Shenault from touching the ball.

I don't get this at all. I fully admit that it's easy for me to pretend to know about NFL football from the comfort of my couch, but more than half of Lawrence's 33 attempts went to Jamal Agnew (8), Dan Arnold (8, been on the team two weeks) and Tavon Austin (5). Shenault didn't get a target until the fourth quarter, when he took a pass and weaved through defenders for 58 yards. I mean, Dan Arnold and Tavon Austin? What are we even doing here?

Trying to get fired.  That’s evidently the goal.

Local sports media has already decided after 5 weeks he’s in over his head, and remember, this is Gators’ country, so they all started as drooling fanboys.

Last night the dean of the TV sportscasters said he “had a problem with the truth” in regard to his postgame pressers answer re: goal line calls (i.e. not knowing if Trevor was comfortable with a QB sneak, wondering if Robinson was dinged up when he was pulled from the failed 1st and goal series).

Not a Lawrence fan, but I think he should be fine. Needs some help on the OL and/or scheme. NFL is a tough adjustment for rookies and he was particularly insulated at Clemson.

If Miami does not tap the receiver down with 1 tick left on the clock there is no doubt this game ends in an overtime tie.

2 huge stinker teams.

I thought Meyer turned down the ND job when they were looking to replace Ty Willingham back in like 2004.

Urban Meyer was the Notre Dame WR Coach from 1996-2000 and while many feel his crimes were unforgivable, we are talking about the Catholic Church here...at first I thought there is no way but he has already soured the waters in JAX and almost everyone knows he will be dismissed in the off season as head coach and s why wouldn't he pull one like Coach Bobby in Atlanta did and just go back to college for a secure pay check? He can say anything he wants, Meyer is a liar thru and thru so you can't trust a word coming out of that guy's mouth.

But it feels like he is damaged goods and will just collect a paycheck, a final paycheck as someone pointed out up top and ride off into the fiery gates of hell with his last little pile of money.

Tension boiling over between coach Urban Meyer, Jaguars players, staff amid 2-10 start

Excerpt:

And while the Jaguars opted not to fire Meyer in September after he stayed in Ohio instead of taking the team plane home after a Week 4 loss to the Bengals, only to be captured in viral videos at a bar with a young woman who's not his wife dancing close to his lap, sources say Meyer hasn't adjusted his approach.

In the past two weeks alone, sources say:

  • Receiver Marvin Jones -- one of the locker room's most respected and mild-mannered veterans -- became so angry with Meyer's public and private criticism of the receiver group that he left the facility until other staff members convinced him to come back and had a heated argument with Meyer during practice.
  • During a staff meeting, Meyer delivered a biting message that he's a winner and his assistant coaches are losers, according to several people informed of the contents of the meeting, challenging each coach individually to explain when they've ever won and forcing them to defend their résumés.
  • Contrary to his public statements that it was injury-related, Meyer ordered Robinson's benching after an opening-drive fumble in last week's 37-7 road loss to the Rams, then had running backs coach Bernie Parmalee stop Robinson from re-entering the game, insisting Carlos Hyde (who played for Meyer at Ohio State) stay in. Only after Lawrence questioned Meyer on the sideline about Robinson's absence was Robinson allowed to return late in the second quarter. (Speaking to reporters this week, Lawrence said: "Bottom line is James is one of our best players and he's got to be on the field and we addressed it, and I feel like we're in a good spot and the whole team, we're good.")
Several Jaguars players vented their frustration to Rams players after that game, sources say, reiterating a common complaint that Meyer -- who had no prior NFL experience -- doesn't treat them like adults. And the staff meeting follows a pattern of tense interactions between Meyer and his assistants dating back to the offseason. After opening the preseason with consecutive losses, for instance, sources say Meyer informed assistants that he was sick of being embarrassed and if the team didn't start winning immediately, some of them wouldn't be around for a second year.

lolz

@BrentASJax: We had some talks in the airport amongst media friends. If Marvin Jones, after being in Detroit, is fed up after 12 games…now that’s saying something! 👀

@ShopTalkingWigg: Would be fitting for the fans if of all places, Shad leaves Urban in Nashville.

@E_Dilla: Baalke’s prob the leak. His shot to turn all the attention on Urbs lmao

Watching his post-game handshake after getting blanked by Titans and I've never seen an NFL coach look so checked out.

He's a real winner, all right

@AlbertBreer: Jaguars coach Urban Meyer on fixing what's wrong: "What's the answer? Starting leaking some information or nonsense? That's garbage. ... If there is a source, then that source is unemployed. I mean, within seconds."

Oldie but a goodie.

He's the coaching equivalent of Die Hard's Dwayne T Robinson.

"I've got a hundred people down here, and they're covered with glass."

What was this in response to?

.

While Meyer had praise for his defense's performance versus Tennessee, he lamented his offense's execution. The Jags have scored fewer than 20 points in seven consecutive games. Meyer, long recognized for his offensive brilliance at the college level, was asked if he'd been shut out before. "I don't know," he said. "I don't want to talk about it."
This guy is such a clown on the NFL level.

In his presser he was pretending that the "leaks" didn't bother him by obsessing over whoever might be leaking these stories.

He stated something to the effect that whoever the "leak" is would be gone - instantly. Why do I get the feeling we'll be seeing a dozen JAX players claiming to be the leak this week.

Trevor Lawrence comes forward.
