Urban Meyer - Free Agent (2 Viewers)

I didn't want to pound down in the Jags team thread but I did want to weigh in and see if others are left scratching their heads.

-No NFL experience, NONE! Let's start there

-A laundry list of coaches in the NFL that hate his guts for not tipping hands on players like Aaron Hernandez, he knew who he was at Florida

-Faked an illness to get out of Florida and leave amid some rumored scandals.

-Didn't last long at OSU, had more scandals there involving Domestic Battery/Abuse and while that wasn't Urban directly, it was one of his coaches that he was loyal to.

-This is a pure last pay day of his life, there will no Pete Carroll reincarnation in Jacksonville, Pete is a completely different type of coach and I don't think Meyer will be able to hold the locker room together when things go South.

-$12,000,000.00??? $12MM, $12 Million...$12 MILLION, are you fBomb kidding me? Was there a tug of war with the Jets or something for his services?

Worst coach that could have been hired IMHO almost bar none. Poor Trevor is going to get off to an awful start in the J-A-X

I'm sorry Jags fans, be happy though you get Lawrence, he actually got the NCAA to start playing again this year...well he was a big voice and part of the solution not the problem. I love this kid and think he will succeed but Meyer is going to set him back a few years. Jacksonville will not be able to run the rookie-QB playbook to the SUper Bowl, you have a 3 year window and they just blew it.

To be fair a lot of us Florida fans knew about Hernandez. If NFL people didn't know they are idiots or knew about it and did nothing because he was a good player

Yes he's terrible a lot of us Florida fans hate the fact the school still honors him.

Pete Carrol did a pretty sleazy thing to leaving USC when sanctions got hammered on them all from him and he gets off Scott free? Not sure why more people don't bring this up on Carrol.

I honestly feel Trevor is pretty overrated. I'm one who doesn't believe in this Once in a gen hype of this guy. He had numerious overthrows that should've been picks but had some great receivers to get him out of jams.I think he's a good QB I just don't think he's the 2nd coming.

Urban Meyer isn't the only sleazy coach from College. There's a ton. Worst X/O coach I'd say Chip Kelly. Urban is bad but Chip Kelly because he was friends with the Hoddy and taught him a lot of the hurry up offense and other things Bill took and implemented in NE he thought he was the 2nd coming because of Hoodies success and his discipline of players my way or the highway approach doesn't work in the nFL.

I met some old time soccer players who worked for Fulham a few years ago in London, they were laughing with me about Shad Khan, and how the son was given a pro soccer team to play with like a fantasy team.

Signing Tebow to play TE, and adding that sideshow to a team with a new staff is simply the definition of a red flag.

Sucks, Jacksonville has some serious fans, they deserve better.

Which Son because Tony the son is kicking ### with his wrestling program

"...Urban Meyer apologized Monday for a video that surfaced over the weekend in which a woman who was not his wife danced on him."

"Meyer added that he apologized to his family, saying they were "upset" about the video."

yah think??🤣

Meyer's biggest problem, besides generally being a scumbag, is he is running the Jags like they are a college team. From the morally bankrupt coaching hires (or attempted hires) over the summer which would have been given a green light at one of his big college programs, to brining in Tebow (which everyone knew wouldn't work out), to the horrible play calling (ceasing to realize this rookie QB needs an established running game), he is running this team like they are a college program.

Case in point: the play calling last night at the goal line. Trevor runs a nice QB option and punches one in, catching the defense by surprise. So what does Urban dial up the next time the Jags are at the goal line?... the same exact play, which Cincy of course recognizes and snuffs out because they are not Eastern Michigan. And that right there is the problem. Meyer seems to think he is still coaching talent that is vastly superior to his opponent on a weekly basis. Lawrence was a great college QB, so in Meyer's mind he should be ready to carry the load in the pros. It obviously doesn't work that way, but either because of hubirs or incompetence (probably a mix of both) Meyer doesn't realize it. This isn't going to end well for the Jags, which was obvious to most when the hire was made.

Eastern Michigan Universityh-- once a Huron, always a Huron.

p.s. Meyer has NEVER beaten them!

(google this: 'why did Urban meyer leave florida?')

The video is funny, but I personally don’t care if an NFL coach is cheating on his wife. I’m bothered a lot more by how he handled having a wife-beater like Zach Smith on his staff

Even without the video, the fact that he didn't fly back with the team and chose to hang out in Ohio for the weekend seems unusual for an NFL coach.  He will have plenty of time to see the grandkids in January.

@MikerophoneNFL: The Urban Meyer Cycle is really progressing quickly isn't it? We skipped the instant success straight to the Scandal. https://twitter.com/MikerophoneNFL/status/1444497461897089029/photo/1
I kind of thought he might step down as early as this week...this is shameful and any owner should be embarrassed to have a guy like this out parading around as an ambassador for your team. Doesn't return with his players? What coach does that?

Stays out and plays grab ### at a bar instead, what player is going to respect him when he tries to instill any discipline on this team?

How about Urban not wanting to travel back with his players after that close loss in Cincinnati? Has there been any social media posts by his players? I guess they won't have a huge practice until Wed/Thurs but i would guess some players will have a few things to say.

When does the locker turn on him? Maybe they could bring Tebow back and let him take over coaching responsibilities the rest of the year.

Incidentally, that article I linked to is super long, but I encourage everyone to read it if they can. Meyer is far from the biggest villain in the piece -- that would be Smith, who not only physically abused his wife but continues to emotionally torment her from afar -- but it is also a really powerful expose of how the entire system treats a spouse like Courtney Smith. At every step in the process, she was treated as a problem who needed to be handled because of the inconvenience her abuse caused for the coaching staff. Even in their public statements, Meyer and other OSU officials barely offered lip service in support of Courtney and what she had been through.

I know this is tangential to the thread, but it's really important for everyone to understand what's going on here. Like so many scandals in recent years (Catholic Church, Harvey Weinstein, Nassar) it's not just about one person who was a monster, it's about the non-evil people in positions of authority who continued to enable that monster.

Safe to say this experiment has failed.

And by him hiring a racist dude as strength coach when there were plenty of non-racist dudes (and dudettes) just as good or better.

that’s the biggest head scratcher for me. When the name was floated, all hell broke loose on social media / sports reporting, so it’s not like he could claim he didn’t know. He just didn’t care. It wasn’t a bridge too far for him, which is all I needed to know about Urban Meyer. Well, on top of all the other awful stuff I’d read about him already, of course.

jags should cut bait now. Pretend it never happened. They’d probably play better.  As I understand it there's a "morals clause" in the contract, so it could be voided.

Ps - the nut-hugger shorts he was wearing were reminiscent of basketball team shorts in the mid-80s. Just cringe-worthy.  And his half-hearted apology was pathetic.

This was over before it began. Too bad the Jags wasted a draft and a free agency period with tons of cap room with this guy.

This was my first thought, although I wouldn't have used the term unusual.  That's being too polite.   His team is 0-4.  Any other NFL head coach would have not only flown back with their team but they would have been in their office bright and early Friday morning watching film and trying to figure out how to right the ship.

This guy's an embarrassment.

I chalked that one up to the arrogance that comes with being a successful college coach who's treated as a God (remember when the OSU president "joked" that not only wasn't he going to fire Jim Tressel, he hoped Tressel wouldn't fire him?)  You're right, that one incident told us that a) Meyer didn't really appreciate what he was getting into moving to the NFL, and b) he hadn't learned anything from the Smith scandal or any of the social movements in recent years (hiring that dude would have been just as bad if he had still been at a college program).

Might be the last we see of Urban if he gets fired here....riding off into the sunset poking a denim b-hole.
Are you kidding? There's always some mis-directional school that many would pass on but these geniuses figure a way to keep going. Florida Atlantic as an example, Kiffin who then uses it to hop back into the SEC.

There's a college job waiting for Urban somewhere you can be sure of it...almost.

Barstool Sports will not be having Urban Meyer on their show any time soon. I applaud them for going after him and keeping the story front and center.

I had no idea that the Jags owner was having closed door meetings or maybe the front office is telling Khan that they got to get out of this deal and Urban must go bye bye. Khan probably was instrumental in the hiring and I'm not sure I trust Khan all that much at this point, had high respect for him coming off the 60 Minutes interview many years back but I was rooting for him. Since then I have seen other sides to him that make me pause and ponder if he really is a good owner or not.

Jags were in the AFCC in the last 5 years, don't forget.

-Back to the topic at hand right now, I encourage you to read that link and there is a 3-4 minute video with McAfee and its worth your time to just understand the story and the different horrible angels to this.

1-He cheats on his wife

2-He DOSESN'T FLY BACK WITH the TEAM and this is probably the biggest offense here.

3-Nonchalant apology and says he is being a distraction...now when the Head Coach comes out and says he is being a distraction, what else do you need to know if you are the Jacksonville Jaguars? How can that guy lead your 53? He is the distraction and not one of your players, that is totally bizarre.

Not a coach of any pro, college, even say high school that i have known that didn't travel with the team after the game going home. It's clear Urban Meyer is not having any fun in the NFL and I bet he did know he was going to go out and feel like a celebrity at a bar in Ohio where he knew his name and face would get him attention and likely a few women. No one can say for sure but I bet he knew exactly what he was going to do when he opted not to board that flight. I'm surprised an Asst Coach didn't stop him or resign already and saying they want no part of this.

Mind boggling how quickly things have unraveled, he might lose his job after the 1st month.

So how are things going at The U?

No No No No No No No No No No NO!

I know Miami is going to be looking for some infusion at the coaching level this off season but not him.
Miami can’t afford him anyhow. They’re barely supporting their athletic department as it is. Next Miami coach will be somebody low-paid.

Straight from the horse's mouth...

''I have addressed this matter with Urban. Specifics of our conversation will be held in confidence. What I will say is his conduct last weekend was inexcusable,'' Khan said. ''I appreciate Urban's remorse, which I believe is sincere. Now, he must regain our trust and respect. That will require a personal commitment from Urban to everyone who supports, represents or plays for our team. I am confident he will deliver.''

I didn't believe they would fire him but I still think this will start gaining more fire in the coming days with perhaps some more prominent females in the NFL who have a voice, time to be heard here. Khan basically said the Jags are moving forward WITH Urban, big surprise as Khan continues to lose points with me as an owner.

So sad it's gotten to this point but you are right. The "U" will never be anything like it was in the 80s and even the 2000-2003 era that's all gone and I don't see it coming back. A lot of that has to do with the University of Miami not really wanting to keep that football program going the way it used to. The funding just isn't there any more.

They're just building the case to avoid lawsuit...he will be gone rather shortly IMO
I wonder. Don't get me wrong, they should just cut bait. But the humiliation of making a splashy hire and then admitting a few weeks into the season that you completely screwed ### up may be enough to make Khan ride it out for the season

They'll cut their nose off to spite their face. That's what billionaires do. They're not firing this guy just yet.

What an embarrassment from the jump this was.

I have no idea what got ###d out in that post. I think maybe I meant to say "screwed it up" and accidentally put a T at the beginning of "it"?

One thing helping Urb keep his job are his questionable coordinator selections

Darrel Bevell, Charlie Strong, Joe Cullen

This might be one of the worst apologies of all time. He definitely wants out and the Jags will grant him that no problem lol

Might be good for Jags fantasy players going forward

What’s amazing is the owner saying that the head coach needs to work to earn back the trust of the players. Bro, if your head coach is ever in a position where he needs to earn back the trust of the players, it’s already a lost cause.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm wondering how long the charade lasts. Everybody knows he's gone. Just make it final and be done with it. Go back to college.

Due to the nature of coaching contracts, and the "morals clause" within, this would have been the easiest time for Kahn to do it. He could have cut bait now & not paid Meyer another penny, if I understand this correctly.

Huge mistake to take  wait & see approach. But then, this is the Jags we're talking about here.
