US Bombs Doctors Without Borders (1 Viewer)

I didn't see this being discussed anywhere but again - search function is not good. So if its a :honda:, I apologize.

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN)Aerial bombardments blew apart a Doctors Without Borders hospital in the battleground Afghan city of Kunduz about the time of a U.S. airstrike early Saturday, killing at least 19 people, officials said.

The blasts left part of the hospital in flames and rubble, killing 12 staffers and seven patients -- including three children -- and injuring 37 other people, the charity said.

As the United States said it was investigating what struck the hospital during the night, the charity expressed shock and demanded answers, stressing that all combatants had been told long ago where the hospital was.

"(The bombing) constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law," Doctors Without Borders, known internationally as Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF, said.

"There are many patients and staff who remain unaccounted for. The numbers may grow as a clearer picture develops of the aftermath of this horrific bombing," MSF said, adding all the dead and injured were Afghans.

The bombardments continued even after U.S. and Afghan military officials were notified the hospital was being attacked, the charity said.

The circumstances weren't immediately clear, but the U.S. military was conducting an airstrike in Kunduz at the time the hospital was hit, U.S. Army Col. Brian Tibus said.

The military is investigating whether a U.S. AC-130 gunship -- which was in the area firing on Taliban positions to defend U.S. special operations troops there -- is responsible, a U.S. military official said on condition of anonymity.

The White House released a statement from President Barack Obama offering condolences to the charity from the American people.

"The Department of Defense has launched a full investigation, and we will await the results of that inquiry before making a definitive judgment as to the circumstances of this tragedy," the President said. "I ... expect a full accounting of the facts and circumstances."

The top U.S. and NATO military commander in Afghanistan said he spoke to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani about the deadly airstrike, the U.S. military said.

While we work to thoroughly examine the incident and determine what happened, my thoughts and prayers are with those affected. We continue to advise and assist our Afghan partners as they clear the city of Kunduz and surrounding areas of insurgents. As always, we will take all reasonable steps to protect civilians from harm," said Gen. John F. Campbell.

The incident occurred on roughly the sixth day of fighting between Afghan government forces -- supported by U.S. air power and military advisers -- and the Taliban, which invaded the city early this week.

According to MSF, the compound is gated and no staff members saw any fighters there or nearby.

"If there was a major military operation going on there, our staff would have noticed. And that wasn't the case when the strikes occurred," Christopher Stokes, the charity's general director, told CNN.

One nurse said in an article on the MSF website that he was sleeping in a safe room when he was awakened by a large explosion. The bombing lasted about an hour, Lajos Zoltan Jecs said.

As he went to help the wounded, he and others tried to save a doctor. He died on an office table, Jecs said. The nurse saw six patients who had burned to death in their beds. Another patient was dead on an operating table.

The Afghans have hinted it was an intentional strike. If so it's a war crime.
Doctors Without Borders wants an independent investigation. Seems reasonable.

Will be interesting to see how the government responds. Already the explanation seems to keep changing.

Apparently despite them calling to let the US know they were bombing a hospital it continued. I'm sorry but if we did this on purpose we are no better than anyone we are fighting over there. I don't care what the reason was. People were burned to death in their hospital beds. Whoever ordered this should be tried and jailed for the rest of their lives.

If that's true, that's appalling.

I'm pretty surprised at how little coverage this is getting.

What struck me was how many times they hit the main building but not others in the vicinity. Like the building itself was lit up with some laser for the bomb to follow.

yeah, good luck with that with this administration.
I am sure there was at least one 12 year old male in the area and this admin says they are all terrorists. It's disgusting and it is not the America I grew up believing in.

Now imagine the media outcry if a Republican was President

Its been a pretty big story, I'm not sure why you don't think it is.

Those of you who think this was an intentional act (and, judging from the comments, several of you at least accept the possibility), what possible motivation would there be?

You are the one always telling us how precise our bombing is. So given the fact that the hospital was hit multiple times while the surrounding buildings suffered little damage what other conclusion can be drawn?

My guess is our Afghan kiddie raping "allies" called in the strike and despite the US having the GPS coordinates of the hospital, knowing full well it was right there, complied with the request because allies. The Afghans were the first ones to say it was an intentional directed strike.

This is a disgusting act that we will now try to spin into an "accident" or "collateral damage" or even worse try to blame the people we incinerated. I am disgusted with and ashamed of my country.

So you go from a "guess" to ashamed and disgusted with this country. Seems reasonable.

Darn autocorrect

There is no doubt we bombed it. There is no doubt we did so despite knowing the exact location and there is no doubt we continued despite being told we were bombing a hospital. I started out disgusted and ashamed and I have yet to see any reason for that to change.

My only guess is why we picked it as a target.

And before anyone starts the usual jingoistic bull#### attacks I've heard it all before, save the wear on your keyboard.

Apparently the Afghans themselves called in the strike.

What I've written is that our drones are far more accurate than previous bombs. That hardly means they're not prone to human error in planning or targeting. I don't believe we should ever assign deliberate blame to our military unless there is evidence to do so. In this case, nobody has even come up with a good reason why we should do this. Because our allies wanted it? OK sure. Show me the proof.

Until you do, words like disgusted and ashamed, IMO, should be reserved for those who assign deliberate blame without evidence.

Yeah. This is two days old. And, apparently, bombing a Doctors Without Borders hospital is not disgusting or something we should be ashamed of.

Jesus Christ man, you really are filled with some over-the-top shtick lately.

Didn't you operate the AC-130 when you were in the Air Force? If so you realize that intelligence gathered from various places leads to mistakes, it's actually shocking we don't drop bombs on more innocent people to be honest. Or maybe you forgot, yes it seems you forgot.

In this case the Afghans gave us intel the enemies who had overrun Konduz were hold up in and around this facility. As per every operation this was cleared by the lawyers so by whatever means Doctors without Borders sent the info to us, it was not properly documented because I can assure you every target is checked and re-checked before hitting it.

It was a huge mistake and the Afghans are not reliable, they never have been. So we are at fault for trusting them and for carrying out this operation. But it has nothing to to with the America you knew or whatever the hell you think you're talking about, it's about war time operations. I'm really disappointed in your posts in this thread, you know better than this.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

First, lets figure out what happened. The fact some of you are assuming we bombed a hospital on purpose is ludicrous. Ac-130 uses visual targeting instead of GPS. I'm betting old maps were used that didn't show the hospital. War sucks, things happen.

After all that, did they even kill the bad guy(s)?
Yeah, it was a big operation. Also most of these Talbanskis were recently in Pakistan prisons, but then Pakistan thought they were rehabbed and not a threat to the community. Because Pakistan gonna Pakistan.

No, no, no. Doctors without Borders was just asking for it. So we #####-slapped them. Only explanation.

You are putting the burden on the wrong party. We know the US bombed the hospital and knew what it was. It's now the government's burden to prove why they did it.

Again, ac-130 doesn't use GPS coordinates. Yes, dwb gave the us its location. But did that get transferred to everyone's hard map?

You
This. The bombing was intentional. The target was chosen, and hit. The US bombed the building intentionally. When you are throwing ordinance around - its up to you to justify its use.

Now, if it was the wrong target - its up to those who ordered the bombing to disclose why they thought it was a proper target - and find out where it went wrong - because it went wrong, and the US caused the damages.

Right now it seems we hit the intended target. The Afghans said the Taliban were using the compound as a base and firing at friendly forces in and around that locale. We have a FOB there but I'd guess we didn't have troops on the ground, definitely no FACs. So AC-130 was in area to support Afghan ops, they called it in to say were the enemy was, U.S. cross-referenced and probably had old data on what was in the facility, authorized the target, bad #### happened.

Or we can go with NCC's explanation and just say America is awful and did this on purpose because we wanted to kill a bunch of innocent doctors, nurses, and patients. BECAUSE WE ARE SATAN LIKE IRAN SAYS WE ARE!!!!!!

Option 2 is obviously the most logical. Only flaw was we forgot al gore invented the web and news of this would on headlines worldwide.

Really? Seems like the perfect thing to downplay for a biased media.
