US Men's National Team (13 Viewers)

trivia

=====

This is the first match involving USMNT to feature at least 4 red cards since at least 1991.

This is also the first time USMNT got multiple red cards in a match since 2006 against Italy in the World Cup.

Tonight's game also had five yellow cards for the USMNT and four for Mexico

I am going to go way out on a limb here and suggest that the Mexican FA won't be anywhere near as patient with this coach as they were with Tata. If they don't win the Gold Cup, I bet he gets sacked.

Dest and Swag... Dammit. Just walk away.
I blame Dest more than Swag. Swag was at least sticking up for a teammate, Dest was looking to mix it up for no reason.
The guy was getting the red, and swag went running in regardless. Walk away.

Dest too an off the ball shoulder and shoved back... And then should've walked away after the other guy shoved him in the face

Is there any chance Snacks card is overturned? I’ve yet to see a replay that shows a deserved red.
I hope US Soccer pushes for a review. I believe cards can be changed after the game with video review. He should have used VAR in the game on the Swag red.

He lost total control the nano second he did nothing when Gio almost got his nose broken.

Not even a freaking card on that headhunt.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's fired just for this game. 3-0 and played off the field against your biggest rival. Mexican FA won't feel good abou that.

i was impressed with Gio tonight. That should have been a red. ref sucked.

i was watching mexican broadcast and they showed a replay of swag putting his hand on a players throat. i doubt it gets over turned as VAR called it in.
It's the same feed... But yeah, hand to face won't get overturned.

How none of those mex players got a yellow for manhandling him, I dunno.

And I wonder if Montes gets additional suspension for throwing punches after being given his red.

Btw... He didn't get a chance to make the runs we've seen from highlight packages, but I loved how Flo showed for the ball and held it or won the foul. Been such a huge weak spot for US forwards for so long. He pushed Montes into that red card by winning his battles repeatedly.

1:46 mark... before their bench got involved.

but him kissing the badge was awesome. poster worthy

I loved that even though he had no timing yet with his new teammates, that he won that red by tracking all the way back in his own 3rd to make that tackle.

If it's him pushing the guy that's headbutting him and shoving into Mexico's bench and his hand sliding up to his neck then that's an absolute ******** call. Weston wasn't the aggressor there.

It has to shake Mexico to its core that not only are the US players not intimidated by the huge pro Mexican crowds in the US, that the US players are thriving off it and feeding off it.

just saying why. and yes, 19 should have been ejected as well

He wasn't. But his hand did go there, so I don't see them changing the call.

Pulisic scores his 24th and 25th tonight. That moves him ahead of Joe Max Moore into 6th place all time. Next up is McBride at 30. Pulisic is the fastest to 25 goals in US history.

Ricardo Pepi now has the highest scoring rate of any player in the modern era (post 1990) who has played at least ten games.

Pepi scoring on his first touch is similar to the damage he did coming on late in a previous game. Not sure which one but he nearly scored Ruth his first, second, and third touches. One was an acrobatic play on a ball over the top at the back post as I recall. Maybe that's a spot for him?

Two thoughts on Balogun:

Felt like he made some nice runs and opened some space and drew defenders away from CP - the good. The not so great is ultimately his influence on the game wasn’t so much different than we’ve gotten from other 9’s at times. He’s a difference maker and easily our best option so I’m not down on him at all - just trying to keep it in perspective. I will say he seemed right at home in the side and I can’t wait to see how we use him.

Someone mentioned above playing Pepi and Flo together. Would love for us to trot out a traditional 4-4-2 just to see what it would look like.

1. Didn't watch the game last night and based on the comments in this thread, I would have been more upset about the bad than happy about the good. Still, good to hear our guys played the way we believe they should. Even at full strength, I think we were going to have our hands full against Canada. TBH, I'm more worried about Larin scoring than Davies and David, though I won't be surprised if they all score. No McKennie is going to be more damaging than no Dest. Swag is the closest thing to Adams we have on the roster, and as much as I like Luca, he is going to get overrun in the midfield.

2. Re: Berhalter coming back. He, the players and the USSSF have all lashed themselves together and will sink or swim as one. Good for them; it's a power play they had to make, given the upcoming path to the World Cup will have less meaning than ever before, thanks to no qualifying and a basically guaranteed preferential schedule in pool play. What's going on now doesn't matter on the bigger stage, because the only people paying attention to any of this are the fans; we can't really do anything except complain and ultimately it's not our money they're chasing so as far as they're concerned, we can all go pound sand.

2a. Re: Davies' comment that the men's team can't spend more on a coach than the women's team: best way to guarantee the coach will always be an American.

Davies‘ comment for me was kind of a throwaway in context. I didn’t take it as him reporting that as fact, like it’s a hard rule the mens coach can’t earn more. He was on a hot take roll at the time and just threw that out there. It could be fact I guess but I didn’t take it that way last night.

The reporter on the panel said something about the US fed being open to paying big bucks if a big buck guy became available.. so yeah, Charlie just throwing his opinion out there.

Considering this was his first game and there was very little apparent chemistry yet with the team... He still showed as much or more than any 9 we've had in the last stretch with his on and off balk work.. even defensively. And he was able to show/ win the ball or fouls as a more target style forward- something we haven't seen for years. And his ability in the ball looked a clear step up from our other guys.

So I'm keeping that in perspective and getting seriously jumpy&quo.

There was a moment in the middle of the first half, IIRC, where he was on the edge of the box and the ball landed at his feet with his back to goal. He immediately turned to take a shot. It was blocked as the defender was all over him, but that quick decision to put on goal is what we've been missing. I LOVED that. And he has the ability to put that in.
