US Men's National Team (17 Viewers)

The USMNT is winning despite Berhalter, not because of him.
I've come around a little, to where I believe they are winning despite and because of Berhalter.

Yes, he has the tactical acumen of a turnip and can't seem to get the roster 100% right. What I do see from him, though, is that somehow, he created a cohesive team out of some pretty disparate parts--academy, 'old school' and dual/multi-nats born AND raised outside the US, feeling united and playing better than the sum of their parts would suggest after the disappointing year most of them had with their clubs.

I think he's maybe more like that NFL or top 5 D1 college football coach that is a better motivator/team builder than he is an X and O guy. Either way, he has loyalty of the best players able to play for the US in and reaching their peak years, plus he done well on the recruiting trail. The kids felt like they built something with GGG; maybe they're right, just in ways we don't see in the form of tactics. I'd rather they were cohesive AND find a way to pass that torch along to the kids coming behind them better than Bradley, Dempsey, Donovan and Altidore did.

And the addition of Balogun had nothing to do with it either I suppose.
As a related aside, Balogun continues to rave about his new teammates and the atmosphere in the team, some of which GGG had effect on.
I wonder how many "English" players have ever switched over to the USMNT. I'm talking guys that grew up in England and are used to that culture.

Any previous examples?
Jedi?

EDIT: Just to elaborate, Jedi was born in Milton Keynes and raised in Liverpool. His dad was born in Illinois and had gotten US citizenship, but there's no indication that Jedi spent any significant time in the United States as a kid.

I honestly had no idea. I just went now and listened to an interview with him and yeah, had no clue.

Interesting that he selected USMNT early on.

Musah lived in England between 9 and 16 FWIW

lol... we just had this oh boy we stole him from england excitement over Musah just a couple years ago.

and let's not forget Brad Friedel's accent.

I hope he keeps BJ on the coaching staff after he takes over. I also hope that BJ is much more involved in the tactical setup going forward. There is zero doubt in my mind that we were better tactically these last two games than we ever were under GGG. From the set pieces down to switching to the back 5 against Canada at the right time, BJ just set us up with the best chances to play well.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised to see a smaller CONCACAF team(like Mexico) to come after Callaghan if he performs just as well in the Gold Cup.

GGG deserves credit for setting up the foundation and the current locker room culture that seems to have developed. He has got them all going in the same direction which was necessary after 2018. It hasn't been perfect but the team showing support for him indicates there is a major buy in. So yes, the last two wins are a credit to what he has done.

I also like what BJ has done the last two games to build on GGG's work. (I disagree with @ encaitar about the move to the back 5 vs Canada but not a hill to die on). This is what the next coach should be doing.

After Scally got hurt, we did not have a ton of choices to be fair due to the stupid Dest red card.

While the 5 at the back did not work as well as I hoped, from the choices we had, it was probably a decent choice given Weah's time at RB at Lille.

I didn't mind Weah moving back since he had played there for his club. But going to a back 5 just didn't seem like a good choice for the way the game had gone. But not a major issue.

5 of the first 6 goals in MLS tonight scored by U.S U-23 eligible players
- Bender x 2
- Tyler Wolff (5 goals in 10 games)
- McGuire (6 in 512 minutes this season)
- Bryce Duke
Duncan McGuire is a guy that intrigues me. He's a lot like Dike. Huge target forward that went to college and was the golden boot winner before coming to Orlando.

This is his first year in MLS and he hasn't got a ton of minutes but obviously productive. I've seen him play a few times and he's surprisingly athletic. He's a good bet for the Olympic squad next year.

2005 center back Noah Cobb gets a start tonight for Atl United. He's 17. They are losing 1-2 but he's definitely not afraid of the ball. He's 64 of 70 passing and the highest rated ATL defender so far. This is his 2nd game (and start). Cobb has never appeared for the USYNT at any level though it does look like he was recently called into a U19 camp.

Diego Luna scored his first MLS goal tonight as well
Lots of fun Yank stuff in MLS tonight.

Stiven Jimenez got blooded late tonight by Cincy. He is only 15. And yes before any one asks, if he has a Mexican last name, he is a dual nat :)

He played once before but that was in the Open Cup, this was his first MLS game.

The interesting thing about having an annual U17 World Cup and a bi-annual U20 World Cup, is that a lot of the dual national wars are going much younger. Jimenez has been called into our U16 side recently and if he were to play in the U17 World Cup for instance, he would be preliminarily cap-tied to the US and could only play for Mexico after filing a one-time switch.

We have the opposite situation with Fidel Barajas who played with Mexico in the CONCACAF qualifiers. He now can only play or Mexico unless he files a one-time switch. That's a very committal thing. And what sucks for Barajas is he's been pretty open that he'd prefer to play for the US. But at 16, is he ready to give up all chance to ever play for Mexico?

I hope he keeps BJ around. Everyone seems to like him.

But there was not much of a tactical setup. BJ is not some Nate the Great. He lined us up with our best players (for the most part), didn't ask the fullbacks to bomb forward, didn't try to play out of the back, gave Gio complete freedom to roam, and otherwise just let them play. I didn't see any tactical nuance really. It was like a pre-season game with a very vanilla gameplan.

I think we got outcoached vs Canada, especially after half, but it just didn't matter.

As always, keep an eye on the real kick off time for Saturday

Listed time for USA-JAM Gold Cup opener Sat in Chicago: 8:30 CT / 9:30 ET
Actual kickoff: 9:06 CT / 10:06 ET

Two issues

1. Another terribly misleading start time by Concacaf
2. Late viewing in ET/CT for matches staged in PT/MT is understandable, but maddening for game in Chicago.

Fabs updates this morning include Pepi getting close to joining PSV and Reggie Cannon terminating his Boavista contract amid interest from many clubs.
FIFA should toss an enormous sanction at Boavista. Not only did they never fully pay Dallas, it sounds like they did not pay Cannon his full salary either. At least he got out of the deal.

The Pepi update looked more like retweet of an older post than any new news. Did I miss something new today?

Talk about getting sanctioned by FIFA.

I honestly have no idea why they do this.

Pulisic is digging in with all the twitter frauds

======================

"I just have to give credit where credit's due and it does frustrate me a little bit and just seeing just all the negative press towards him that people tell me about and I can't fully understand it exactly," Pulisic told ESPN's Herculez Gomez in an interview for Futbol Americas.

"He's come in and won the Nation's League, won the Gold Cup, we win the Nation's League again. Had a solid World Cup. Are there things that you can criticize here and there? Sure. And I think he'd agree with that, but it just seems a bit crazy to me."

oh, we have an almost here we go!!!

Excl: PSV Eindhoven and Augsburg are on the verge of reaching an agreement for Ricardo Pepi. terms agreement has to follow and then deal will be done with Dutch side despite today’s reports about Feyenoord. Here we go expected in the next 24h.

every time I look at the news, US players are being linked all over... so I'll hold excitement/judgement until all of these are officially **official**.

article from Milan expressing interest about Musah- but article points out Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham, A Madrid, Inter and Juve also interested.

Yup, it is going to be a busy time sorting through rumors. Sounds like Weah and Pepi could be the first official announcements.

If Weah can ever figure it out (he seems so close) that is going to be a hell of a bargain for Juve at only the $12-15m rumored.

This article goes into depth about banding in the EPL which helps determine how easy it is to sign a foreign player for EPL clubs.

here is the relevant part for us.

========

MLS might be the league that benefits the most from the revising of the criteria as it has moved up from being a Band 4 league to a Band 3 league.

This ‘promotion’ now means that a player playing more than 80% of their team’s minutes in MLS will now be able to secure the required points to join an English team from that alone. Under the previous rules, with MLS as a Band 4 league, additional extras would have been required such as continental minutes, international appearances, the player’s team topping the conference or winning the MLS Cup. Though these are still applicable and will come into play if a player has played fewer than 80% of their team’s minutes, it is now possible for a player to obtain a GBE from simply playing regularly in MLS, which wasn’t the case before.

The one gripe might be that the Concacaf Champions Cup, and indeed some other Champions League level continental tournaments around the world, are only considered Band 3 continental competitions rather than Band 1 or 2 (see above).

MLS has effectively swapped places with the Russian Premier League, which drops to Band 4. The only other league to emerge negatively from these changes is the Chinese Superleague, which has been removed from the list altogether, so is now considered Band 6.

Timothy Weah has accepted all conditions of Juventus proposal. Five year deal agreed, salary also in place as the move is on the verge of being completed. Juventus and Lille, advancing on final agreement for €12m fee.
I love this move for him. If he's able to earn minutes there, which I think he can, this could be a great situation.

If I’m doing the math correctly this early, it also means any American that plays 1% of the minutes in MLS and in USMNT comps including stuff as low as Gold Cup qualifying should be able to get to England (someone like Cowell for instance).

I missed the part about 1% of minutes...that seems awfully low. Was that a typo or am I missing something here...

I did see an 80% number for MLS games which seems about right.

The Cuadrado role does seem interesting though. Perhaps they like what they saw of him at RB at Lille..
