US Men's National Team (9 Viewers)

Some one fell asleep on the goal PSV gave up late and it may have been Richie (#37)

Edit: watching it again, it was mostly Richie's fault.

Walk me through his blame there...

First off he was a sub and the freshest player on the PSV side. He has one expected responsibility to help protect a 1-0 lead and that is to run.

After the pass gets by Richie at the 4 second mark, he turns his back to the player on the ground. When he does that, the player that was on the ground gets up and runs right past Richie at the 5 second mark of the clip. Richie seems to notice this and attempts to pick him up at the 7 second mark when he clearly looks over his shoulder to try and track the player.

The attacking player then points to the exact spot he wants the cross and Richie just lets him run right in, forcing the PSV left back to try and cover the gap but the LB does not get there in time.

I don't think Richie is 100% at fault as the PSV CB (#6) was oblivious to the run but Richie was the one who recognized the run the earliest and should have just marked him all the way into the box because there was literally nothing else for Richie to worry about at that time other than the runner. Richie just let him run in alone instead of staying at least in stride with him in the hopes to make the finish much more difficult.

I was looking at the wrong player

I think the thing to watch is not this first camp - but the 2nd and 3rd.

It makes sense for Poch to evaluate the team in person - see who he can work with as a core group, and then see who gets shuffled out, and replaced by other options. I doubt Poch has had much time to really evaluate everyone at their clubs.

Yeah, agreed. Wouldn't have made sense to throw the baby out with the bathwater and pull in tons of new guys. He needs to see what the existing core is and go from there. That said, I agree with andy- ggg was basically pulling in the best players available, so I wasn't expecting to see a lot of change anyways.

Fossey is the only RB?

I liked how Busio played when they got smoked by Milan, glad to see him back in the fold for a look.

Will be interesting to see how poch lines them up formationwise

I guess the only tiny thing we can take from the roster is seeing Steffen, possibly indicating that Poch must agree the GKing situation is a mess.

That is one boring roster. I trust Poch to sort through everything successfully, but definitely was hoping for something a bit sexier.
Care to explain? In what ways?
That's arguably our strongest roster, but with two years till the World Cup and this roster being used for some somewhat meaningless friendlies, I'd generally rather see us:
  • Include more uncommitted dual nationals
  • Include more young players who may be slightly below our older guys right now, but project to potentially surpass them

I guess the counterargument is that Poch probably wants to get all of our core players familiar with how he does things

Plus, he needs to see how the core works, which guys will fit whatever he wants to roll with.

Would've been nice to have seen a Koleosho or another dual or two that have a shot. But say lah vee

well Poch has clearly fired the first shot right at Turner, and Reyna better be paying attention as well

Pochettino mentions that it's always worrisome when players don't get minutes at their clubs when answering a question about the GK's (Matt Turner in particular).

*He adds that not having minutes is a 'handicap' that will not be permitted on the USMNT*

Swag gets the start for Juve's CL game today.
Went 90 in a come from behind with 10 men away win.

Eta...I'm pretty sure he made a fantastic tackle to win the ball in his own end and start the play the led to the winning goal...or maybe the tying goal.

Balo subbed in and drew the PK to get Monaco a very late game-tying goal.

winning goal...and wow what a goal, talk about getting skinned alive in the box

Yeah. Jockstrap busting move there.

Too bad it didn't start a few seconds earlier to see swags tracking run and perfect tackle. Announcers here I think said "stupendo" in response. I was watching live, but really only listening while working.. not watching. The peacock announcers were excited about the table too.

I think Sciaretta made a really interesting point to back up exactly what you said.

He mentioned that the one key player to look at on the roster was Horvath. Horvath is currently NOT playing for the worst team in the Championship.

In no way, shape or form should he have been called up but it appears clear that Poch is making sure he at least gets to see every single healthy player from the most recent previous roster before making any decisions.

Poch also said he has only met a single US player so far and that was by pure chance in running into Jedi at a restaurant in London. I guess Poch had some Visa issues (which have since been fixed) that prevented him from doing much traveling.

Here is the track back and fantastic tackle that led to the winning goal. I am sure this opened Poch’s eyes

That's the frustrating thing about Wes. We all know he's capable of doing that work, putting in the effort to track back late in a game and make a meaningful tackle that can spark something. We also know he's capable of loafing around and going absent on the field for stretches. He might have similar motivation issues on the training ground. Like, "OK, you don't think I got it? Well I'm gonna bust my *** for a month to show you." Followed by winning a starting job and then maybe slacking off toward the end of the season and not putting in the offseason work. He's maddening that way.

I think Andy has mentioned him before, but American born 2007 striker Dino Klapija moved to RB Leipzig for €5.2m. He's been playing in Croatia but came up through the NYCFC academy. He was last in a US U16 camp like 2 years ago but since has been playing for Croatia. Seems good news to get him out of Croatia but I think he's preliminarily cap-tied to them now.
Klapija has been called into the US U19 camp this window. He hasn't played for Leipzig's first team yet but this is a high end 2007 striker prospect.

It really is extraordinary.

This is not a case of a guy ping ponging between starting and subbing.

He is going from being completely unwanted (being made to practice on own, parking space at training facility being removed, not being taken on preseason trips) to becoming a 90 minute a game player for a vast majority of the season and then some how going back to being unwanted again.

I don’t ever remember a US player going through this level of extreme differences in how they are viewed. And we can’t really put any blame on the coach since this is two different coaches who have first ostracized and then embraced him.

It has to be his training attitude. Outside of that one mild curfew issue with the US last cycle, I don’t recall him having any disciplinary issues. I have a feeling his personality is one of such a jokester that he pisses people off in training by having the look of not giving a ****.

They way you're describing it, sounds more like his off season attitude more than anything in training. You can't fight your way into the starting 11 from the bench without showing in training every day. But he's showing up each summer... Either being stingy about possible trades/contracts or maybe just out of shape.

Fantastic article about Jedi. Amazing read if you like nerding out on FB tactics.. he's incredibly soccer savvy and self aware.

Haven't read the article, but the Brits think he's British and are pissed he went to the US. They don't have a proper LB on the 3 Lions.
Ironically, when we took Jedi in with open arms years ago, I strongly doubt there was a single English fan who even cared.

I vaguely remember the prevailing attitude being... He's all yours. He was so far down the pecking order at the time, there was no possible inroad to playing for them. Same for Balo, but to a lesser degree since he was producing and young, just up against a logjam ahead of him.

Still true for Balo. He wouldn't sniff the sqaud. Jedi on the other hand likely would have been starting in the Euros for them.

I'm talking about when they made the switch.

Balos gone backwards since then, but was seen as one of their top young attacking players in the national team set up. Was jedi even ever selected for England at any level? But hell yeah- he'd be on the team and fighting to start at this point.

Jedi was called in once to an England U21 camp but did not go.

He first was called up (and accepted) to a US youth team way back in 2014 when I am sure not a single English fan even knew who he was, much less to say how far down the depth chart he was.

I believe Peyton Miller is the youngest player on the latest US U20 roster that will be playing against the upcoming U20 WC host, Chile, in Chile. Surprisingly he is not listed as a defender. He is listed with the forwards. This may be similar to Fonzie (who he most closely mirrors) in that no one is really sure where his best position will end up being at his young age.

Other names on the roster include Joshua Wynder, Reed Baker-Whiting, Niko Tsakiris, Pedro Soma, Ruben Ramos Jr, and Benjamin Cremaschi
