US Men's National Team (5 Viewers)

Aren't Busio and Tessman older than Pepi? I guess he's 'ineligible' for this one since he's nominated for the other?
Yes to your first question. I don’t know the rules so your second question makes sense. I don’t ever remember a player being nominated for both.

A more interesting question is whether Pepi would have rather been nominated for young player, in a year he very much would have won, vs being nominated for the full award which he won’t win…

Quotes from Poch:

"We have to challenge the players, because they have to feel desperate to want to be called up; that's what other federations/countries like Argentina do, where the players don't choose which games they go to.
“The Argentinian player is desperate to be called up, doesn’t matter if it’s a friendly or Copa América, or the World Cup.”
“The Argentinian player approaches a call-up like it’s a world final and like it’s their last chance.”
“I think our players have time to get into that mindset, and if we do, we’ll increase our level by 200% and we’ll have a chance, because we certainly have the talent to do something important.”
“We need to build that expectation. We need to build that pressure.”
“We are USA. We need to perform and we need to win games.”
“If one of my players is kicked, we’re going to defend him. We have to be cunning enough to know when to kick the ball long or to stand in front of the ball.”
“These are things that may seem like small details, but they have everything to do with playing this game.”
“What we showed against México was the opposite of what we showed against Jamaica. That’s the stamp that we want.”

the youngster (15) certainly is adapting to this level well

=====================

[USMNT Report] Mathis Albert started and scored a brace and had 3 assists for the Dortmund U19s this morning in a win against the Preußen Münster U19s.

Albert is now up to 9 goals and 9 assists in 15 appearances this season.

Pretty impressive.

Offensive Dortmund players over the years rack up some serious stats in the youth teams. I assume this is a combination of the talent they have access to and playing teams significantly lower on the quality scale.

The two items that are most impressive for me about Mathis are 1) I think he is ahead of both Gio and Pulisic at the same age in the same system, and 2) he is a core part of the team even in the Euro Youth League which is significantly higher level compared to the teams the U19 teams that Dortmund plays normally.

I have said this multiple times, but Dortmund is loaded in the youth ranks. That a 15 year old can crack a U19 team is really really cool, especially when he is not doing this being significantly physically advanced at 15.

Mathis is 15 and doesn't turn 16 until May. Pulisic was almost 17 when he was promoted to the U19s. Reyna was the same. Both debuted for Dortmund proper within 6 months of first playing for the U19s. Cole Campbell debuted for the U19s at age 17. He debuted with Dortmund at 18.

That's not to say Albert will debut that fast or be that good - it's way too early - but there is no doubt his current trajectory is ahead of all of them by a pretty fair margin.

Seems like the one recent Dortmund prospect who was ahead of Mathis' pace was Moukoko. As far as I can tell he scored 50 goals in U17 at age 13-14 and 32 goals at U19 at age 14-15.

Yes, he broke almost every youth scoring record from what I can tell.

He also debuted with the full team at 16 years old and 1 day, setting the record for youngest Bundesliga debut ever.

LDLT got back on the field for the first time this season, for 27 minutes, now having recovered from his injury. He picked up an assist in a blowout against a very low division team in the Spanish Cup. Now we need to wait to see whether he is a part of the full team or not.

Poch seems too calculating for this to be a random comment.

If it was directed, who do you think it was directed against?

The only thing I can think of is the endless list of injured players who their clubs may not want to risk during an international window.

Was trying to find info on Dest's recovery... Only thing I've found mentions possible January return.

Also found this interview with Skysportsfrom a few weeks ago, worth a read.

The good news for Dest is that no one appears to have locked down the RB role in his absence. He has also played a bunch of LB for PSV as well so if he has a full recovery I am very hopeful he will be getting good minutes very quickly.

I would love for him to be 100% by the March games for the US. I just think the amount of tactics Poch can employ offensively is SIGNIFICANTLY greater for Dest instead of Scally.

We don’t talk about him much but from all accounts, McKenzie is having a great first year in France.

He has started 11 games already this season and his team have rocketed up the table winning 4 of their last 5.

Hands ****ing off!!!!!!

DFB is interested in Mathis Albert. Not a shocker given he has been performing like a high level 2006/07 player as a 2009 in the youth leagues. Looks like he is locked in and focused on the USYNT so far so that is a great sign.

Over the last year or so Albert has quickly become a top 5 prospect for the USMNT, and wouldn't be surprised if he climbs higher

I disagree with most of this. I do not understand how Reyna would have magically been healthy just because what league he chose to play in. Health is extremely variable and when he keeps hurting the exact same body part with no contact, I don't think physicality of the league makes any difference

Landon Donovan to the Unfiltered Soccer podcast on Gio Reyna:

"In a case like Gio, great you signed with Borussia Dortmund, great you went on loan to [Nottingham] Forest. You don't play soccer. I used to hate this. You're a soccer player, you're not a soccer practicer. You're not a soccer contracted person. You're a soccer player. Do you want to play soccer or not? I know injuries with Gio, but I just get so sick of this ********. People crap on MLS all the time and I get it and whatever. Guess what? Gio Reyna in MLS would play 300 games by now. Hopefully would've been fit, and he's 20. Maybe then you go somewhere in Europe and play. It's just frustrating because a guy that talented - a lot of people who are inside the camp say that is the most talented guy."

Adams appears to be going 90 again today v Karmapolice United (winning 1-0 heading into the final minutes)
Back to back 90’s on a short week is REALLY encouraging.
Was able to watch most of this and he got stronger as the match wore on. He started on the right of a 4-2-3-1 and moved to the left after some subs in the 2nd half.
When the game got stretched he covered tons of ground and was able to get forward effectively. His pressing and shot resulted in a goal that was rightly called back for offsides.

This close down has to open Poch's eyes pretty wide after seeing how low movement both Tessman and Johnny have been for him.

There has not yet been a coach who did not love Adams when he was healthy so I am going to assume if healthy, Poch is going to welcome him back with open arms

Tough game for Milan today and they really can't afford to drop 3 points if they want don't want to fall to far from a Champions League spot.

They travel to 2nd place Atalanta.

Richie is in the final year of his contract. It will be interesting to see where he goes next as I have a feeling he won't be re-signed by PSV if Dest returns to health/form.

I know Paxten is playing a new role and appears to be flourishing. I wonder if he has shown enough to get a call up by Poch...
I know he's been putting up stats, but I havent watched them play at all so no idea what his game has been like.

Pretty amazing for him to get this accolade... Makes me want to tune in now, especially if Booth is also getting time.

Yeah, I think out of all their players, he's the one who's going to lose the most playing time when Dest returns
