US Men's National Team (18 Viewers)

I love the usmnt. Probably the team I live and die by. But this last goal by Columbia is so utterly deserved I can't imagine feeling bad about conceding.

there is no grown man in the world that, when truly hurt, wiggles his legs back and forth on the ground...if I'm a ref and see that, I automatically card the guy for faking

Some questionable #### down the stretch but the Colombians are clearly the better side.  We only have ourselves to blame for putting ourselves in this position

Got the U-23s on DVR to watch tomorrow, so intentionally not reading any posts in here.  Just some comments on the senior team after the win tonight

  • really solid throughout in all facets of the game, though I felt the defense didn't have much to do
  • I know he only played for 15 minutes, but Pulisic didn't look remotely out of place out there.  I guess playing for Dortmund prepares you for this caliber of play.  Happy to see him cap tied.
  • Thought Beckerman had a poor performance for what we're used to, but was nice to see him ####### with Ruiz.
  • I know Yedlin didn't have a ton to do but I thought he fared well, one of the better games he's played with the nats
  • Dempsey looked like he turned a corner a bit, would love to see him parlay this performance into summer success at the club level ahead of the fall.  Same could be said for Altidore to an extent, really nice finish on that goal.
Very little to complain about when you win by 4.  Would've been cool to have Finlay have that goal allowed in front of the home crowd, but alas.

Really hope the senior team can get healthy for the next round of qualifiers.

I'd also really like to see what they look like with Cameron at Defensive Mid in place of Beckerman.

Maybe something like.....

Howard/Guzan

Yedlin Besler Brooks Ream?

Cameron

Someone (still hoping Nagbe is the guy) Bradley(although he'll miss the next game) Fab

Deuce Jozy

Does Bradey miss the next qualifier or the first Copa game?

So are you guys blaming JK for the youngsters losing or are we just lacking in talent?

I don't think its either. They lack the talent (especially with arguably 5 starters not there) to beat an elite team like Colombia but the simple fact is they just choked against Honduras. Don't see how that's on Klinsman.

That team was lacking in talent.  Not the age group as much as just that exact same team you saw.

Put all the age eligible players on that team and it looks much stronger.  Certainly not Colombia level but probably more than good enough to have avoided this game all together.

This stat is meaningless for Klinsmann the coach but probably does not look too great for Klinsmann the TD

In the span of four years the U.S. has now missed its first back-to-back Olympics ever and its first U17 World Cup ever.

Now that the Olympics are over, I think both Miazga and Horvath might push for a spot on the Copa team.

I can't see anyone else from that team breaking through in the summer.  Even Morris has really come back to earth and just looks really average after a bright start with the senior side.

I see.  Certainly would be nice to know what made JK be so ####ty about Landon
That is what I was saying in my previous post.

There is something bad here.  It would not shock me if it got to the level that Landon tried to go to Sunil to get JK fired or something similar to that.

Outside of that level, I can't see why JK would make this so obviously personal.  I just don't imagine he is choosing to be like this for no reason.

That or Landon boinking his wife about all you can see.  I still remember his son's tweet too.  Such a shame he was left out of the 2014 cup over whatever happened

it would not shock me if we hear from Fab's team next.

Following John Brooks' return to Germany, Hertha Berlin come out criticizing US Soccer's handling of their star centerback's injury. Now, Brooks is doubtful for Hertha's big Bundesliga clash this weekend against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Hertha acknowledge that Brooks did pick up a knock in Hertha's final Bundesliga match before the international break, but he boarded the plane to the United States without any problems.

"Instead, he now has 30 flight hours in his bones," Hertha Sporting Director Michael Preetz told Kicker. "And the U.S. association keeps him on site for four, five days without any real examination."

Brooks' agent Kadir Ozdogan weight in on the matter: "I can't imagine that he received the treatment he should have received."

USSF is denying any wrongdoing. From Goal.com's Seth Vertelney:

A U.S. Soccer spokesperson told Goal USA that upon arrival in camp, Brooks told the team's medical staff about his injury. In contrast to Preetz's remarks, the spokesperson said trainers examined Brooks on a daily basis. The center back trained for the first time all week on Thursday and reported that the injury had not improved. He was on a plane back to Germany on Friday morning.

Regardless of what did or didn't happen, this is the second time in six months that Klinsmann's USMNT has butted heads with a Bundesliga club regarding the treatment of a player.

When Klinsmann took over the team, people praised his ability to deal with German clubs as a big asset. Now, all he's doing is angering them.

Miazga had a miserable first half last night.  Hope that's just rust.

Morris certainly didn't have much help out there.  I can't really fault him (granted I haven't watched any of his MLS time).

Does Miazga have to miss any matches because of the red card or does that stay at the U-23 level?

Next round seems like it will be:

Mexico

Costa Rica

US

Panama

Guat/TnT

Canada/Honduras

Jamaica could take Panama's spot.

Qualifying out of there also seems quite obtainable

Why anyone would want jozy in is beyond me. Guy has no touch and feel like when he is in there the team loses quickness and gameflow. Thought wood looked 10x better than jozy in there.

After giving JK so much crap about playing players out of position, I have to say he got it right tonight as most players played a position much closer to what their they do at their clubs game in and game out.
Congrats to JK for achieving pee see level soccer coaching ability.

Stopped clock theory? He uses so many lineups he's bound to hit on a few that click.

Nice win for the old men.  Probably should have been 6-0 which is saying something.

Couple of thoughts going forward:

  • I won't be shocked if Finlay-Yedlin becomes the preferred right side combo at some point.  The speed of those two compliments each other well and Finlay seems to havea good grasp of spacing and runs
  • Even in his limited time and with a bad first touch or two, you can see why Pulisic rose so quickly at Dortmund.  Knows spacing, runs, and seems to have a knack for popping up where he's needed
  • Zardes's first touch is so horrid that I won't be surprised if he slowly slips down the pecking order.  It helped on the first goal, but one of his touches was so bad it went 30 yards back from where it came and almost started a dangerous Guat counter.  You just can't have that against better opposition.
  • Nice to see an active Deuce.
  • Twellman made reference to this, but LB is going to be a problem this cycle.  Castillo did nothing really wrong yesterday, but you can see a good side picking on him for his size alone.
  • Bradley needs a dedicated DM to be effective.  Thankfully, Cameron, Beckerman, and Jones are all fine here.  My guess is JK sticks with Jones, but it would be nice to see him try Cameron there since he's really the only one young enough to be there for Russia.
One other thought, we now seem to have enough quick forwardishy players now (Deuce, Jozy, Wood, Morris will run himself into the ground, Zardes, Finlay, Pulisic, I'm sure there are others) that JK should continue with the high press.  Let those guys run themselves into the ground and sub as you need.  They lack the pure technical ability, but all have the speed to quickly flood the box on any turnover/counter/longball.

Missed the game but saw the goal highlights and I noticed something specifically about Jozy's and Zusi's goals; to my untrained eye, it looks like both strikes came off a ball that gotten away from a teammate--Dempsey on Jozy's goal and Zardes on Zusi's (it even looks like Dempsey was about a half step away but stopped short when he saw Zusi get there first), so that to me they both sort of looked like the 'give and go' in basketball but seemed almost accidental at the same time. Both goals happened pretty much in the same part of the field, so I guess I'm wondering if that could have been part of their strategy for this game in particular, or if maybe that's part of their 'regular' plan of attack?  Not exactly sure what I'm asking, but am I onto something anyway?
