US Men's National Team (12 Viewers)

Russell Canouse gets his first start today for Bochum after 2 sub appearances.
forgot about him- thanks for the post.

IIRC, he and Gooch play the same position? didn't he get hurt with Gooch taking over for him? or is Canouse more upfield?

eta: I'm talking about during qualifying, or at some tournament

There used to be a time you could ask me about any US player abroad and I could give a decent answer but there are so many now that they just are all blending together, especially the ones we can't see play on tv much.

just googled... I think I have some things mixed up.

yes, Canouse got injured for the 2015 u20 WC... but I don't see Gooch on that roster, so I guess he didn't replace him. I did find that Canouse also plays holding MF... so maybe it was elsewhere? but just now I also kind of remember Gooch playing for the US up front?

I think you are remembering U20 WC qualifying where we saw Gooch I think as a sub play up front.

I don't recall why Gooch did not make the WC squad, whether it was injury or just beaten out of a spot by others.

I think that's right.

based on what I remember of him up front.... kind of a bull in a china-shop approach. run around a lot, put pressure on the defenders and hope for the best. didn't remember being terribly wowed by him up there. that might explain why he didn't make the cut?

That is a good explanation I think.

I do like the fact that he appears to have some jackknife versatility.  Tab must have considered him a striker back then, and we have already seen him play a wide position and a DM position this year at Sunderland.

I feel like we have found our new LB :)

lol

I'm happy as hell that he's starting in the EPL- amazing experience for him. I'm hoping he gets to keep that role through the season... having this chat reminds me that I've never been terribly wowed by him- and that sentiment has persisted, even given the starts (and favorable reviews). but he's young, and hopefully can continue to grow in a similar way that yedlin did last year when he got good pt.

There's a real chance this game is postponed.  3:30 tomorrow afternoon, the center of TS Hermine is going to be less than 100 miles from J'Ville according to the latest projected path.

wait... just looked it up- Hermine is currently high up in the Gulf... like opposite Tampa? pretty far from StV, if so

I think EG mixed up the two games.  The hurricane would have been a problem if the Friday game was in Jacksonville but that game is on Tuesday.

That being said, the last I check they were still expecting tropical type rains on Friday with high heat.

Yep, that was it.  Sorry guys.

When Canouse got injured, Acosta and Marky Delgado filled in at the DM slot.  I had only seen Gooch play as a flank guy for the U20s.  I had seen some YouTube stuff of him playing support striker for the Sunderland reserves.  Andy's joke was funny, but I immediately wondered whether he could play some left back when I saw him this season.  I wasn't thrilled with his skill on the ball in wide positions, but I thought he hit several dangerous crosses in good areas.  And early crosses, which we haven't gotten from a fullback since The Mayor of Hannover retired.

I've noted what I've seen as Gooch's slowness recognizing what to do when in the middle- or it might be a slowness of skills getting the ball where he needs it to make his next move.

but I have noticed- and granted, this is based on the 2 games we've had so far- that he's been a bit better/more-decisive outside, where the options are more limited. defensively... dunno. he works really hard closing down spaces as DM- but might be a tad prone to over-committing, which reminds me a bit of a certain yedlin. so who knows... maybe he can play LB.

They're saying only 13,000 tickets sold for Tuesday.  Tuesday night at 8PM after a 3 day weekend hurting the soccer family sales.

I still don't know why they had it in Jax... no offense... in the beginning of Sep.

Columbus, Tenn, SLC, KC, Col, or any points north, IMO. more travel for the visiting side and less chance of hurricane/heat-suck/typical CA and Carib conditions.

Beckerman! Oh yeah!!

Wonder if it would have happened if jones were healthy and/or bradley was eligible. Oh well.

Timmy starting against what should theoretically be the better team

Thinking I might try to cut out early tomorrow and catch the game at Lucky Bar if any DC guys are looking to cornhole.  I'd have to split pretty much just as the game ends to get my kid though.

Hey, Nick Mendola of NBC's ProSoccerTalk, before posting your story about possible lineups against St. V. and the Gs, maybe remove Bradley from all those lineups.  Seeing as how he's, you know, suspended.  I'm sure the poor guy is an intern getting 7 bucks and hour, but a bad look for a national soccer site.
