US Men's National Team (31 Viewers)

This bodes well for the March friendlies as the partner for Brooks.  Looks like this loan is going infinitely better for Mazda

Huge effort today from Matt Miazga. He's been immense in his first 4 games for Reading. He's played all 360 minutes & only 2 goals conceded with him on the field. Today he lead all players an aerials won, 2nd highest in clearances. Reading now out of the relegation zone

Saw an intriguing video of a triple-national (US, England, Nigeria) kid in Arsenal's academy playing with the U18s.  He has 13G in 13 games and looked pretty impressive.  Both physically (big and quick) and technically (very clinical finisher).  Unfortunately, I've banned myself from here at work and I'm not sure I can find it on Twitter anymore.  He's apparently played for US and England youth teams in the past.

Those USYNT prospect Twitter accounts are my crack.

are you talking about Balogun?  If so we have chatted about him a few times in this thread.

He is no longer in the Arsenal academy as he just signed his pro contract with Arsenal.

Yeah, that's him.  Must have missed the discussion or been overcome by Zelalem flashbacks.
you did not miss much.

We know very little about him besides a couple of vids of youth play.  Tab never mentions him when talking about the U20 team for some reason even though Tab had him at a U18 camp last year.

I think Balogun was most recently at an England youth camp so maybe he told Tab he wants to focus their first.  I have no idea really.

I’m told the #LAGalaxy have signed Julian Araujo to a first-team contract. The #USMNT U-20 defender is definitely one to watch in 2019 as the Galaxy look to give their young talent more opportunities
He's only 17yrs old

this is the cycle we want to see forever now

Gianluca Busio “You can see that I’m in the same spot that Tyler Adams was two years ago. A 16-year-old, playing in MLS, getting a couple games in, and now he’s in the Bundesliga. I think of it as, why can’t that be me?”
Love that kid. With Sporting KC and their heavy schedule this year, I hope to see more of him. Sporting starts play a week from today.

if memory serves, he was the youngest player on the U20 qualification team.

The Galaxy academy is starting to crank out young talent.   Great to see considering how talent rich the area is.  Hopefully LAFC can match them in time.

Dome Torrent: Jonathan Lewis played well with the #USMNT . But I spoke with him -- he needed to be focused on every single play. It's not enough to do two great things a game.  Jonathan Lewis has more opportunities to play now because he's a better player. Much better than last year

US U15 international Leo Torres becomes the youngest signing in USL Championship history, as he has been signed by San Antonio FC to a pro deal at the tender age of 15 years and 23 days old. Really have to applaud what San Antonio FC is doing with their academy

what does it mean for the kid to sign the pro contract? I assume college soccer is off the table.. I vaguely remember that youth national team play was too (back in our day).

The magic words....

"I can’t believe how far he’s come along in the last year and a half. In the U-17 World Cup he was good, but now I think Gloster would be a starter in MLS, I think for almost any team, as a left back." - Tab Ramos on 18-year-old LB Chris Gloster (Hannover 96)

I honestly don't understand the rules.

Some kids play in the USL and can go to college or leave on a free transfer and others can't.   I wonder if some players sign amateur deals and others sign pro deals and that is why the paths are different?

I thought he was the most underrated player in the CONCACAF U-20s team.  Dest was tons of fun, but Gloster was just solid.  Locked attackers up, was very clean on the ball even when pressed, and got forward fine (if not with the same flair as Dest).  Thought he was a huge upgrade over when Real played LB (and I didn't think Real was all that bad, just not special).  I definitely agree with Tab that even though Bello is probably good enough for the U-20s, there's no reason to bring him up with Gloster there.  Let him be an important player in his own age group.  By 2022, with a healthy Gloster and Bello?  I think LB will be fine.

New U17 Qualifying format was announced.   Might be prudent to hire a coach :(

====================================

The Final Championship will begin with a group stage, in which the top-ranked 16 participating teams, based on the Concacaf Men’s Under-17 Ranking as of May 2017, will be divided into four groups. After round-robin play, the top three finishers in each of the groups will join the winners of Groups A, B, C and D from the qualifiers in the round of 16.

The knockout stage of the competition - round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final - will be played in its entirety in a single match elimination format, with the semifinalists automatically qualifying for the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup Peru.

This is potentially fantastic news for US Soccer.  Imagine having 1-2 qualifying games every cycle in Portland?

This has been expected for some time, but PSU football is officially out of Providence Park. This resolves the only insurmountable hurdle between the Thorns/Timbers and grass at Providence Park.

In before Swag starts in goal.
I have to double check but I think LB (of course) and keeper are the only positions left he has not played this year.

RB, DM, CB, AM, Striker(lone, dual and withdrawn) have all been played and he has been on both sides of the midfield....

Weston went the full 90 in a 0-0 draw.  Schalke played down a man for 50 minutes

Adams continues to be RBL's good luck charm as they still have not dropped a point in any of his starts.  Went the full 90 again.  RBL is now 6 points ahead of 5th place.

I wish I had watched the game today for Adams.  Twitter is buzzing about his complete performance.  He was a total ball magnet again from the stats, winning 9 duels and recovering 8 balls.

Thinking about the first choice players (Yedlin, Miazga, Adams, Weston, Pulisic, Sargent, Weah, Brooks etc)...

Who from this group is going to take the free kicks from shooting range?

Pulisic will take all corners and crossing type free kicks as he does for Dortmund but I don't know if he has the general shot power for free kicks that are shots.

Acosta and Jozy are the two holdovers that can do it, but Acosta is obviously out of favor and Jozy is still hurt.

Looks like he is one of those cursed players

Aaaand Nick Taitague is injured again. No word on the severity of the injury. Hopefully he'll be back in time for the U20 World Cup

Sargent came on in the 75th minute and drew a very late free kick (94th) that the ageless Pizarro scored on to give Bremen a 1-1 draw.

Nice to see they're putting him down a goal... Shows belief that he can get them goals.
He is getting relatively consistent late game minutes.    Hopefully in the last few games he can be expanded to more of a 30+ minute plus chances, assuming Bremen has nothing to play for.

Pizarro has been teasing retirement for a while....

And Bradley/Trapp tend to take those longer setpiece deliveries.  No idea who would handle the Dempsey length ones.  Maybe Lletget has that club in his bag, although we'll never see it for the Galaxy.

FWIW, I have immediately cast Adams in that false RB role that Nick Lima played in the friendlies.  Give me Bradley's passing with some legs around him over Yedlin any day of the week.

Twellman has been saying this from the minute he saw the formation.  He thinks Berhalter created it specifically with Adams in mind.

The only thing I hesitate on is I really want to see Weston and Adams together in the middle of the field together.

I also have wondered if Yedlin will be able to pull this off. I won't be surprised if Lima gets called to the March friendlies.

How sure are we that Lima doesn't deserve to start? (i.e. that he isn't one of our best players who should be on the field)
We don't know either way imo.

He has been an above average (but not elite) MLS right back for his two years in the league.  If he was 19, I would be stoked but Lima is hopefully the last of a generation that became pros late.  He is 24 now.  Certainly a solid age for this one cycle but there is so little to rate him on.

His only 2 caps came against below average strength Concacaf teams.  This is why I hope he gets a chance in March.  Those two friendlies should be against near full strength South American teams (Chile and Ecuador)and maybe we all can get a better view of how he might factor in.

Christian Pulisic suffered a muscle fibre tear in his hamstring in the match vs. Spurs and will miss the matches against Nuremberg and Leverkusen.
