US Men's National Team (12 Viewers)

Twitter is just crushing JK today.  Lots of angry people upset on what seems to be similar comments JK has made many time before.
the usual, "american players need to be playing at the highest level, testing themselves... not playing at relegation bound teams in crappy leagues like la liga" stuff?

the usual the Gold Cup is crap, we should be playing Copa more (which I actually agree with)...people are railing on him since the last Gold Cup was so successful :oldunsure:

I got tired of reading the bile (from the tweets, not from JK) but from what I saw people were unhappy with:

a) JK complaining that the young US players are not pushing the older players out.  He alluded to 18 year old US players not being mature enough because of the college culture.  He was mostly getting ripped on this from people pulling up rosters from all over the place showing how few 18 year olds are actually on national teams

b) JK complaining that CONCACAF is simply not challenging enough and of course he was getting ripped for how many times his teams have struggled against CONCACAF teams

Wow, that's impressive.  I need to study up.

I friggin' hate Twitter, but is USAprospects worth the follow? :oldunsure:
They are good but I would also recommend babynatsabroad and their sister natsabroad.

Those 3 should give a wide range of useful coverage especially when so many of our younger players are "behind the scenes" so to speak in the youth set ups.

I think Floppo and the other old foggies would agree we have never had any where near the amount of US youth talent seeded into good Euro league youth set ups that we have today.  I feel like 2 weeks does not go by with out another US youth international signing some where.

from someplace in germany on aug 29... translated by google.

A youth league

Dynamo Dresden - VfL Wolfsburg 0: 4 (0: 1). Second-placed was introduced to the winless Sachsen any weakness, tied the bag but only in the closing stages to. Dresden had in a sleepy phase of VfL can shorten after the break, Wolfsburg's victory was but "well-deserved" as coach Thomas was rice.

VfL: Menzel - D.-J. Itter, N. Otto, Jackel, G.-L. Itter - May (57. Mason), Nieland (63. Y. Otto) - Neuwirt, Klump (78. El-Haibi) Saglam - McKinze Gaines (67. Kara).

Goals: 0: 1 (27) McKinze Gaines, 0: 2 (60. McKinze Gaines, 0: 3 (83.) Saglam, 0: 4 (85) Y. Otto.
love that little turn of phrase there.

looks like like he got a couple of goals, which maybe prompted the call-up?

he went to UCLA as a 17yo? so he's smart (assuming he skipped a grade) and he's got talent. very cool he's gotten the bump to 1st team practice so soon. :blackdot:
I think I wrote that poorly.   He was committed to go to UCLA in the fall (similar to how Will Pulisic was suppose to go to Duke but signed in Germany turning down the full ride).

Gaines apparently has 3 goals and 1 assist in around 270 BL U19 minutes.

For those still following Haji Wright, he has 4 assists and a forced OG in about 180 BL U19 minutes for Schalke's youth team.  Don't know if Klinsmann has had an influence on this youth pipeline into Germany, but it may be paying dividends.  Wright played on the same youth national team squads as Pulisic, so I've actually seen him a bit.   He's a lot rawer, but has top level athleticism.

I knew a bunch of guys who went to europe and even SA, but played in lower divisions... the kind where whoever owned the team had you working at their shop when you weren't practicing or playing. and there was the really occasional signing into a quality youth side of ajax or similiar.

but yeah... nothing like what's going on now. it's pretty great.

speaking of- when I was googling mckinze (needs to change that name, stat), I came across this (andy's proably already posted this):

FC Dallas, regarded as having MLS's best youth development program, lost out on Weston McKennie, the 2015-16 Player of the Year in the Development Academy's U-17/18 Central Conference. He became the latest U.S. youth star to head to Europe when he signed with Schalke 04 on Tuesday, two days after turning 18 and being eligible to sign.

"I'm really looking forward to Germany and Schalke 04," says McKennie, who previously lived in Germany when his father was stationed there in the military. "I really want to establish as a professional in Europe. For that, I'll give everything every day. "

McKennie, who was named the top player when the U.S. U-19s won the Slovakia Cup in April, joins former U.S. U-17 star Haji Wright at Schalke's U-19s.

From the Class of 2016, Americans Kevin Coleman  (Kaiserslautern), McKinze Gaines (Wolfsburg) andChristian Pulisic  (Borussia Dortmund) have signed with Bundesliga clubs in addition to McKennie and Wright atSchalke. Pulisic is a member of Dortmund's first team. The others are playing for their U-19s.

U.S. U-17 keeper Will Pulisic, Christian Pulisic's cousin, signed an amateur contract with Borussia Dortmund, maintaining his college eligibility to attend Duke next year.

"He convinced us as robust and play smart player," said Schalke 04 academy director Oliver Ruhnert. "In his home country, he is one of the top players in his age group. He is also a youth international and was also captain of his team. He brings with him a lot, even in terms of mentality. We are convinced that Weston is able to play professional football. Therefore, this transfer is useful."

Wright, IMO, was the guy from that group with the most upside when I started watching them.

yeah- definitely a bit more raw skillwise than pulisic- but that's not to say he lacked skills... I've seen him flash some really nice moves out there- but perhaps less consistently than a guy like pulisic. and yeah, agree that his athleticism.. at least at the youth level.. was upper tier. lots of pace, acceleration, and decent strength and hops.

That is good to hear.

You were very down on him during U17 qualification.  I think you called him something like "a poor mans Brek Shea"

:)

he had a rough run there, IIRC. he does come across kinda similar to Shea... in terms of the upside/downside and physicality.

I guess I wasn't remembering the qualifying games (which I do now)... now that you mention, I think he was making a lot of bad decisions in terms of dribble/shoot vs hold/pass.

I know remember him earlier being pretty dominant, but maybe too young (u15s?) where the physicality can hide a lot of things.

I forget- is Hyndman a box-to-box guy, or holding?

I could be off-base here, but I think of Iron Jack as a more attacking player, and Hyndman as either holding or box-to-box. I guess what I'm thinking is, there may be room on the field for both of them, depending on bournemouth's tactical formation.
Hyndman is an 8.  It is true that Jack may be better suited to being a 10 (at Arsenal he played as an 8, a 10, and sometimes at RAM).

I really don't see Bournemouth having much use for a dedicated playmaker.  They might play 3 CMs, but I think it would be in a pretty structured 4-5-1 setup where everyone contributes defensively.   Andrew Surman seems to play every game as the DM, which means you get 2 CMs.  Harry Arter had some injuries last year, but is a full Irish international who is probably also ahead of Emmy.  Lewis Cook was the Football League Young Player of the Year for Leeds which is probably equivalent to Emmy's on again/off again Championship record.  So my guess is that the arrival of Jack would probably move Emmy into a competition with Cook to be the first reserve CM instead of that being a competition to be a starter.

Also two of Bournemouth's best players (Callum Wilson and Joshua King) are strikers, so it's not out of the question for them to play 4-4-2.
he doesn't appear to have dressed in the first two games... is he currently hurt?

After Maizga was rumored to be going a bunch of different places he lands in the country we first assumed he would go months ago

============================

Matt Miazga has signed for Vitesse Arnhem on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old American defender joined Chelsea in January from New York Red Bulls in his homeland and made two appearances last term, in successive games at Aston Villa and Swansea.

He was a member of the squad which travelled to Austria and the US for pre-season and now continues his development in the Dutch Eredivisie with Vitesse.

From Wahl:

Am told by Chelsea source Espanyol "couldn't complete the paperwork" on Miazga loan, so they loaned him to Vitesse instead.

JK on why he did not call up Gooch

===============================

But Klinsmann declined to call Gooch up, saying that he's seen numerous instances of players losing their spot in the starting lineup at club level after returning from international duty, especially given the jet lag and fatigue involved.

For that reason, Klinsmann didn't want to jeopardize Gooch's spot in the starting lineup at Sunderland.

"I spoke to [Gooch], and for him now it's a case of, 'I just broke in. I've got to digest that for a second, and I've got to make sure I keep my spot.' This is World Cup qualifying right now.

"Yeah, we brought a couple of youngsters in, but we give priority to the group that got Copa America done. So we've got to get results now. This is purely result-driven the next seven days.

"So maybe in October, we have the opportunity to bring some youngsters in, give them some playing time. It's a completely different scenario."

Regarding Friday's game:

Best case scenario: US wins by any margin, T&T wins by any margin and the US is through to the hex*

Worst case scenario: US loses, T&T and Guat draw, and the US no longer has its fate in its own hands come the last game against Guat.  The US would likely still hold a significant GD advantage over Guat but Guat would be playing St. Vincent at home in which it would be expected they would pout it on.

All other scenario's: Any other combination of results and at worst the US would always hold its own destiny against T&T.

*Of the 5 previous cycles, the US advanced with a game to go in 3 of them.  1998, 2002, and 2010.

Can I get cliff notes from JK haters on how I hate this decision?

I can kind of understand it from one perspective.

But where I lose the plot is that he says this right after he says that young US players are not mature enough to push out the older US international players.

If we are too afraid to call kids like Gooch for fear that he will lose his day job, then it appears to be a self fulfilling prophecy.

I think it goes without saying that Klinsmann is talking about the young players who have been in the program and have been invited to camps.  Guys like Hyndman and Trapp and even Agudelo or Jordan Morris.

I don't think he was talking about younger players who haven't even been in a camp yet.

It was Bolton in League One, but it was just a rumor.  As far as I can tell he is still with Arsenal right now.
I did some google work last night and he didn't move.   :kicksrock:

Guess he will get some cup games.  I haven't been paying attention, has he been dressing for PL games?

is it possible for us to look at the alternative here... that he's being better regarded by the club and they actually want him there?

Sure, Mr. Sunshine Pumper.  But he hasn't dressed yet for their first three PL games (we think).  Maybe they've been hiding him tho.  Right?

Here was a rumor I missed.  This bid seems a bit low considering Brook's age.

Bundesliga Spotlight @BundesligaSpot

Kicker: An offer was also made for another Hertha player: Watford bid just below €10m for John Anthony Brooks. #BSC #WFC

Watford is cheap, and that's too low for JAB.  Would have been nice to see him in the PL tho, easier games for me to catch on a regular basis.  More American followers also.
