US Men's National Team (19 Viewers)

oh yes!   This could potentially be very good for Pomykal

Also since the U20s ended I've been hearing rumblings Tab Ramos could be interviewed as early as this week for the #FCDallas gig.
Seems odd he would leave before the World Cup,

Gooch continues his one man wrecking crew season for Sunderland

Goal! Lynden Gooch equalizes for Sunderland in the 89th minute. Sunderland trailed Walsall 0-2 and was down to 10 players from the 23rd minute. Gooch assists on the first and scores the equalizer at the end to complete the comeback

he even got a late game cameo.  If I am not mistaken this is his pro debut with the first team.

I feel like he has been around for ever but he is only 20.

he was such a bright star for the US youths as far back as u15s... seemed like he was inevitable. hope he's righted his professional direction- getting minutes is a good sign he has. I think you're right- believe this is his regular season debut

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that Berhalter signed the deal and will be announced shortly.  Here is the article

===============

Jurgen Klinsmann was relieved of his duties as coach of the U.S. men’s national team on Nov. 21, 2016. Two years later, his successor will be named and, yes, it will be Gregg Berhalter.

A source who is familiar with the negotiations between Berhalter and the U.S. Soccer Federation told The Dispatch that the deal is done. Another source who is familiar with national-team workings said official word will come Tuesday or Wednesday. Yet another said, “Check back at the end of the week.”

Multiple print and online outlets are reporting something similar: Berhalter will be officially named, and then introduced at a news conference in New York, by the end of this week.

“Named what?” Berhalter said during a brief telephone conversation Saturday morning.

The man has a sense of humor. He talked about delivering turkeys to needy people earlier in the week, about his family’s Thanksgiving gathering, about his excitement in attending his first Ohio State-Michigan game.

As for the coaching thing? The national team?

“No comment,” he said.

If something goes awry, U.S. Soccer does not have a Plan B. Again: The process has dragged beyond two years — 734 days, as of this writing — and by all appearances there is no Plan B.

Since the team made a premature exit from the last round of World Cup qualifying, the good folks at the U.S. Soccer could afford to take their time in naming the next coach. They took more than a year to install Earnie Stewart as general manager. It seems that Stewart spent the last five months waiting on Berhalter.

There are plenty of national-team watchers, including prominent writers who use words such as “futbol” and “pitch,” who have pointed out the messy edges to this prolonged coaching search. Over the past week, for instance, Sports Illustrated, Yahoo and ESPN have reported that only Berhalter and former Dallas FC coach Oscar Pareja were formally interviewed for the job — and that Julen Lopetegui, the former Real Madrid and Spanish national coach, might have been interested for a hot second.

Stewart has been criticized for passing on interviewing any number of qualified candidates — See: Tab Ramos, who coached the national U-20 teams to back-to-back CONCACAF championships and knows the American talent pipeline as well as anyone. He didn’t even get a sit-down.

Neither did interim coach Dave Sarachan, Atlanta United coach Tata Martino, Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes or Paraguay national coach Juan Carlos Osorio. (It was Osorio who, in his former station as Mexico’s national coach, halted the U.S. “dos-a-cero” dominance at Crew Stadium, marking the beginning of the end for Klinsmann.)

There also have been whispers of nepotism as Berhalter’s brother, Jay, is a prominent and influential executive at U.S. Soccer. Throw in the disaster in World Cup qualifying and it appears that our national soccer federation has failed to swathe itself in glory.

Crew fans, who have witness decades of history play out in their stadium, are among the most astute, staunch and realistic supporters of the national teams. They are neither surprised nor upset about the federation’s two-year coaching odyssey.

They are thankful to have had Berhalter’s around, particularly over the past year. As the city and its soccer fans engaged in an existential fight with the Crew’s owner and his league backers, Berhalter and his players did their jobs amid the smoke of this pitched battle. It was extraordinary what the team accomplished, and Berhalter’s name will be exalted in Columbus for generations to come.

Crew fans should know that the prospective new owners, the Haslam and Edwards families, are not about to let Anthony Precourt anywhere near the search for the next Crew coach. Technically speaking, MLS is running the franchise until the paperwork on the sale is completed, probably by the end of January. Jimmy Haslam, for one, has tens of millions on the table; it stands to reason that he has an open line of communication with the league.

By the end of the week, we may even discover that Berhalter, too, has been active in abetting a smooth transition in Columbus. That is how good people who try to do the right thing tend to operate.

Berhalter has the heart, brains and bona fides to be a successful national-team coach. If it’s a shame that the U.S. Soccer’s hiring process has been left open to criticism, the result is satisfying, and imbued with promise.

Here's a quote that epitomizes the difference in Spanish football thinking vs. the US. It's from Vicente del Bosque, talking about Rodri (and Busquets).

"La velocidad no está en el físico sino en la mente. El más rápido no es el que corre más rápido sino el que consigue que el balón pase por sus pies en poco tiempo para dar fluidez al juego."

My translation: "Speed is not in the body, but instead in the mind. The fastest player is not one who runs the fastest, but who can move the ball with his feet quickly to give fluidity to the game."

If that quote isn't what Spanish football has been about for over a decade, I don't know what is.  The problem is that they lack dynamism... They need an Mbappe.

The U17's have a tournament this week and it looks like good competition.  It appears a very good squad has been assembled including both Gio Reyna and Joe Scally.

I can’t get back into the full article, but I read where the plan is for him to be the backup with Bravo done for the rest of the year.

He'd likely get a couple of games this spring against easier competition to show whether he deserves that spot next year if that's the case.  Could be good.  US goalkeepers have a good history in EPL.  It'd be nice to see the next generation continue it.

Sources tell CBS Sports that Manchester City plans to loan Steffen out to begin. Am told that it could be an affiliate club, and the most likely destination I hear is Girona of La Liga.

Both MBappe and Neymar were hurt and not in the game day roster this past game for PSG and Weah still did not dress.

Really hoping for a loan for him this winter.   He has no realistic path to first team minutes (this is not a slight on him, 99.9% of the professional forwards in the world would have trouble finding minutes at PSG).

You could make an argument that Weah is the most naturally talented of any of the USMNT.  Really hope he finds regular playing time.

I could not make that argument.  I have a blind spot when it comes to him.  I just don't see his talent for some reason as easy as others do.  I really really hope I am wrong on him.

Bello and Busio are missing as they are with Atlanta and KC for the playoffs.

The Steffen situation is confusing.  Some on twitter are saying he will struggle to get a work permit in England and that he does not hold a Euro passport, which makes a Euro loan tricky.

grain of salt

"The plan for Steffen, assuming he cannot acquired a work permit upon appeal, is to go on loan to Nice, who plays in France’s Ligue 1. Nice is currently managed by former New York City FC head coach Patrick Vieira." [Massive Report]

Gooch scored again for Sunderland today.   If they climb back into the Championship, he could easily be their player of the year.  They are currently in second in League 1.

Scuffed interviewed Tab Ramos for his podcast.  Here are a couple of tidbits

There will likely be a mini-Youth Summit in January including the U20s, the U17s and one other age group

Ramos name-checked Konrad de la Fuente so the 17-yr-old Barca winger is on the U20 radar

Ramos said he was NOT offered the interim USMNT job

Here is the full podcast if you need some background sounds while working

I understand why they do it, but god I hate when they dodge those questions with "not my job".

Pulisic and Swag's teams advance to knock out rounds.

Horvath held Dortmund to no goals on the road and Brugge will move to Europa League next.

I did not realize the US U17 game was being streamed tonight.  I was able to catch the last 20 minutes in the game against Portugal.  The game ended up 1-1.

In the 20 minutes I watched, Gio Reyna absolutely popped off the screen.  There are a ton of Euro teams recruiting here this week and he had to have made a huge impression.

He was probably the biggest player on the field and by far the most technically skilled (on both teams) and looked to have more than decent speed as he effortlessly glided past players.  I was most impressed with his passing.  Fantastic recognition of angles and the ability to weigh both long and short passes of difficult nature.

Scouts from Frankfurt, Koln, Man United, Hamburg, Wolfsburg, Stuggart, Bremen plus a handful of MLS teams were all watching the game tonight.

Re: Gooch...

Can anyone point me to a US player who made a big impression in a smaller league -- say the third+ division of a Big 4 nation or second+ division outside the Big 4 -- who went on to have a good career?  I mean, after a certain age is it really worth it to follow guys that far down?

I'm sure I'm spacing on some late bloomer guys that weren't in MLS, but who are they?

Besler and Wondo are an example two late bloomers from MLS teams who made it to the international level.

Overseas, the most common name is Jay Demerit who started in non league football in England and made it all the way up to the Premier league and an occasional starter for the US National Team.

Gooch does have age on his side as he is only 22 but if you are advising people to not get too excited on what he is doing in League 1, I agree with you.

It is also worth acknowledging that 10-15 years ago, a typical US player was still in college at 22, much less being considered a late bloomer.

But in the beggars can't be choosers category we have to find what little joy we can overseas.  :bag:

MLS is a good league IMO -- not discounting guys playing in top leagues anywhere really.

But 3rd division in a top-4 country or 2nd division elsewhere and I think after... 20?  22? you can mostly stick a fork in them.  Or not.  Happy to be wrong on this -- just my impression.

Even Bobby Wood -- who seemed to come out of nowhere -- was playing for 1860 in the B2 when he was a teenager (I had to look that up).  Also, holy crap, Bobby Wood only just turned 26.

I was just coming here to post that. Sooooo comfortable on the ball.
And with both feet.

He's seeing stuff out there at a really advanced level- as Andy said, the vision, control and weight of his passes...seriously next level. And that was against Portugal? Made them look like concacsf minnows out there.

This guy named Vardy says otherwise.

the clips missed his best pass for some reason.  He had almost no angle on a long through ball but hit with perfect curve and pace right around a defenders toe from about 30 yards away and in stride of his teammate.

The goofball announcer lost his #### on that pass :)
