US Men's National Team (17 Viewers)

Ok, sure.  1/10,000 guys emerges from the 8th division at age 25.

If my calculations are right the US will have someone do that in approximately 70 years.
It's just going to be hard for that to happen with a US player because 3rd and 4th division sides don't pay enough for most guys to go to a strange country where they know nobody and have no better path to improvement than MLS/USL.  And even if they do that while young (I think Shaq Moore was at some 3rd division Spanish club for 8 months or so before moving up to Levante), they're not going to keep doing it until they're 25.  If we get a USMNT late bloomer, I'd bet dollars to donuts it's some guy who starts tearing it up in the USL and then gets to MLS and continues to improve.  Like a Christian Ramirez type.

EDIT: Or, I suppose, an Aaron Long type.

He might never play in the Premier League again, but his play this year will get Gooch back to the Championship.  Good chance that Sunderland makes it, but even if they don't, someone will come calling in the summer(will likely even have suitors this winter, although I don't think Sunderland sells).

While I don't ever see him being a fixture of the US team in the future, he's shown that he's gritty, determined, and willing to work hard.  If he can add a bit of finesse to his game I could see him still being a consideration in future depending on injuries/current form of players.

He looks like his inherited his dad's confidence and calmness on the ball.

If he was not an early grower, he could still have another inch or three to go.  He looks like he should have the frame of a 6'2"ish type player.
He looked like an adult playing with kids out there.

Tyler Adams

"Obviously for me, there’s been speculation the whole season about what will happen next, and I’m going to keep you guys waiting again.

“We’ll find out in the next couple of days hopefully.”

Pulisic out today with lingering calf problems

Weston back in squad but not starting

Big news of the day! - Hadji Wright not only made the Schalke squad again, but he is starting.  What a huge opportunity for him.

Unfortunately he was poor.  Looked lost at times and had too heavy of a first touch.  They actually replaced him with Weston.  Preferring to play Weston out of position while down 1 isn't a resounding endorsement on Haji's play today.

I did not get to see it but your opinion seems to be the common one from people who watched.

Shame, because you don't get many of these chances to impress.

starting next year, new FIFA loan rules will be in place which is going to limit teams from having a ton of players on loan.  This will likely effect a few American's who may have to be sold or released.

I know Adams is going to have a presser in the "next couple days"... I wonder when he's heading to germany. I forget when the bundesliga winter break happens... if it happens. would seem a good time to hit the ground running, unless he needs a break.

16yo, right? didn't you say Tab called him into u17 camp? has he featured for the US at all yet? (forgive if I've already asked all of this).
he is 17.  Tab just mentioned him last week as a possibility for the U20 WC next summer.  He has played for various US youth teams over the years but never in a big tourny (he is one of the tweener kids where his age puts him in a weird spot).

Bundesliga break is from Dec 22 through Jan 17.

The teams typically play a bunch of friendlies so him jumping in as soon as he is allowed will likely get him some playing time in those friendlies.

it is behind a paywall but Columbus is scheduled to flood the media with news starting next week (sale of team, new stadium plans etc).  One of the items will be that Berhalter will be announced as coach of the US on Tuesday.

Twellman says announcement is tomorrow, not Tuesday.  Odd choice to do it on a Sunday if this is true.   I think they are so embarrassed by the process that they are trying to bury it in the NFL noise and hope no one notices.

Gregg Berhalter being announced as the new @ussoccer_mnt coach tomorrow......

The ####s I could give about berhalter being named coach.... Not many ####s.
I don't like your attitude.   They worked hard spending well over 13 months interviews dozens of candidates from all over the globe until they found this hidden gem that no one knew about last year.

Seriously, just shoot me now :(

Note: I in no way think Berhlater is a bad coach but it makes absolutely no sense to have wasted 13 ####### months to end up asking the girl next door to the prom.

The most anti climatic coach signing of all time

======================

CHICAGO (Dec. 2, 2018) – The U.S. Soccer Federation has appointed two-time FIFA World Cup veteran Gregg Berhalter as the new head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team.

Berhalter, with 25 years of experience as a player and head coach for clubs in England, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States, becomes the first U.S. World Cup veteran to take the reins of the U.S. Men’s National Team. In addition, he is the first U.S. MNT boss with experience as a player and a coach both domestically and internationally.

Chosen by U.S. Men’s National Team General Manager Earnie Stewart following a thorough search process, Berhalter’s appointment was officially ratified by the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors on Dec. 1 by a unanimous vote.

Berhalter will be officially introduced during a press conference with Stewart, U.S. Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro and CEO/Secretary General Dan Flynn on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 12 p.m. ET. The press conference will be streamed live on ussoccer.com.

Later in the day, The Glasshouses will host “The Future is US” Fan Event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. ET. Fans are invited to enjoy food, beverages and music as well as a conversation with the new U.S. Men’s National Team head coach. Entrance is free; however, a reservation is required for the limited-space event. Fans interested in attending can RSVP by clicking here. The first 25 registered guests to arrive will receive a free “The Future Is US” t-shirt.

“We are excited to announce Gregg as the next head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team,” said Cordeiro. “As an experienced former National Team player and highly regarded professional coach, we are confident he is the best person to guide our program forward. We are looking forward to formally introducing him on Tuesday in New York.”

Known as a fiercely competitive and intelligent player, a natural leader and a detailed, forward-thinking manager, Berhalter spoke of pride in returning to lead a team for which he earned 44 caps and had the honor of representing at two FIFA World Cups, including the USA’s memorable run to the Quarterfinals in 2002 in Korea/Japan.

"This is a tremendous honor,” Berhalter said. “Having played for the National Team I know what it means to represent our country.  I believe in our players and our program, and together we will work to build something special and develop a team that will make our supporters proud.”

The 45-year-old has eight years of coaching experience and has earned a U.S. Soccer PRO License and a UEFA “A” License. Most recently he has served in the dual role of Head Coach and Sporting Director with Columbus Crew SC. During his five seasons in Columbus, Berhalter oversaw all soccer operations for the club, leading the side to the MLS Cup Playoffs four times, as well as the 2015 MLS Cup Final and 2017 Eastern Conference Final.

Unlike many of his peers, Berhalter went abroad to begin his career in management, guiding Swedish club Hammarby from 2012-2013. Berhalter began transitioning to the technical side of the game towards the end of his playing career, first working to scout opponents while with German club 1860 Munich from 2007-09. His first official technical role came when he served as an assistant coach during the final season of his playing career with the LA Galaxy in 2011.

“After a very thorough process, I am absolutely convinced Gregg is the right man to lead the National Team program moving forward," Stewart said. "He ticks all the boxes with his background as a person, a successful coach and an accomplished former international player.”

Berhalter was chosen as MNT head coach after an extensive selection process led by Stewart, who worked alongside U.S. Soccer’s Chief Sport Development Officer Nico Romeijn and Chief Soccer Officer Ryan Mooney in developing the profile for the head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team.

In addition to two World Cups, he has extensive playing experience in international competitions in this region and beyond, having been a part of two World Cup Qualifying cycles, two FIFA Confederations Cups (1999, 2003), the CONCACAF Gold Cup (1998) and Copa America (1995).

A native of Englewood, N.J., Berhalter spent a majority of his 18-year professional career abroad, playing as a defender for clubs in the Netherlands, England and Germany. The center back began his career in the Netherlands, playing two seasons each with PEC Zwolle, Sparta Rotterdam and SC Cambuur, before a year with English Championship side Crystal Palace.

After his impressive showings during the USA’s two Knockout Round matches at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Berhalter moved to Germany where he spent a combined seven seasons with Energie Cottbus and 1860 Munich, captaining both clubs for multiple seasons before returning to the U.S. in 2009. Ending his career with the LA Galaxy, Berhalter helped the club secure three pieces of hardware, winning the 2010 and 2011 MLS Supporters Shields as well as the 2011 MLS Cup.

I guess we know that the final 2 were Berhalter and Pareja since they are the only two that were interviewed

Interesting to note that, according to U.S. Soccer Earnie Stewart put together a list of 33 candidates, whittled that down to 11, then spoke to all 11 before settling on a final two, which he interviewed.

The entire thing is a joke, but par for the course these days.  Get ready for some “practical” Will Trapp led “action”.

pareja would've been interesting.

without having looked at the tactical video andy posted yet- maybe berhalter can get the us to at least being a tactically sound, pragmatic team that can qualify for the WC and then hopefully rely on CP to let 'er rip to provide some excitement for the fans. (when he's not being kicked down mercilessly- which we all know is what's going to be happening throughout WCQ).

and of course- if that's his ceiling- WTF coudlnt' they have been working with him the last year to get the team back on track tactically... Trapp or otherwise.

I still can’t get over that they didn’t go hard after Tata.  Just blows my mind.  Best coach that’s ever been in MLS and well bupkis.

Watch the video, it is less than 5 minutes I think.   You will have to make analogies between Crew players and US players but it is not hard.

The bold above is my thought process right now.

Berhalter is taking the blame from many fans for every thing wrong US Soccer did, but he had no part of that abortion.

From all accounts he is going to dedicate his life to scouting opponents and scouting US players(something JK had no interest in doing).  I firmly believe he will come into every game very well prepared and the team will have a clear focus and plan.

Now whether that plan works out is one of the reasons wasting these past 13 months is so painful.  Berhalter could easily do everything "correct" and it still come out a mess.

I mentioned this before but the upcoming Gold Cup is probably the most important Gold Cup going all the way back to 1991.   Anything less than making the finals is going to be seen as Berhalter failing.

It is official.  I hope the price leaks from the German side

HARRISON, N.J. (December 2, 2018) – The New York Red Bulls have transferred Homegrown midfielder Tyler Adams to RB Leipzig of the German Bundesliga, the club announced today. Adams will officially join Leipzig when the January transfer window opens. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“First and foremost, congratulations to Tyler and his family. We fully support Tyler’s decision to take the next step in his career, and we wish him all the best,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Denis Hamlett. “This move is the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice from Tyler and his parents. There is a massive sense of pride around our organization in seeing Tyler go from a Red Bulls Summer camp, into the Regional Development School and our academy, to the First Team, the U.S. National Team, and now one of the top clubs and leagues in the world. We wish Tyler all the best and we know he will continue to be a shining example of the type of player and person we strive to develop.”

One last Adams quote

=====================

"We've been following Tyler Adams for a long time," said Leipzig coach and sporting director, Ralf Rangnick. "At 19, he was a key player this season for the New York Red Bulls, and he made his senior international debut for the USA. He'll be an immediate option for the midfield, and we're sure he'll take the next step in his development in the Bundesliga."

Here is Grant Wahl's article about the hiring "search" if you want to raise your blood pressure even more.  Such a terrible process.  Any hope of USSF making positive strides after getting rid of Sunil is long gone.  Berhalter may be a good hire, but it looks as if the organization hiring him is an absolute mess, which will more than likely negate much, if not all, of the positive effect Berhalter might have on the USMNT.

Don't understand this what does this do? Are they afraid of bigger teams sending guys out on loan to make room for better talent for now or something?

Can someone explain why these international breaks got changed at least some of these? Serie A changed and no have matches right after Christmas. They use to have a 2-3 week period with Christmas and New Years sandwiched in. Now They have matches on Boxing Day and then don't resume to Jan 19th. Was this something done by all leagues? I know Russia usually takes a long break in the Winter do to the weather at that time of year anyway.

There were only 4 field players in MLS that played every minute of the season and one of the them was 20 year old Auston Trusty.
Trusty was beastly this year on the Union back 4. I can't wait to see the back 4 with hopefully a new LB next year in front of Andre Blake.

I still think they delayed hiring a coach to save money. I think they're hurting from missing the WC  (and presumably paying JK and BA buyouts to get rid of them) and didn't feel like dropping an additional 7 figures to pay a coach for a year of meaningless games.

The whole thing just disgusts me, no matter what the "real" reason is. Just a bunch of clueless bureaucrats doing nothing

It makes me chuckle knowing that there were people who convinced themselves that the lack of qualification may have a silver lining in everything being blown up and put back together in a much better way.
