US Men's National Team (15 Viewers)

CCV went 90 again for Swansea in their FACup win today which puts them into the quarter finals.

CCV has been getting a great run of minutes for Swansea almost all of them at LCB which makes him a decent back up option for Brooks.

Impacts the game almost every time...should be getting more minutes?
I hope so.

He is in a weird spot right now.  Every sub appearance he has had has been above average, but both games he started were below average.   He needs to grab hold of a starting game and just kill it.

A couple of those touches were eye opening. There are only a handful of US players who can take a ball out of the air like that and kill it in stride.
That series of moves at around :50 were straight filth. And the best was the play you're describing, taking down the long ball at pace in stride like Velcro with the first touch and then hitting a fantastic ball across with the second.

Did he knock the header down  off the corner for the goal?

Was that an every touch or a highlight clip? I'm hoping his bottom end is elevating and he's getting more consistent...if so, that along with his soaring top end sets him way up there for US players.

The RBL coach must be pinching himself that they got Adams for only $3m

===========

“It was a brilliant assist,” Rangnick said. “The way he won the ball and then played it directly to Poulsen highlights why we wanted to get him in the winter.”

Adams, in particular, benefited from the small adjustments Rangnick made throughout the game. Modifications that are, however, not always easy to complete on the pitch in a tough Bundesliga battle. It highlighted Adams’ ability to quickly adjust to new situations in an extraordinary environment for the 19-year-old adjusting to a new country, culture and league.

“Perhaps that is because the philosophy at the New York Red Bulls and RB Leipzig are very similar,” Zirk said.

Said Rangnick: “Tyler Adams ‘only’ has to get used to life in Germany. On the pitch, he has to continue from where he left off in MLS. I can only confirm that, and have already said it after the last game, it feels like [Tyler Adams] has been with us for some time.”

“He is an excellent kid with an incredible mentality, which was registered from the very first day and was taken up with open arms,” Rangnick concluded.

His ability to quickly win over the media and fans, however, was another important aspect in his integration and highlights his positive mentality.

“From the very first day, it was clear that Tyler Adams would have success in Leipzig,” Zirk said. “But that isn’t just due to his talent but also comes from how he tackles things. Little mistakes don’t face him. Quite the opposite, he is willing to learn and improves his ability sometimes within one game. That is very impressive.”

And we know it’s not a fluke because he did the same thing on his recent assist.

His off-the-ball movement is still what gives me the  Weahgasm.
His movement and soccer awareness are at really high levels- he makes those big runs, but also loves finding the little seams to combine with his teammates. He and Sargent have already had moments together that remind me of deuce and martins in Seattle. I love seeing more and more of the type  of play that explains why PSG got him.

If his floor continues to rise and he gets more and more consistent for his entire stints- and as Andy mentioned earlier, especially when he gets the starts- the kids ceiling seems as high as anybody the US has ever had.

Red Bulls address the most pressing business they had to deal with this winter, securing Aaron Long’s services and avoiding losing him to a free transfer in a year. Doesn’t mean European teams still won’t pursue, but Red Bulls can set the price now for the league’s best defender

As part of the annual U.S. Soccer general meeting, federation president Carlos Cordeiro said that the FIFA Confederations Cup won’t be played again, and the reverberations could be felt in the biennial CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The Confederations Cup has been contested every summer before the World Cup since 2005, collecting the reigning continental champions along with the current World Cup champion and upcoming host nation for an eight-team tournament.

But with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar taking place during the winter due to extreme heat, FIFA announced plans last year to do away with the Confed Cup. Potential replacements have been floated, including an expanded Club World Cup, which is held in relative anonymity every December.

While there’s been no official word from FIFA, Cordeiro seemed to confirm the Confed Cup has been shuttered, and offered another possible replacement.

“It’s done and over with,” he said, according to The Athletic. “In place of Confederations Cup there will be intracontinental playoffs to get to that 48-team (World Cup).”

That would certainly be enticing for soccer fans, but what about teams that look at the Confed Cup as a reward, a proving ground?

One of the U.S. men’s national team’s high-water marks was finishing as runners-up at the 2009 Confed Cup, during which the Yanks handed Spain its only competitive loss in a major tournament during its stretch of winning back-to-back-to-back European Championships and the 2010 World Cup.

Playing in the Confed Cup has been a big prize for teams in CONCACAF. The USMNT used the 2009 edition as a stepping stone to winning its group in South Africa the following summer. Mexico played in the 2017 tournament and shocked defending champion Germany to open last summer’s World Cup before reaching the knockout stages.

Winning the Gold Cup represents a chance for teams like the United States and Mexico to test themselves against world-class competition – and those chances are few and far between, considering Europe and South America are wildly more competitive than North and Central America and the Caribbean.

Cordeiro went on to say the Gold Cup could be scrapped after the 2021 edition.

“The Gold Cup is only legislated for this year and 2021, so it could go on but it may not happen,” he said.

“There have been talks in the last year between CONMEBOL (the South American confederation) and CONCACAF on a kind of combined Copa America,” he added, “but they haven’t been able to come to an agreement on that.”

has fab even been playing? I seem to recall reading somewhere recently that he's not even dressing lately.

I think I mentioned that about Chandler but it could also be about Fab who I have not really been tracking due to his age.  Let me rectify this....

I just checked WhoScored and Fab has had 7 appearances this year.  He did go the full 90 just yesterday it looks like.

We have been talking about how some of the slowness in acting at US Soccer might be money related.  This article goes deeper into the issue.  I will pull out some key lines but you can read for more

U.S. Soccer tax filings show settlements on Jurgen Klinsmann, Bruce Arena contracts

* According to form 990 (tax-exempt status) covering Fiscal Year 2018 (April 2017-March 2018), the federation paid former head coach Jurgen Klinsmann $3.354 million for the last year of his contract.

* His chief assistant, Andreas Herzog, who was also let go in fall 2016, received a settlement of $355,537 last year.

* The federation also had to settle with Klinsmann’s replacement, Bruce Arena, who reinvigorated the qualifying effort in 2017 but ultimately failed to earn a berth. Arena had a base salary of $899,348 and, after resigning in October 2017, received another $300,000. His contract was through the 2018 World Cup.

* The federation no longer owes money to Klinsmann, Herzog and Arena, USSF spokesman Neil Buethe said.

* Following Arena’s departure, the federation appointed assistant Dave Sarachan as the interim head coach. Sarachan’s salary, which presumably carried over from his assistant’s earnings, was $223,656

* Herzog’s income was $64,000 more than the amount earned by Jill Ellis, head coach of the world champion women’s national team. Ellis’s base salary was $291,029. Tab Ramos, who oversees the under-20 men’s program and works with other teams, also made more than Ellis — base salary of $295,558, plus a $30,000 bonus.

* Not all of the players are included in the tax records, but the list includes Christen Press, Becky Sauerbrunn, Kelley O’Hara and Samantha Mewis earning between $247,000 and $258,000. Their base salaries were around $178,000, plus bonuses between $70,000 and $80,000.

* The highest-paid USSF official is chief executive Dan Flynn, who received $684,617 in base compensation and $130,000 in bonuses. Including other benefits, he took home $836,517. Flynn, 64, has held his position for almost 19 years and is weighing retirement.

* Next on the list was chief operating officer Jay Berhalter, who was paid $466,195 in base salary and $115,563 in bonuses. Overall, he received $609,271. Berhalter’s brother, Gregg, was appointed head coach of the men’s national team this winter.

I don’t know why, and I realize it’s likely misguided due to my own ignorance, but that article and those front office/men’s coaching salaries are gross.

really interested to see if Gall and/or Holmes get called for the March friendlies

''Romain Gall is a match-winner. Romain has a fantastic quality as he affects matches when the team needs it." - Malmö FF coach Uwe Rosler on Romain Gall

I know it is a complicated situation but I am not a fan of the women's national team drawing salaries from the federation.

Women's soccer might not be growing at the club level here in the US but it is starting to find a foothold in places like Mexico and Spain.

Looks like Terrence Boyd may get a chance to impress early as the media tweets are predicting he will start the CCL game for Toronto in what in expected to be hot and harsh conditions in Panama tomorrow.

I've never liked this situation either.

England is another place where women's soccer is gaining some traction.

So looking deeper into this, the two highest paid defenders in MLS now are both American (Aaron Long and Tim Parker) and both play for NYR.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the roster works out with so many cap resources put into the starting central defense.  This is something no MLS team has tried before.

This whole situation has an unusual stench to me.  Something else is going on that no one seems to be able to uncover

Darlington Nagbe just unexpectedly spoke to the media and said he’s happy in Atlanta #ATLUTD

He said "personal reasons" and de Boer said "personal issues." FdB said the door has always been open for Nagbe to join the first team, and the decision was the player's. It's a weird situation and we still don't have all the facts.

This lineup won't scare anyone (missing Giovinco, Altidore and Vazquez makes this team look so much weaker offensively).

Bradley, Marky Mark and Boyd are starting.  Akinola is listed as a sub

https://twitter.com/torontofc/status/1098011541490880513
I did miss that Griffin Dorsey is breaking his cherry tonight.  Dorsey is a U20 USMNT player and played 2 years at Indiana before signing a Generation Adidas contract and being drafted recently by TFC.

Well that is enough of that :)   I am tapping out.

Dear god, Toronto looks every bit like an MLS team that missed the playoffs and that are missing/lost its best offensive players in the off season, playing its first game of the year.  This is dreadful.  Down 3-0 and deserved so.

I don't think you're giving appropriate credit for a team that went to a Panamanian CCL debutante's home turf and kept it to a manageable 0-4 loss.  The attack was bad, but that back line was putrid.  When did Ciman become flat out bad?  I mean, MLS bad?

this is a pretty cool stat

I believe for the first time ever, Americans have participated in 4 different Champions Leagues in one month: UEFA, Copa Libertadores, AFC, CONCACAF

And this could be 5 if Federico Diaz plays in the OFC Champions League which starts soon.  Diaz plays for a Samoan club.

That leaves only Africa left...

here is some trivia.

Name the 5 US players in history with more than 1 goal at the National team level before age 19. (Hint: neither Donovan or DMB did this)
