The one big mistake he had in qualifying came at Canada when he did exactly what you should never do in a strong wind against you as he cleared the ball high and into the middle, where the wind killed the clearance and led directly to Canada's first goal.

Yes, near post is #1 priority and he wasn't close.  To another point, yes, everybody that's played is thinking goal as an attacker. But it was from an angle that has such a ridiculously low scoring percentage that I warn my kids to cross that not shoot. Maybe that was going through whorebath's mind - no immediate threat to near post so I'll just chill.  But the way he played it gets my keeper benched the next game if not at half (granted it's high school so no sub limits).

Mud could've played a factor as movement would be limited. But IF it was a shot: 1. Kudos to the guy for recognizing in a millisecond to shoot and not cross. I mean, they are trained to look for stuff like that. 2. Boo on a national level keeper to not be in proper position.  I played for 30+ years and have coached for 26...99 times out of 100, that would be a cross. Again, I'll go rewatch and post once I figure out I was wrong (which it sounds like I will be).  Still of the belief that either way, subpar keeper moment.

Whether or not it was a cross or shot (looked like a shot to me), Horvath was out of position.   Cannon looked to have the cross blocked so to me it that makes the GK positioning even worse. However the mud may have been messing with his head which is why he was out.

Dani Alves will leave Barcelona when his contract expires this summer, the player confirmed on social media Wednesday.

The Brazilian right-back, 39, joined the club in November of 2021 on a free transfer and was a key part of the initial resurgence of Barcelona under Xavi Hernandez. He played in 14 LaLiga matches, scoring once with three assists upon his return to the club after six years away.

His contract was up at the end of the season and sources confirmed to ESPN that he was told on Wednesday it would not be renewed.

His six-month contract had been estimated to pay the LaLiga player minimum of 150,000 euros, in the club's efforts to stay under the league's salary cap.

Alves had previously stated his willingness to stay on for the 2022-23 season but sources have told ESPN that Barcelona are keen on signing Cesar Azpilicueta to reinforce the defence and they also have Sergino Dest at that spot.

Sources have told ESPN that Azpilicueta is keen on a move to Barca and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said last month that negotiations are continuing. Barcelona are also weighing the future of Oscar Minguez and the club recently renewed the contract of Sergi Roberto.

So apparently FIFA agrees that Foxboro isn't a great venue.  I like to think Kraft > Snyder was the tie-break.

How was Snyder involved?  I thought the DC venue was pulled from the bid.

I don't like the choice of Foxboro over Baltimore at all.  The sport is simply more popular in that area of the country than it is up here.

The Krafts do have a certain way with people that seems to help them in these situations.

The only very minor upside here is that maybe this gives the Krafts another avenue via politicians and sponsors to get a soccer stadium built before I die.

DC doesn't have a venue worthy of a world cup because Dan Snyder took a crap stadium and made it worse.

Baltimore's stadium is really nice, but it just isn't a city of that caliber IMO.

I keep reading about "popular" and whatnot -- but this isn't DC United vs Cincy on a Wednesday night or Palace v Villa at 7:30am on a Saturday morning.  It's the world cup.  People are going to show up.

IMO, it has nothing to do with people showing up.  As you said they are always going to show up. 

For me, It is about rewarding areas of the country that have supported the sport.  Obviously FIFA does not give two ####s about such things.

I agree.  I think if it was a for sure 23 man roster, then we wouldn't bring 2 left backs.  I think we do if it's a 26 man roster, but I still think Dest would be the assumed first choice backup at LB with Yedlin or Cannon(or whichever RB is chosen) playing RB if Jedi gets hurt/needs a rest etc.

IMO Denver got #####slapped for that pathetic Nations League game final game.  Even the Mexico fans didn't show in mass.

Bryan Reynolds (remember him?) out on loan to... a newly promoted/likely bottom table team in Belgium's top flight.  Equivalent of a bad or very bad MLS team, more or less.

Boom.  I just went to 538's datasets looking for club data and saw a file there with "intl" in the title.  Which is weird since they haven't published anything on their site re: international club ratings for a long time.

I downloaded it, and... it's current!  This will be a much better ranking system than FIFA or some of others out there.

So if Brazil is City or Liverpool, England are Spurs, the US and Mexico are good mid-table teams and Wales and Iran are lesser mid-table teams.

Something like West Ham vs Wolves on a neutral ground for our two winnable WC games.  And England are by no means out of reach for this squad.

Also, the two games vs Uruguay and Morocco show here as excellent tune ups.

had a meeting yesterday including our acoustical consultant from Mexico, who mentioned the word "puto".

I stopped the meeting in it's tracks and asked him directly exactly what the meaning/intent was behind the word.... because I had a Mexi-friend previously tell me the word is essentially meaningless, or the equivalent of yelling #####. He reinforced FIFA's verdict about it- ugly, hostile intent... even while saying it's something you might say to buddy to break their balls. 

tl;dr- it's the Mexican women's team's fault.

 
There is way too much to post but GGG threw out the first ball and sang at the Cubs game today.  Safe to say Watke and others are having a field day :)

Today at 4 vs St Kitts and Nevis is first match. 

Canada, then Cuba next.

Curious if Canada is also experiencing a tip of the iceberg for development.

 
Watching the U20 game on delay.

Some dicey reffing in the first 20. A non-foul against Caden around 10'...basically the same foul Nips was red carded on last game.

And then a US player is steamrolled in the box by a jumping opponent...clear as day foul/PK. But the ref called the foul on the US player. (Was overturned with VAR).

So far, it's what you'd expect. St Kitts looks like a rec league team doing everything in their power to stay with the pros of the US. Lacking shape, skill or fitness. But only 1-0 in the 25th.

 
Another very late VAR pk on a handball. Caden finishes (Cade finished the first one).

Cowell looks the most dangerous so far.

Also liking the holding MF/CB as well as their #16 (who's playing like a 10)

 
I am not even sure this qualifies as a light scrimmage but I guess you have to start some where. 

St Kitts does not look like they are even trying any more, although being down a TD and field goal can take the sting out of a game :)

The lack of sophistication is interesting. They looked like they were playing a 4-4-2, but completely flat across each line, with huge gaps everywhere, particular between the lines. The US MFs in particular seemed shocked at how much room and time they had every time they received a pass.
