US Men's National Team (25 Viewers)

Do you know why Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic are already through to round of 16?

yes.   Very strange format this year.

*Top 16 teams were seeded into the group stage.

*All the rest went into qualifying

*The 4 top teams from qualifying went directly into the round of 16 (Puerto Rico, Curacao, Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua)

*The top 3 from each group will join the qualifiers in the round of 16.

US plays Cuba today at 8:30. They need to win to win the group and move on to round of 16.
I figure you know but this wasn't clear to me as written. On 4 points through 2 games, the US is already on to the round of 16 since the top 3 from the group of 4 advance.

And there really isn't much difference in this weird format from finishing 1st or 2nd. Either of those spots and we cannot play Mexico before the final. And unless we have a crazy turn in GD, we should be through as 2nd even with a loss vs Cuba.

Dominant half. Cuba playing way too high and not nearly tight enough in the midfield (giving WAY too much room to make those line breaking passes) but still a really nice performance on a mediocre pitch.

Is the plan still to bring vargas in the knockout rounds?

I'm a little behind- half time for me....but probably their weakest half as a unit, despite the well taken goals. Still played well though.

I really like how they are always trying to find the seams through the middle of the park, instead of just hitting it wide (where it's always open). Against, Paxton is legit.

And this is with some new guys- 17 and 19, and the LB playing RB. Neither FB look particularly good, and there's some spacing issues in the MF following the play (they are letting themselves get too stretched out vertically in the middle), and yet another dominant performance relative to the opposition. They're not playing down. Honestly, they could/should've beat CAN by 5 goals, which is part of why that draw didn't worry me.

If the first half was their weakest, the second half dropped the bottom out. Credit to Cuba for upping the fight and bringing the CONCACAF, but the US MF issues with spacing were exacerbated in the 2nd half as they moved the ball slower and found the second and usually first balls harder to come by.

The field definitely didn't help, but it felt like a weaker MF unit that lost control. Still didn't cede much, but their least dominant half with far too many sloppy balls through the middle to nobody leading directly to counters, or at least a shift in possession deeper into US territory.

Also didn't like the needless yellows falling for the concacaf. Hopefully do we sent bite them later on. The Cade yellow...seemed like the second he came on, Cuba had a guy in his face. Felt like Cade made a run and the guy just put himself in the way, more than Cade steamrolling him for the yellow.

Just to confirm the report by@ksteurbaut, the Griffin Yow, 19, transfer from DC United to Westerlo is now agreed. He will fly to Belgium tomorrow for a medical and final signatures. He will be a teammate of fellow American Bryan Reynolds on the newly promoted club

I'm left handed and was probably better with my right foot, just because I worked hard to get better with my right.

In the end both feet were still bad, so there's that.

Paul Pogba to Juventus, confirmed and here we go! Full agreement now completed on a free transfer. Deal to be signed at the beginning of July, it’s done and sealed. #Juve Pogba will be in Italy in two weeks. Juve sold him for €100m six years ago - now he’s back for free.

my guess is GGG won't do it but we could be on track to likely be the only team in WC history to roster all back up keepers if GGG just blindly rostered his top 3.

and right on cue, Obed Vargas is injured and won't join the U20's.  Schmetzer even ominously said "it's not good"

Back injury.

That's a bummer. Good thing this particular group seems to have multiple capable creative types in the middle of the field. (or at least that's how they looked in the FIRST half last night)

Obed has been playing more of DM for Seattle than anything creative.  I am unsure what his position would be on this team though.

I’m left handed (writing, eating) but right footed(and handed for throwing).
My talent level was unfortunately pretty common

Unfortunately, the US is the second game of a double header tomorrow night.  That means the field is likely to be a quagmire.

Only one team went 3-0 in the group stage and that was the home team Honduras, who if things play out, the US will meet in the semi finals for the right to qualify for the Olympics (getting to the semi's qualifies the US for U20 WC).

Source tells CBS Sports that Zack Steffen is indeed set to leave Manchester City this summer in pursuit of minutes. Am told it would be on loan though. Talks underway.

Chances of leaving were put as "likely," per source

the field vs Cuba was a real mess. definitely affected the US play. a worse field would be... worse.

I still believe in the old cliche that the worse the field the more it helps the weaker team.
absolutely.

but with some caveats. Cuba had some surprisingly skilled players who were fine with the ball at feet in their game- their approach seemed to be to advance the ball through dribbling past the first defender, draw the second defender and use the newly opened space to outlet. other than the US being better, particularly with their defensive shape, Cuba seemed ok. the US also has similarly skilled players off the dribble, but as a team uses quicker, longer passes, usually on the ground- that style of play wasn't well suited to that field the other night.

Say what you want about Pogba, but that is some damn good piece of business by Juve.

Between that and Inter selling Lukaku and then taking him back on load, Italian giants are taking advantage of EPL teams...

Miami, Fl – Concacaf has announced an updated match schedule for the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship (CU20C) currently taking place in Honduras.

The city of San Pedro Sula has been affected by very heavy rainfall over the last week. Taking this into account, as well as the current conditions of the playing surface at Estadio Morazan, Concacaf and the Local Organizing Committee have made the decision to relocate a number of the matches to Estadio Yankel Rosenthal and Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano

Serie A club Spezia are reportedly closing in on a deal for 24 year old USMNT striker Haji Wright, per @DiMarzio.  In 2021, Spezia were taken over by US investor Robert Platek -- who is also the owner of Haji's current club in Denmark: SønderjyskE

So United let him go on a free, then bought him for a cool 100 million, then let him go on a free again.  Is this the worst bit of business by any team, ever?

Just wait until he gives a ####, at least up and through the WC, resulting in being the top ten player in the world he should be all the time...it will look even worse....

The silver lining I guess is that he won't give a #### for too long.

these would be good for Pulisic but it may not matter much because both openings will likely be filled by big name players I guess

[Di Marzio] Chelsea are working on Juventus' centre-back #DeLigt. @ChelseaFC plan to offer maximum €40/45m + #Werner for him

[Romano] Hakim Ziyech can leave Chelsea this summer, confirmed. AC Milan are interested in signing him - talks are already ongoing with player’s camp. Ziyech would be open to joining AC Milan, talks will continue in the coming days

ok, Bale to LAFC can go one of two ways

1) Bale gets a ton of playing time, has full confidence and form going into the WC

2) A young Concacaf player looking to make a name for himself by getting stuck in on Bale butchers him and hurts him.

I think when you couple in the travel, and the turf to number 2, there is a chance this move hurts Wales more than it helps them.

Thoughts?

Paredes and Ledesma have scored in preseason play today.

Paredes was involved in all 3 goals in his game including his goal.
Do you know what position he played?

I think I've mentioned before but I'm a big fan of Paredes. It seems he has found a nice club situation as well. Good club in a top league, but not such a big club where he's buried and can't really earn playing time.

I think this gives him the opportunity to really break out over the next year or two.

What is the over/under before Doyle starts trolling the Euro snobs with "Wales is sending their best player to MLS, why aren't we?"

:lmao:
