US Men's National Team (15 Viewers)

NewlyRetired said:
Miami, Fl – Concacaf has announced an updated match schedule for the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship (CU20C) currently taking place in Honduras.

The city of San Pedro Sula has been affected by very heavy rainfall over the last week. Taking this into account, as well as the current conditions of the playing surface at Estadio Morazan, Concacaf and the Local Organizing Committee have made the decision to relocate a number of the matches to Estadio Yankel Rosenthal and Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano
is the game still tonight at 8:30? or has that been moved as well?

I don't have FS2.

and I can't find this anywhere else... spanish networks, youtube or FB.

anybody know where this is playing?
nowhere. that's where. I thought concacaf was showing all the games live on their youtube channel... I guess not.

I did a day trial of FUBO.

NIC fighting gamely. US has a couple guys in I'm not liking (#13 in particular) who aren't doing their teammates any favors with their passing and decision making. but regardless- it's been one-way traffic, with the NIC GK and defenders needing to do a lot of work around their own goal-line... throwing bodies in to block cross after cross (tbf- US again suffering from final-ball-itis) as well as at least a couple goal-line clearances to go with the GK making a bunhc of good saves.

but it was ultimately Luna putting the team on his back at the 1st half death... beating two guys off the dribble to the line and then finally putting a ball onto somebody's head in front of goal- fortunately that head was Quinn's, who put a solid header on goal (almost cleared off the line again). Quinn did have a lot of oops with his final ball through the half- not terrible, but always in great spots and just not connecting. He could/should have had another first half hat-trick.

but 1-0 at the half takes a lot of pressure off the US. NIC wasn't really set up to do anything but absorb pressure with a lot of bodies deep and hope for a couple guys to counter... which never really happened. they'll have to change things up to get more bodies forward, which should open the field up for the US to pump in some goals.

Good to see the goals starting to flow.  This team creates a ton of chance (which I guess they should be against these minnows).

Looks like Costa Rica is up next for the US.   That game will be for the U20 qualifying spot and then if they get past that one, Honduras awaits, who has been rolling every one (4 wins, 13GF 1GA), which will be a very tough game to qualify for Olympics

yeah....

Luna and McGlynn for me.

Cade up and down, with mostly ups- but the downs (poor final touch too much, and noticing some laziness in the 2nd half here covering runners) shouldn't be happening so much vs poor competition.

Luna pops off the screen.   I am very interested to see how he does against better comp, which should be coming after this game.
Luna strikes me as a guy who will play even better with better guys around him. He has all the ability in the world off the dribble- but is also looking to combine through the middle and/or feed guys in the middle off the dribble down the flank. saw him show back deeper as well (successfully, no surprise) and even offer some defense.

but yeah- will be interesting to see him vs the CRs and MEXs of this region.

I wonder too- has he been playing for RSL? any idea how he's doing in MLS?

and I keep forgetting to include Paxton (I think because he's been getting rested through these early games), who is clearly the elite player in this group.

Only ~2 minutes I think but he just transferred to RSL at the beginning of June and he barely got unpacked before he was off training with the U20's.   Hopefully he will see some good minutes this summer and fall for RSL.

I mean...

Jimmy O.@soccer_usa_

Diego Luna took his penalty with his right foot. He took a corner with his left…. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that, or I can’t recall it before. This dude just has immense skill.

it should make every one really excited that the USL has kids like Luna and Gomez just waiting their turn.

Yeah, let's find two dozen Lunas every year and see how things shake out from 17-20 years old.  There's going to be a ton of flash in the pans and near misses for every legit hit and as they start playing younger it'll get harder to tell who's who at first.

Nips continuing the hottest run of his career with another goal tonight.  8 goals in 8 games.

He never even scored 8 goals across an entire season before this.

It's a crying shame the WC isn't happening right now.  This has to be about as healthy as we've been in a long time.

Who'd miss if the first game was today?  Miles and... ??

Gio....Richards?

Gio, I think, is healthy but not game ready.
Hard to say for sure, but I think Reyna has been healthy long enough that if we needed him today he'd have been ready.

I haven't heard anything about Richards in a while though - wonder what his current deal is.

Regardless, this is way healthier than we're likely to be in five months.

I am not sure he would be ready.   Ignore touch for second because that is likely the first thing to come back to a player like Gio.

But timing and match fitness are at absolute zero right now.    He would not even have a single friendly to play in before the WC if we needed him this summer.

But outside of touch, fitness and timing, by far the most important item that Reyna would never have if he had to play in the WC would be confidence in his body.    That is going to be a huge hurdle to get over.  His body has failed him, almost immediately, time and again the past year.

I personally think we are  lucky to not have the summer WC.   I am hoping against hope that we won't experience the historic amount of injuries in 2022 that we did in 2021.   Might be a fools hope though.... :(

ok- some relative upsets yesterday in u20.

Dom Rep beat El Sal 5-4 (biggest surprise of the round and I'd guess the biggest win in history for them... doubt they've progressed in a tournament like this before at any level).

CAN lost to GUAT in PKs. (OMG Guat could beat the US!!)

Puerto Rico beat MEX 6-0

one of those may be flipped around.

I think the US plays the winner of the PAN v HON, if they can get past CR.

HON, as andy pointed out, seems to be playing at a top level here- and has the home field advantage.

eta: and HON eliminated the US last time out in the u20 tournament, ending their WC and Olympic dreams

The US won the last U20 tournament and had a nice run in the U20 WC even beating France 3-2.

But you are right that Honduras did knock the US out of U23 qualifying.

Note that this is the first time they have combined qualifying for U20 and U23.  it has always been separate before this.

Turner was officially announced by Arsenal today even though he was signed way back in February.  He will start attending training sessions on July 1st I believe.

I distinctly remember that Oly knock-out (including a GK howler... who was it- Gaga?), but something didn't feel right with the WC inclusion- thanks for the correction.

Did they offload their 2nd string GK yet?

I do think Turner has gotten a lot better with his feet since when he first got called up for the US... but at the pace of the EPL? I hope it goes for well for him there, or somewhere else if he gets loaned out.

Gaga was not involved in U23 qualifying (I think he was only 16-17 at the time).

The howler you remember was from (now Mexican tied) David Ochoa.

So United let him go on a free, then bought him for a cool 100 million, then let him go on a free again.  Is this the worst bit of business by any team, ever?
Yes, yes it is.  At least Chelsea is getting a loan fee back for Lukaku.

Just wait until he gives a ####, at least up and through the WC, resulting in being the top ten player in the world he should be all the time...it will look even worse....

The silver lining I guess is that he won't give a #### for too long.
Until they realize Pirlo isnt behind him doing all the dirty work....

And the Pogbamentary on Amazon is getting 1/10 reviews.

ok, Bale to LAFC can go one of two ways

1) Bale gets a ton of playing time, has full confidence and form going into the WC

2) A young Concacaf player looking to make a name for himself by getting stuck in on Bale butchers him and hurts him.

I think when you couple in the travel, and the turf to number 2, there is a chance this move hurts Wales more than it helps them.

Thoughts?
I actually think Bale will pick and choose the games he plays in and gets just enough of a run to be ready for the WC.  I believe the WC starts just as MLS' season ends, correct?

But 2 could happen just as well.

if LA make the playoff and make a run, yeah. and they will/should.

and 2 absolutely should happen. dude is using the league of his enemy to further himself and his home nation. if I'm a young buck looking to make a name for myself, I'd bring Christo out of retirement.

Gianluca Busio update: I'm told numerous clubs — including Sassuolo, Vitesse, Parma, Empoli & more —have had talks for a Busio loan. Ajax even made an inquiry (probably unlikely). A new contract to stay at Venezia is possible, too. Still early.

Just a reminder, Venezia got relegated to Serie B last year.  This is why there's movement rumored and possibly assumed as he showed enough class in Serie A to show he's better than a Serie B player (even tho he was unsuccessful in helping them avoid the drop).

Hull City chairman Tan Kesler, to @BBCSport, says the club have agreed a transfer fee to sign USMNT forward Haji Wright, but are still working on personal terms. "So many clubs are chasing him ... I’m talking about Champions League level clubs but he believes in our project."

The Miazga to Cincy rumors continue to float around.
They certainly need the back line help. Cameron is getting slower by the minute.

also fits in the mold of grabbing players with USMNT connections, no matter how far removed they are (Stanko, Gyau). I remember the Cyclones (hockey) doing that with a former Olympic goalie way back in the day so maybe it’s just a Cincy thing to try to generate buzz for a young franchise.

I was just checking out the stats of this game.

DR took only 7 shots the entire game.  All 7 were on goal and they scored 5.

I don't think I have ever seen so many goals on so few attempts before.

Steffen likely to go out on loan according to the Athletic.

Have to think we’d all prefer he goes somewhere and plays regularly:

Manchester City’s Zack Steffen is likely to head out on loan during this transfer window, The Athletic understands.

It’s believed that the idea of sale has not been ruled out, but City are exploring a loan in order to get Steffen more consistent first-team minutes to aid his development.

Steffen has spent the past two seasons as an understudy to first-choice goalkeeper Ederson, making just one Premier League appearance in each campaign.

It is thought that all parties feel a new challenge is needed for Steffen, whose last appearance for City in April’s FA Cup semi-final defeat by Liverpool. His error in that match allowed Sadio Mane to score Liverpool’s second goal in their 3-2 win.

The 27-year-old previously spent the 2019-20 season on loan from City at Bundesliga side Fortuna Dusseldorf, where a back injury curtailed what had been a promising campaign.

Steffen made his international debut for the USMNT in 2018 and has since made 29 appearances for the side.

Ahead of this winter’s World Cup, Steffen faces stern competition from new Arsenal signing Matt Turner for the No 1 spot in Gregg Berhalter’s team. Over the past year, Turner has started 17 games for the US, while Steffen has started six.

In his two seasons since returning to City, Steffen has made 21 appearances, 16 of which have been in domestic competitions.

He previously played for Columbus Crew in MLS.

That's s crazy. I watched the highlights and those came across more even...obviously. Some nice and weird goals in that one.

I watched Mex over PR highlights too. One way traffic, although PR had a couple of really clear, high value goal scoring ops that should have been put away (with how profligate the US has been, I doubt they'd have finished them either)

A little more info on Busio, he has a release clause for a free loan due to Venezia's relegation.  Twitter.  Venezia is also trying to get him to sign a new contract.  Unclear if that contract would keep him on the team in Serie B or just retain control for longer while on loan next year.

Sources: USMNT's Gianluca Busio has a relegation release clause in his Venezia contract in which he can leave on a free loan this summer. Interest from Italy, Spain, Germany & elsewhere.

Busio, turns 20 this week, made 29 Serie A apps this season.
