I initially felt this way, but it does seem that virtually all the players want him back. That has to mean something.

My biggest issue with him coming back now is all the time wasted and lost to come to that decision.

I am 99% sure if the Reyna debacle did not occur, he was going to be re-hired in December
 
GGG gets one step closer. This is Jesse's agent. It is starting to feel like the decision has been made to rehire GGG based on the last couple of days.

Jesse Marsch will not be the next #USMNT manager.
 
I hope Flo's goals in Ligue 1 translate as well as Jonathan David's have to Concacaf.

David just notched his 25th in just 41 international matches.

As a comparison, our best scorer in Pulisic has 23 in 58 matches.

I have a bad feeling that even if they have told him he is the next coach, that they won't make an announcement until after the Gold Cup, wasting even more time in the vein attempt to make the fans believe they turned over every rock before rehiring him.

I really hope I am wrong here and that if they have made the decision, they will announce it.
 
I'm ok with it not being Marsch, only because if he WAS the guy then he should've/could've been hired two months ago.

I'm not ok with it being GGG again for several reasons.... One, why didn't we rehire him in January? The Gio thing? That's still there. The situation hasn't changed. We just have been coachless for 6+ months instead. If he was going to get rehired anyway, he should've spent the last 6 months involved.

Two, he got outcoached... badly, against the Netherlands. You can cry about how much better they are then us all you want, but they scored all 3 of their goals by exploiting the same hole in our defense. The one that their top level coach discovered while watching game film on us. THAT is the type of coach we need.

Three, this means we're still stuck with the 90s ACC/UNC brain trust that has always been in control in some way of this team. I want so badly for us to explore a world without that connection, but apparently it's just impossible.

the reason he was not hired December was due to the domestic abuse allegations. It took them forever to conclude the investigation and clear him and in the mean time, the people responsible for hiring the next coach (Stewart and McBride) both left US Soccer. Everything was in limbo until they hired a new Sporting Director.

I really don't agree with either of those statements.

Berhalter won a gold cup and reached the R16. Every single USMNT coach we've had this century can make the same claim.

Also, it would take some convincing for me to agree its the best when adjusted for age/experience. Most talented - maybe. I think there is a lot of projection in the "best."
 
It's very hard for me to buy into the idea that the 2022 cycle had the "most talented American team ever" when we spent pretty much the entire cycle praying we could pull an international caliber striker out of the couch cushions. Development can move fast, and Pepi might mean we now have two international caliber strikers, but not for most of the last cycle. We also had, for us, serious questions at goalkeeper. Turner ended up being more than fine at the World Cup, but it took a lot of faith in an inexperienced MLS keeper for much of the cycle.

There is some recency bias in this of course which makes your statement true but there were periods in the 2022 cycle, when almost everything was clicking at club level for our core players.

Pulisic was a major piece of one of the best teams in the world. Weston was playing well at Juve. Dest was getting good minutes at Barca. Reyna was scoring ridiculous goals for his age, breaking various Bundesliga records a long he way. Adams was a mainstay at RBL, Weah seemed all but destined to make the leap at Lille, Musah broke into Valencia's starting lineup at 18.... The hype at the time was not made up, it came from players performing really well at club level.

It all took a turn for the worse when Pulisic started off the FA Cup final like a house of fire, got hurt and things seemed to trend slowly downwards for so many of our players culminating in this mess of a club season.

Ironically it was less favored players like Turner, Ream, Jedi, Miles who developed the most in that time frame while most of the top core players (not Adams) all saw their club performance take a nose dive

The only player I am a little concerned with is Dest as it has been forever since he played a minute of competitive soccer. The guy is such a Jekyll and Hyde player though we could get either extreme tonight. There should be enough offensive talent on the field that needing Dest to help generate offense should be alleviated, I hope, allowing him to concentrate on defending first.

Can they make the Gold Cup claim with a "B" team roster?
 
Curious to see how tight we are defensively as the game goes on. Swapping Reyna in for Adams leaves us silky and skilled going forward, but what do we give up the other way?
 
Seems like Mexico is sort of in transition. They are starting a bunch of guys im not really familiar with. Is this their full A team at this point?
 
CP has just absolutely demolished his guy three times now. Mexico is gonna have to get some help for the defender -- he can't handle that first step.
