US Men's National Team (9 Viewers)

He was not in an academy at 13 and turned pro at 18. He went the old fashioned college route. He was 23 before he played his first pro game. So even though he is old, he does not have the miles on him most would have at his age.
So he probably knows how to throw a baseball and football...
that is probably more related to general athleticism than just focusing on soccer only. Watch Pulisic play other sports, he is a complete natural because of his athletic ability and no one focused on one sport more than Pulisic.

Miles though may be the best player in another sport in our program. Here is a quote from his old coach...it helps us understand why Miles is our best 1 v 1 defender we may have ever had.

=================

“I think [Atlanta Hawks guard] Trae Young would have a hard time scoring on him,” said his basketball coach at Arlington High School, John Bowler. “Miles’ athletic IQ is off the charts. The way he saw the floor, the way he changed speeds to fool defenders, the way he timed his jumps for rebounds or jumping passing lanes. He was not only the most athletic player on the court, but he was also the smartest. I believe Miles would’ve been a D1 hoops player if that was his No. 1 sport.”

So I saw elsewhere - and may be speculation but it's believable - that we signed BJ through the Gold Cup before we had a coach and so we are not officially signing Berhalter til after that so we don't spend money on a buyout for the interim for the interim. USSF ladies and gents.

debacle may be the rallying cry for this cycle

:lmao:

To continue on what @prefontaine was talking about, poor BJ was asked directly by a reporter why GGG was not going to manage in the Gold Cup and BJ's answer was "he has more important things to do"

Lets break that down. The National Team manager has more important things to do than manage the national team..............

I mean the lies don't even make sense. :lmao:

We are blessed here. We can have varying opinions and still discuss and learn. But look at what some poor fans have to deal with on twitter if they don't have another outlet like we do....

“USMNT Twitter” is a deeply ****ed up, toxic place these days. There’s always room for dissenting viewpoints and healthy discussion - but my mentions, right now, are an absolute dumpster fire of borderline radicalized nonsense, the sort of **** that drowns reasonable voices out.

"QSMNT" (from the same Maurer thread). I am keeping it.

It's pretty funny to hear that journos who also cover NCAA football are like, "yeah, USMNT Twitter is the worst."

======

Following its 2022/23 Concacaf Nations League Semifinal match versus Mexico on June 15, 2023, the US Soccer Federation submitted to Concacaf a protest for the direct red card issued to Weston McKennie.

In line with the Confederation’s direct red card appeals system, a three-member Concacaf Independent Review Panel was appointed and considered the matter.

After a thorough review, including consideration of the video of the on-field decision and evidence presented by the US Soccer Federation, the Concacaf Independent Review Panel has decided to uphold the on-field decision of a direct red card. The player in question must serve an automatic one-match suspension.

The decision rendered by the three-member Concacaf Independent Panel is final and is not subject to further appeal.

Most high schools have a different coach for the JV team.

This is a worse loss than either Dest or Weston given the opponent in the final

Miles Robinson OUT with injury in tomorrow nights nations league final vs Canada
So I guess we go with Walker for the experience. I'm not too keen on him but I think this will be Scally's first ever start as a right back and 2nd overall, so it's wise to put an experienced guy next to him. The only other option is Trusty and sliding Richards to RCB. That is more appealing to me because Richards' pace can help Scally out. But that would be a pretty green backline.

I imagine we'll go with pretty much the same set up with LDT in for McKennie. I don't really see Johnny as a starter option based on prior play but I know a lot of people are high on him.

The US will be missing 5 normal starters today: Adams, Ream, Weston, Dest and Miles. We almost never have a full team but this will be an unusually big test of the depth since 3 of the 5 are pure defensive players and the other two also have a lot of defensive responsibilities.

I think we have to hope that the US will be in the front foot offensively and score an early goal. That will open up the Canadian defense as they chase, instead of bunker + counter.

A goal inside 20 minutes would be a great way to pop your cherry, Balo.

But Miles actually played high school basketball... I was thinking about the guys that started at an academy at like age 12.

In any case, all these guys are superb athletes that could easily pick up other sports and be "good" at them quickly.

Miles is no doubt a super athletic guy.

right, that is why I mentioned Pulisic.

I only mentioned Miles as I was thinking who may have been the best player in another sport on the team as an aside.

I thought Weah's and Pulisic's statements about GGG carried a lot of weight.

But I don't know what the reporters are thinking by asking all the other players their opinion of GGG is going to accomplish, now that he is hired? Are they expecting a player to slip up and say something stupid like "he is crap and never should have been rehired" I would hope no player is going to dig their own grave like that....

So...

--Pulisic -- Balogon -- Weah
----------------Reyna
--------El Dielti---Musah
Robinson Richards Walker Scally

This is where the US has gotten better IMO. Missing five guys and we're still rolling out a really good lineup.

I mean... our replacement players are playing at Celta Vigo, playing at Crystal Palace, top defender in MLS and playing at B Moench.

I do wish someone would ask Reyna exactly what Berhalter said to him.
I think they did...let me see if I can find it..........This is from Gio

==================

November 2022According to Gio, Berhalter told him prior to the USMNT’s Nov. 21 opener “that my role at the tournament would be very limited.” Neither Berhalter nor Gio has gone into detail on what, exactly, that conversation entailed.

This is what I'm really asking for. The "exactly" part. I'd like to know what Berhalter said verbatim.

"You won't have a role at the World Cup" is one extreme and I'd change my mind about how things played out, at least a little bit. "I'm starting Weah and McKennie and you'll be a sub" is another extreme and I'd expect the Berhalter haters would change their minds.

I think what I posted is as close as you are ever going to get, especially with time passing now. And the words Gio posted sounds correct to me. It sounds like something GGG may have told him and it sounds like something that may have caused an immature kid to act like Gio did.

I don't normally agree with Herc but I thought he made an interesting point yesterday.

He said he does not really care what the reasoning is that US Soccer/GGG want him to start after the Gold Cup, but what he does not understand, and that no one can get a real answer to, is why did they announce when they did? Who cares about the leaks. The best reporters can do is say "from sources". Until either GGG or US Soccer announce anything, nothing is official.

It seems to me they could have let the rumors continue and then announce GGG officially after the Gold Cup and not had to do the stupid "he has better things to do than coach the Gold Cup" dance.

If there is a silver lining, it's that millions of fans hate Berhalter as much as I do.

While I remain ambivalent about GGG, I think there is something telling in that other coaches, his players, most of the knowledgeable press seem to support GGG while it is mostly fans who hate him.

I don't know which side is right or wrong but I certainly know which side is significantly more educated on the sport.

I think its a very small but vocal minority of online warriors who claim to "hate" Berhalter. Listening to a couple USMNT podcasts this week there's a pretty consistent reaction - no one loves it, no one is excited with Berhalter coming back, but at the same time no one is able to name a single coach who was available, willing, and better than Berhalter. He's the safe pick, if somewhat disappointing and underwhelming, but its not like they chose him over Pep Guardiola.

There are a ton of good seats still available at Soldier Field for the 6/24 Gold Cup game against Jamaica. I would love to go but have to sell my tickets due to an unavoidable conflict (prior plans with my wife.) My son was going to go with a buddy but just texted me that he can't make it and I've just learned the secondary sale market for this game is pretty ugly for sellers, great for buyers. Normally I would expect it to be easy to dump these for a Gold Cup game in a big city but that is not the case for this game.

Sargent as a 3rd #9, a lead-protecting, D and hustle guy, makes a lot of sense. He brings something the rest of the pool doesn't and I bet he gets called ahead of the "other" #9s (Jesus, Haji, Pefok, etc).

Hopefully a couple guys force their way into this conversation, but boy do spots look tight for 2026 already...

Balogon, Pepi, Sargent(?)
Pulisic, Aaronson(?)
Weah, (?)
Reyna, McKennie
Musah, LDLT
Adams, (?)
Robinson, (?)
Dest, Scally
Richards, Ream(?)
Miles, Zimmerman
Turner, Slolina, (?)

Massive game for Scally because he will be match up with Davies if Davies plays.

There was some talk that Davies took a knock so we need to see if he starts,....

I think we can get away with only 2 #9's when restricted to a 23 man roster. We have other players who can play that role (or a false 9) if an emergency. We may need the depth else where...
