US Open Pool (1 Viewer)

I am entering a pool. Pick 4 guys. Lowest score wins. All must make the cut to win. Tie Breaker is combined score of all 4 to par.

15-20 entries.

I am thinking:

Spieth

Rose

Rory

DJ

Thoughts?

That's a mighty thin limb you are out on.

Just any 4 guys? Rory and Spieth are going to be on 95% of the entries and the other 2 slots will be favorites. I'd go Rory-Spieth-Fowler-Matsuyama

It's a small pool. Others might have the same foursome so it will come down to a tiebreaker.

A lot will slot Phil in there. Fowler too.

Mickelson seems to be the most popular pick among the "experts." I can't say that I disagree, given his track record (6-time U.S Open runner-up). More importantly, it sounds like he's excited about the course, while a lot of others are already complaining, making excuses, etc. That's half the battle, in my opinion (not letting a course like this one get the better of your mentally).

I'd probably go Spieth, McIlroy, Mickelson, and pick your poison for #4.... Matsuyama has the best overall stats, in terms of driving, scrambling, and iron play. Rose has won big tournaments, but not necessarily on this type of course. Same with Fowler (and he's come close on links courses as well).

Guys like DJ and Watson surely have a good chance as well, but something tells me that this will be more about creativity and mastering the short game, than it will be about bombing drives. That (short game) is not necessarily the strength of either of those guys, although it sounds like Bubba has spent a LOT of time at the course, preparing for this week. Still, while the course is long, it will also be fast and firm, which negates some of the need for length off the tee. Accuracy (and again, creativity/precision around the greens) will prove to be more important than length, in my opinion.

In your format (where everyone must make the cut for you to win), I think it makes sense to play it safe. There's no salary cap, so to speak, so there's really no need to pick any longshots, or take chances on a surprise pick. Worst case, you have the same lineup as somebody else (and go to a tie-breaker if you win). But, that's better than picking a long-shot who misses the cut.

Personally, I'm going to make a short list of 15-20 guys tonight, and see which of those have had the most success over the past 5 years or so... In a combination of the US Opens and Open Championships (British). Guys who consistently finish well (or at least make the cut) in those tournaments should be the safe bets to do so in this one. That's not a failsafe theory by any means, and I've already got my picks in mind (we pick six in my league), but if something stands out, I may change it slightly.

Bubba's game is all about creativity...what are you talking about?

I agree. He's also known for his length. All I was saying is that creativity and accuracy will be more important than length this week (just my opinion). In other words, I've heard comments that the big hitters will have a huge advantage this week, because the course is so long. I don't think that's necessarily going to be the case. Accuracy, short game, and creativity will be more important than who hits it the farthest (again, my opinion).

None of that means that Bubba can't win it. But, if he does, it will be because he's able to control his shots the way he wants/likes to, as well as make some putts, not because he can hit it a mile.
