Thought this was pretty cool. I hadn't seen this yet...should be a sick team.

http://www.insidehoops.com/usa-2006-08-030506.shtml

Carmelo Anthony

Gilbert Arenas

Shane Battier

Chauncey Billups

Chris Bosh

Bruce Bowen

Elton Brand

Kobe Bryant

Dwight Howard

LeBron James

Antawn Jamison

Joe Johnson

Shawn Marion

Brad Miller

Adam Morrison

Lamar Odom

Chris Paul

Paul Pierce

J.J. Redick

Michael Redd

Luke Ridnour

Amare Stoudemire

Dwyane Wade

Head Coach: Mike Krzyzewski

Assistant Coach: Jim Boeheim

Assistant Coach: Mike D'Antoni

Assistant Coach: Nate McMillan

Who do you guys think will be the starters? I'm thinking the 5 bolded players are the 5 best players, but probably wouldn't be able to all start, not a true PG there. Not sure if Amare will be 100 percent either. Very dissapointed Iverson wasn't put on the team though...I mean Ridnour over Iverson is a joke.

This isn't the official roster though right? I'm pretty sure this is the list of people who are trying out to make the final team.

Or am I mistaken?

They should just send the current NBA champs anytime we need a crew and throw mad bonuses their way.

Yeah after actually reading the article I think you're right. Were there this many players on the USA team that got a silver or bronze last Olympics? It sure didn't seem like it.

I'd like to know where:

Tracy McGrady

Shaq

Tim Duncan

Allen Iverson

Steve Nash

Edit to add: Ben Watson!

are on that list.

I understand that we need to include some of the youth, but really we were embarrassed last time around. We really need to show up this time with our best players and utterly decimate the competition to make up for:

US sucking in BBall last time

US sucking in World Baseball Classic

US sucking at the World Cup

There won't be that many people on the final roster. They'll take 12-14.

A bunch of them said no to an invite(McGrady and Shaq I believe, not sure about Duncan). Iverson wasn't invited which was shocking. Nash is from Canada.

I know Iverson really wanted on but they snubbed him, Tmac has a bad back, i'm fairly sure Shaq didn't want to play, i'm not even sure Nash can play on the team being Canadian and all, and most likely Duncan didnt wanna play because i'm sure he was extended an invite.

taking 40 shots and hitting 10 for his 20+ every nite is not playing like worth a damn.

duncan refuses to play again. He feels the FIBA refs screwed him over in Athens, and he has a legitimate argument. he has gone on record saying that he is done with international ball.

If im taking 12 off that list(not in any specific order)

Wade

Kobe

Lebron

Bosh

Howard

Amare(if healthy)

Brand

Paul

Arenas

Billups

Marion

Redd

but its prettty much a toss up for the last 4 or 5 spots.

Or could it be that he kept the rest of the team from playing? This is an honest question. I didn't witness what he did, but I know statistically speaking that "ball hogs" usually put up pretty good stats despite not playing a game conducive to their team winning.

nash - canadian?

& that current nba champs idea wont work because if a team like the spurs win you have duncan that wont play, parker from france , ginobli from ? , etc... same problem with dallas. Heat it might work though and maybe pistons.

this can only lead to good things, if true.

I'd take a good college team over these guys.

A group that could play together as a team, hit the mid-range jumper, play some defense. An all-star team isn't really a team.

Isn't that what the US used to do?
Back when we used to win, yes. ;) ETA Actually it was college players from different teams. An all-star team, so to speak. But without the multi-million dollar egos.

I can't imagine Stoudemire being fit by the tournament. It's a good lineup, but lacking a true Center and pure shooters. Brad Miller has some issues but he fills both needs.

Someone like Ben Gordon, Raja Bell or Rip Hamilton would be a good fit, but it's hard to see any of them bumping Wade or Bryant.

 :lmao: And what college team would beat a starting 5 of Wade, Lebron, Kobe, Brand and Howard?

Assuming 14 players on a roster, this would be my 2006 team for the FIBA Championships -- it would change for 2008, probably would add Amare in. I can't imagine the Suns want him playing this Summer anyways. Assuming he returns to full health, he'd be a lock for 08.Arenas is a great player, but with Kobe, Wade and Redd there's no reason to have him on the team. Bowen would be nice too, but Kobe is a good enough lock-down 2 guard to make Bowen's limited skill-set rather useless here.

Billups, Paul make the PGs, with Wade in a pinch if necessary.

Wade, Kobe, Redd the SGs.

Howard and Miller are the centers.

Brand, Bosh, Odom at the 4.

Then Lebron, Marion, Pierce at the 3. Battier can play all over the court, and would likely be the 12th man anyways.

This year I'd start games with:

Billups, Kobe/Wade, Howard, Brand, Lebron, with the idea that Paul is running the point in 08.

Man is that team sick.

No college team could hang with the Euro teams anymore. This isn't 1988.

So to combat that we should send over Boston College(picking a random good college team) instead of team mentioned(the best players in the U.S.)?

You really think a team like the Florida Gators (defending champs, bring most players back) would be better suited to beat good quality euro teams, rather than a squad loaded with Wade, Lebron, Kobe, Paul and Howard?Come on :fishing:

I honestly don't think that makes a good team. I'm sure you could get a better starting five than those guys. Who's sharing the ball, seeing the floor, taking assists instead of points, playing good defense? You have the entire NBA to choose from, you can pick a better TEAM than that.

This has to be fishing. Kobe and Billups can't defend? Wade can't hit a mid-range j?Having a good team concept relies on getting guys that will buy in and a coach that can earn their respect. While I'm not a big fan of some of K's coaching tactics (7 deep rotations that burn out the starters, defending too close to the opposing player), I would hope that he's going to get everyone to play solid team basketball.

I don't see anyone on that roster that's going to be a problem in terms of selfishness. People forget that Kobe was committed to Duke and says he regrets playing college ball, so him and K should be fine.

Here's my starting five...

LeBron James

Dwayne Wade

Kobe Bryant

Elton Brand

Tim Duncan(he'll be back)

Bryant can guard any 3 in international play and and Brand can run with the 4's and is an excellent passer.

Lebron's game isn't very well suited for international play so if he struggles I would like to see Paul get some minutes...that boy can shoot, but is an even better distributor, which is what you need with Wade/Bryant at the 2/3.

Half of this roster is full of NBA mentality scorers...the type of player that kills your international squad...see Carmelo Anthony.

I cannot wait for Kobe,Lebron and Wade to play together. If everyone else lets these guys lead the team, and play second fiddle a gold medal is a shoe in.

Anyone know when they will be in Vegas this summer? That might be an excuse to get out there.

Edit: my 12 would be

PG-Wade, Paul, Arenas

SG-Kobe, Redd

SF-Lebron, Odom, Marion

PF-Brand, Bosh

C- Amare, Howard

That's not the roster though, just the pool to pick from for 06 and 08.I really doubt Carmelo makes it.
