Vegas (7 Viewers)

Going to Vegas in early March to see a couple of friends from the east coast. They're staying at Caesars, ~ $175 a night. Right across the street, Imperial Palace is $67 a night.

Is IP really that bad?
It's ok but the location is great. I spend most of the time at the Hilton sports book or down the street at one of the piano bars with good beer prices anyway. Caesars is nice, but you can stay at the IP and walk a few blocks to Caesars and drop the $100 a night you save at the craps table. Also the Flamingo is double the cost of the IP and not twice as good IMO.
Yeah, it's not that bad, if you want to save a buck or two. Good location actually, and if you're buddies are at Caesar's, you're as close as you can get. Plus, O'Shea's is right there, which is genius. And how much time do you really spend in the room?Back in the day, IP used to have hot waitresses but it's been quite awhile since I've been there...
Some of the waitresses are still hot IMO. I'm going for business in April and we have a per diem cap and staying at the IP ends up meaning I'll pocket an extra $30 or $40 a night at minimum so I don't mind. Rooms are clean (although I wouldn't walk barefoot on the carpet but I can say that about 95 percent of hotels) and it's close to everything. My conference is at the Hilton and I go to two 1.5 hour seminars and spend the rest of the time waiting for the suckers I go with who actually go to every single optional seminar....in the sports book betting NHL playoff games, horses, and some baseball. IP sportsbook is horrible but I'll tell you that if you go there you will see what sports gambling junkies gone bad look like. There are these three guys in there every night who look like they are an over/under away from being homeless. Good stuff. I do like the bar they have in the sportsbook there though, lots of TVs, cheap imports, and a bunch of trashy chicks looking to score.

If I ever go on vacation to Vegas, I'd use my reward points and stay somewhere nice where I had a pool, nice gambling rooms, good sports book etc. I think I'd probably stay at Caesars because outside the Hilton I think their sports book is the best. I could get a discount and stay at the Hilton for my trip but it's too far from the strip. I like to get smashed and barely make it back to my room and I don't like being nailed down to one place.

Good thread though, I'll have to try some of these food places.
It's been maybe ten years, but I know what you're talking about with their sportsbook -- lol @ one o/u away...Do they still have that old mechanical horse racing machine in there. That thing was classic. I remember betting against each other, wasted, and we got into it pretty deep. Good times. I also remember a waitress from Columbia I fell in love with...

My favorite place to stay in Vegas is the Desert Rose Resort.

It's next to Hooters, a short walk from MGM Grand and the monorail.

There's no casino in the place, but you get a one or two bedroom apartment with a full kitchen, large living room and dining area.

They have free breakfast and happy hour as well - nothing great, but it is free...

I've stayed there on my last three visits and have booked a room there for April.

Anybody ever stay at the Polo Towers?

A buddy has a great deal on this place, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. It has no casino, which isn't a huge deal really, because we probably wouldn't gamble much there anyway...besides, it's in the heart of the strip (next to MGM, towards Bally's). Rooms are supposed to be pretty nice and bigger than most. Pool doesn't sound that great, though...

Seems like a lot of timesharers, so not many girls? Although some of the reviews I've read indicate "good for singles" or whatever they say, but I doubt that.

Also, wandering where to watch the big game...thinking Mandalay. Caesar's?
If you can manage to get into the Sportsbook at the Palazzo More like a giant living room then a Sportsbook. It's not ideal for multiple games but would be great for the SB.
Good info, thanks. Hard Rock's too small. Mandalay might be too massive, come to think about it. I want the best viewing spot to watch every play...
Negative on Polo Towers. Had an outbreak of Legionnaires Disease not long ago. No joke. Referred to round here as Polio Towers.Sportsbook at Palazzo is a great call. Used to be 40/40 club, and is a real great place to watch the game.

This sounds a lot like the Polo Towers, actually. Big rooms, condo-style, no casino, great location...a nice place to put your head down and recharge. My buddy couldn't refund/change the room so I'll report back about the PTs. I do see that there are liquor stores nearby so stocking up will be easy.

Considering the UFC fight on Saturday -- St. Pierre vs. Penn -- at the MGM.

Hope you asked for/got a discount on your room -- everybody is dealing nowadays.

Jesus Christ. I just found out we can't change it (post above). What does that mean exactly? A quick check shows it happened last year...

ETA, when did Palazzo change from 40/40. A buddy said he didn't like the sportsbook there, and I'm thinking he went to a different, older one.

Yeah, it was a while ago, have a buddy that works the front desk. It has been controlled etc., but still......You are right, the sportsbook moved, before it was an afterthought, this weird little spot, downstairs from the lobby. 40/40 club was further down the hall from the sportsbook. It's a huge place, loungy, with this stadium-type seating in the main part of the club. Layout-wise, there's not a cooler sportsbook in town.

yeah, it's not an old-school Sportsbook, it's a big party. The center section was for hotel guests only. I guess you can grease someone but we were staying there and got a spot. Drinks and food are pricey and I would suggest going there a day or two before and find out how to reserve a booth. They even have outside seating. We went on a regular season Sunday and could only see one game from big screen in the center section. No problem for the Bowl though!

I don't get the "but still" part. If it's over, and they're open, then there's no danger to public health, obviously. It's just the stigma, no?

Yes. my buddy said the rooms are very decent.

Does the MGM signature have a different pool scene then the main MGM? How is it? Does it share the same pools as the Lofts which go for 4 digits a night?

I will be up there this weekend. Anyone know where to get great hotel deals? I won't be doing much gambling but would like a place with a decent room for value.

Also, for those looking to watch the game if you're cheap and want free drinks I'd say the Rio is your best bet. I love watching games there.

THats easy. Inclined to behave in an actively hostile fashion. Assertive, bold, and energetic. Fast growing; tending to spread quickly and invade. BTW thanks for the Vegas invite I was going to go to Wild Wings sat...

you do all that by walking? any actual articulable facts beyond cute descriptions? :popcorn:As for BWW you said you may be going to a buddy's who was getting the fight. Had I'd known you were actually gonna make an appearance I'd made myself unavailable. I'll let you know if this girl bails but otherwise i'm up for going tomorrow if you want - anything good on?

Woz, take 20 minutes, go to each of the big hotels and put in the dates - that is your best bet. I don't know how booked Vegas will be this weekend it being the Super Bowl and all, but I think you should still find rooms for under $100 a night. A friend went last weekend and she paid $99 a night at the Palms which is a good deal.

I booked a 2,200 square foot 2 bedroom suite at the Platinum for the first weekend of March madness (Thur - Sun for $850). It is 1 block behind Bally's/Paris and within walking distance of the Hard Rock.

I just got back from 3 nights in Vegas.

It was dead on the strip--Bellagio, MGM, Caesars, PH, etc. All dead.

There was no line at the airport security screening leaving Vegas--yeah, the one you normally get stuck at for 45 minutes--nothing. I know I was there off peak time of week, time of year, etc...but it was a ghost town.

All the casino employees and bartenders I spoke with were crying in my beer hoping the SB would bring crowds.

Just got an email from Travelzoo about the Monte Carlo hotel for stays during Nascar weekend the end of Feb, and March madness weekends from 49.00

I have not looked real close as I am going in May, but wanted to pass this along as I know there are lots that like to go during these times.

Here is the link:

Agreed that is good ####, I think less so for Vegas. I have booked cheaper fares through travelocity/expdia etc... but then when you try to get rooms comped the casinos are less likely to do it since you did not book directly through the hotel (either that or this was a song and dance they gave me). The signature is $60 cheaper through Orbitz then directly through MGM but I would rather book through MGM based on my experience above. Still a good site to get ball park prices on hotels in Vegas to narrow your search or for travel to other locations, or to Vegas if you never get comps.

That was one of the "higher" end hotels I saw on the cheap when perusing the results on travelaxe for March Madness opening weekend.

Hope you asked for/got a discount on your room -- everybody is dealing nowadays.
any place for deals at these particular places?
You can try/call. I would've done Mandalay but my buddy couldn't cancel. That was the best bang for our buck, imo. If you want the best deal, it was probably Hooters. Only like 57 bones and pretty good location.Forget about the fight. $800, or thereabouts...

Anybody ever stay at the Polo Towers? :bowtie:

I don't get the "but still" part. If it's over, and they're open, then there's no danger to public health, obviously. It's just the stigma, no?
A little legionnaire's disease never hurt anyone...

What happens when you book a reservation at a hotel 3 months in advance, check back in a month and see that all of their rates have gone down? Do you:

* Call up and get the better rates?

* Cancel your reservation and rebook?

This is for MGM Signature, looks like their rates went down $30 a night across the board (plus a little more for their skylofts).

I just called them up, they were able to switch it to the lower rates

Good info here. Instead of staying at the IP I think I'm gonna try the MGM Grand this year because its under my per diem at this rate. Looks like I can get a West Wing King Room...How is the MGM Grand in general? Any drawbacks? I can stay at Excalibur (superior), New York/New York (park Ave Deluxe), or the Luxor (tower deluxe) instead but the Grand looks like the best of those. Thoughts?

The West Wing location might be good, but the rooms in the West Wing completely suck! We stayed at the MGM for the fights on SB weekend. They didn't have a room ready in the main tower, so they gave us a room in the West Wing. It was absolutely horrible! If felt like we were on a cruise ship. The halls were small, it felt like a hotel built in 1960, and we had one small window in our room. We immediately called the front desk and changed back to the main tower. The West Wing at MGM is no better than the other hotels you listed. In fact, I think I'd rather be at all the other hotels instead of the MGM West Wing. And overall, I didn't like the vibe at the MGM. It is just a HUGE place with no personality.

Maybe I got lucky but my room at the West Wing was fine, I think it was even a suite of sorts, I always do the $20 trick at the counter for a free upgrade.

Also I got a friend looking at airfare right now for next month. I got 2 really good time slots for in and out of NYC area both non-stops for $349 incl. tax. To get the same flights I got today you need to pay about $1200 RT.
