Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (12 Viewers)

I've been playing the Destiny beta quite a bit in the last few days. At first I was pretty stoked, but my excitement has dwindled a lot as I played it more. The single player mode is OK, but very repetitive and somewhat dull. You have the same dumb AI over and over again, spawning in the same spots every time. All you do is plink away at their shields/health to kill them. It's kind of boring. The PvP crucible...is just ok. It's not the kind of multiplayer i see myself coming back to.

I ended up canceling my pre-order yesterday. Though I may reconsider if it turns out to be bigger and better than it seems at this time.
Opposite here. I haven't played PvP much at all, but I'm enjoying the PvE stuff. I've played the strike missing 7-8 times and haven't gotten tired of it at all. It's kind of a grind when you're on a team that doesn't know what it's doing, but now that I'm geared up enough to play it on hard, I'm always teamed up with guys who know how to run through it efficiently. It's like we're in a race to rack up kills.
I'm on the fence myself but I'll probably just switch my digital guardian edition of the preorder to the regular game at Best Buy. I have Gamers Club unlocked so it's just $48 and I'll get a $10 reward certificate back which I'll put toward another game.

The Destiny beta was a let down for me too.

The PvP is broken as is. I'm not going to gripe too much since it's the beta and can still be fixed. Plus, that wasn't really what had me excited for the game.

The "story" aspect is where I actually feel let down. It's a disjointed narrative that the missions only seem to loosely follow. The exact same enemies will continue to spawn in the exact same spot over and over again. Each mission will go back to the same central area then branch off from there. So, other then to level up, there's no point in killing these bad guys. Every mission is basically the same. Kill waves of enemies and a boss type. I know this probably sounds like most games but most games at least have enough of a story that it doesn't feel like I'm just playing a game. Enemies show up for a reason. It should feel natural but Destiny just feel like I'm playing a video game.

The connection issues are pretty annoying but can be fixed. However, no matter what people will lose their connection and then it's seems there is no way to jump back in or have some else jump in for the lost player.

Maybe my expectations were too high. Or maybe this game is just an unrealized or poorly executed game.

This will be my last post harping on Destiny, I promise. It just came out that there is only one area per planet, with seemingly 4 planets. So we've played probably 15-20% of campaign already during the beta. Obviously a great deal was cut out of this game since its E3 2013 reveal where they starred was a fully exploitable open world. It's very disappointing.

I played for a couple hours last night, and I'm not loving it either. One of Halo's calling cards is an immersive single player campaign and Destiny certainly doesn't feel that way. I ended up in one campaign mission with a couple of other players who were just running around picking up collectibles instead of helping progress through the level. And I really didn't like Borderlands, and this is throwing me a Borderlands vibe.

I started off under the presumption that a Bungie game was a day 1 purchase but I'm leaning against it now.

Thanks for the tips. Not overclocking. Will try the airflow suggestions and see if i can check on the fans.
So after cleaning fans and keeping the sides of the case off it looks to me like its the video card. Essentially, the video card fan is only spinning occasionally. It spins for a sec and then quits. If I give it a bump with a pen it will spin for a bit and then quit. So, is this something that is fixable? If not, what would you guys recommend as a upgrade from a Radeon HD 6870? I don't need the best of the best, but might as well upgrade a bit while i am at it. Thanks mucho.

What kind of MOBO do you have? It all depends on that.

Just bought the Corsair Carbide 540 case to transfer my current pc into. It's a pretty cool case.
Looks like a cool idea, splitting the case into 2 chambers. Looks really big, is it really as big as it looks in pics? Also, how much room is there for HDs? Looks like 1x5.25 caddy and an SSD caddy, I assume at least 1 slot of the 5.25 is used for a DVD drive of some variety.

I ask because I really need to consolidate my HDs, I have 2x250GB (had 3, one died), 1x640GB and 1x1TB currently in my PC, I should just get a 3TB and put the others all in an external case or something. Oh, that doesn't count the 120GB and the 240GB SSDs.
I'll update once I migrate it to the new case. It's about 50% wider and 30% shorter than a typical case.

I have never gotten drunk before, so I have no idea what it is like to wake up and have no idea how you got where you are, but I imagine it is similar to how I feel when I look at my Steam library. I see a few games and am like, "How teh frick did THAT get in there?!?"
Wait, wut?
Isn't Mad Cow Mormon?
I remember that too but still needed to post. So Mormons can't do any recreational things beside videogames? I'm asking because I'm legitimately curious, not to be a Richard.
I don't want to speak out of turn, but I believe alcohol is definitely a no no.
True. No alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco, drugs. Never felt deprived at all and can shift all those funds to upgrading my PC. :)
This is where your religion lost its way and became a crazytown cult.

This ticks me off, too. I will bet anything that stuff has been cut from the game to be sold as DLC.

I didn't get around to playing the beta. Thanks for the code I got from a fbg, my girlfriend actual fired it up and played but I was always working or busy. Long story short she can't explain much about the beta besides it's alright. I usually try and figure out the games we can play together through researching but it's tougher with new games, so what I'm asking is how was the co-op? Was the story appealing or atleast entertaining? We enjoy stuff like Borderlands, Gears, Portal, even The new Rayman's(which are damn good underated games). She likes the fable series and enjoys watching stuff like skyrim, so would this appeal at all or did it seem designed towards pvp? We are usually strictly Pvm in this type of game, pvp only for more traditional shooters.

Been kind of hooked on random pc games lately, diablo, starcraft, witcher and some older games. Haven't seen any console games lately that have really got me going. I do miss the xbox fbg hang outs. What are you playing on the PC these days?

I believe Gamestop is offering 50% off The Last of Us Remastered if you trade in your PS3 copy of TLoU this week only. That might be enough for me to take the plunge a second time :bag:

Playing through The Walking Dead season one again.

What an amazing game. Can't wait to play Season two in November (I pre-ordered the physical copy with all the episodes). I also will finally pick up 400 days after my second play through. It's only 5 bucks and is a bridge to season 2.

What version? I played on iOS and completed episode 4 the morning it came out. Episode 4 (season 2) is great. I played each episode in the last week or so so I did not have to wait but had I had to wait... it would have blown me more away.

400 days is alright. No spoilers but you can play in any sequence however if you wanted to play chronologically you'll have to Google it. Might be best to play the first time chronologically which is something I did not do. I was close but had one chapter out of order.

I haven't played much yet but have looked into left4dead and my older diablo 2 love. Beyond that I am afraid to sign up for steam because I know what will happen. Dainty is looking forward to Sims 4.

Does LAST OF US have its own thread? I'll be playing this starting tomorrow.
I don't believe so. I'm looking forward to jumping back into this.

You should try out the multiplayer (after finishing the story -- some of the maps are spoiler-ish). It's different and isn't the sort of thing that everybody is going to like. I tired of it after 3-4 weeks, but strangely I'm now tempted to go right to that before I even touch the SP. It's a breath of fresh air compared to the other cookie-cutter games that are out there.

I'm pretty sure there was. Too bad the search function is broken.

ETA: Corporation hooked it up.

I didn't even realize there was a multiplayer component?? How does that work?
It's 4 vs 4. If you run or fire a non-silenced weapon, you briefly show up on the enemy's radar, so stealth is greatly encouraged. You can also gather supplies to craft nail bombs, molotovs, health kits, etc. on the fly. In one of the game modes, once you die you can't respawn until the next round, which also encourages cautious gameplay.

One thing that made it cool for a guy like me who sucks at shooters, is that you could actually score really well for crafting items and giving them to your teammates, reviving downed teammates, healing people, spotting, etc. In other words, you can do pretty well playing as all-out "support."

I'm reading back through the lackluster reviews on the Destiny beta. Is this because the game itself isn't any good for you guys or is it because you are just burned out on the FPS genre altogether?

I haven't played the beta at all (I've never really gotten into demos), but I also haven't really been sucked into an FPS in a few years... I guess it's a combination of these games getting really stale in design, I'm not competitive against all of the teenagers and semi-employed, and I hate the level grinding. I thought Titanfall did a lot of cool, innovative things, but not enough to sustain my interest for months at a time.

Without a strong single player, it's going to fall into the same category as Titanfall for me, which like you I found to be a good game that had a pretty short run in my playlist.

Just broke down and bought Divinity: Original Sin. It is getting superlative reviews and it has been a long time since I've played a Baldur's Gate type game. Really kind of excited to delve into an RPG again - haven't playing anything like that since the ridiculous number of hours I put into Skyrim.
The game is wonderful, hard, and frustrating all in one. Near-perfect if it weren't for some camera angle issues and a strange inventory system.
Since you are into this, one question that is driving me nuts (simple, I'm sure). I see where you can put the party into different formations, but I can't figure out how to select one guy to be point or have things be done from his point of view, if you know what I mean. With just my two initial folks I can switch their order, but one always seems to be up front. Any hints?
All you need to do to put a char at point is to select his/her portrait.

I have to give a huge thumbs up to this game. I haven't had this much fun wiith an RPG since Skyrim..

If you liked Boulder Gate, buy this game.
Yeah - I don't know how it wasn't working last time around, but fine this time. Thanks!
Are you guys still digging this game? Pretty sure its next on my purchase list..

I think a combination of getting older and a lack of innovation in gaming has made most games lackluster to me. Only the old school difficulty and secretes of Dark Souls keeps me going. I started a new franchise in madden the other day and it dawned on me that I enjoy everything about the except the actual gameplay. I wouldn't touch a FPS with a ten foot pole.

Segway... I'm contemplating ending my Madden prohibition this year, but will only do so if the franchise mode is decent. How was it last year on the new gen platforms?

I'm normally a multiplayer centric kind of guy, but Titanfall fell out of favor with me quickly as well.

Regarding Destiny, I think that it tries to do a lot of things - but none of them particularly well. The FPS aspect of it included.

Madden has been taking steps backwards ever since 2010, which I believe was the best, most balanced Madden ever.

I did not play the next gen madden but read it wasn't that much of a step up from the current gen consoles. This upcoming madden should be better but expect to still have some growing pains.

2010 franchise was awful. Cant vouch for gameplay as its been pretty bleh for awhile but 2010 franchise was a joke.

Connected Franchise mode on M25 was the best franchise mode on Madden since Madden 2005. It's been that long since I had an immersive franchise on Madden.

I am in year 4 of my Dolphins franchise on M25 (PS3) and am really loving this version of the game. I am skipping M15 on PS3. No need to get another till I go next gen (PS4) in a few years.

@ Mario Kart

PS3 version of The Walking Dead. Masterpiece of story telling video games. Right there with The Last of Us and The Dead Space series as best horror game ever.

Really looking forward to Season 2

Madden 25 was solid. I'd even go as far as to say better than NFL 2K5. But since people are biased against EA, I assume those that still hate it didn't even try to play it.

In many ways it is better than NFL 2K5. Passing is far better, and the running game feels great. Overall yeah it is better. NFL 2K5's presentation though still is supreme. 2K5 had a great dynamic and working penalty system as well as replay working properly. And OL/DL interaction was better and tackle animations incredibly were better on a 10 year old game.

I love Madden 25's branching draft story lines, draft presentation and Owner mode and moving teams made it's return. It's a great game IMO.

Overall M25 was the best NFL game I have ever played thus far top to bottom (I actually preferred Madden 2005 over NFL 2K5 in the grand scheme). And NCAA 14 quite frankly is the best console football game of all time thus far. Addicting!!!! Immersive dynasty mode, over 112 teams to play with will keep you busy for years, the CPU runs the option really well finally as well as teams truly play to their personalities. Just a great package. Immersive presentation, games breaks with Reece Davis, the real time ticker, halftime commentary is cool. Multiple camera angles to play with...great great game as well.

I'm an old 2k'r and have a good time with the last few Maddens. Problem is, I don't get the replay value I used to. Not sure if it's just age or the game is stale and predictable after a few seasons, but I lose interest much faster these days.

2K5's presentation is definitely better. Still can't believe Madden hasn't improved presentation yet.

Still playing, although it is the kind of game that requires long sittings and it is hard to accomplish with kids. I guess I'm about 20 hours in. I'm still messing around the first town. Taking my time. Enjoying the old school vibe.

The problem I've had with Madden is the online and lack of improvement from year to year.

It's been a while since I played but Be a Pro Mode should almost be a story. Have a Auto Assist and Skip Now button for those would don't want to do that. I want to do interviews, practice, offseason workouts of my choice (mini games to boost stats). I want commercials and if you do too much it has a temporary effect on stats. I want rivals for in the game. So if my WR character burns Sherman, he remembers. Maybe Earl Thomas goes for big hits instead of sure tackles too. Maybe if me and another guy at the same position are drafted at the same time I get a bonus of some sort. Or maybe I just get into a twitter war with someone. Maybe this impacts what happens when my player enters free agency. I want to walk around the locker room and talk to other players. Maybe they give me tips about something or make bets about whether they have better stats then me or offer to do offseason work outs with my character. As you get better you'll train with Larry Fitz instead of Andre Robert or by yourself. Hire better trainer maybe. Then I want to be walk to the weight room to decide if I want to work out or walk out to field if I want to do drills.

I don't understand why there has to be just small changes every year. If time is the issue just have three different studios work on it. Then there's a three year window for them to improve. Plus, different people with different ideas. When you look at the how vast and diverse and in depth the worlds of Fall Out, Skyrim, GTA, and so on and so on and EA just deals with basically different skins on an open field they should have so much more room to improve and innovate with.

Speaking as somebody who liked the beta and will buy the full game, I can see where the complaints are coming from. The PvE missions are all pretty much the same -- go there, kill some bad guys, go there, kill some more, go there, kill several waves, go there, kill a few more waves and a boss. All the story missions, the strike, and the public missions played out more or less exactly like that. This didn't bother me because I liked the gunplay, and I'm fine with formula and repetition if I enjoy the game's mechanics, but lots of people aren't. In this respect, Destiny is probably compares to Uncharted -- essentially the same combat over and over again.

PvP was also nothing special and felt pretty stale right out of the gate. It's definitely twitchy and is the sort of thing I'll never be any good at, for the same reason that I get wrecked at COD.

Thats because EA is primarily a business before its a game company anymore. If they have a marketable business model that sells millions of units with only minimal progamming hours, then they stick to that profit plan. They look at what the best profit line is before they decide on creative changes. They allocate X amount of dollars solely on how many units they think they'll sell with each programming hour added. When they reach the point that more programming hours means less profit margin, they stop.

Pros:

It's a revved-up Baldur's Gate with great graphics

Better-than-average story

Combat is turned-based

You can affect the environment (and your enemies) with oil, fire, water, freezing, etc.

Crafting, if you're into that, is loaded up. Personally, I'm not into that, and am tired of looking at all these plants in my inventory.

Cons:

Wonky camera angles make it tough to see things occasionally

Inventory system needs tweaking. Takes too long buying and selling

Doesn't hold your hand on quests like other games that give you a map marker to tell you exactly where to go. Results in a lot of "what do I do now" moments.

Difficult to play without a wiki ("I have to move barrel #36 to find the switch, really?")

The cons are just annoyances that detract from an otherwise great game.

I see Divinity 2 for 360. How is that one? My son has a 360 and loves RPG's. Cool game?

It's fun, and a worthwhile RPG, but nothing like the one we are talking about here - Divinity 2 is akin to Two Worlds, Arcana Gothic 4, Risen, etc. Basically Skyrim-lite.

At what point does it become okay to we ask the Divinity, Madden and Destiny people to take it to another thread?

I started Last of Us last night on the PS4. Wow, that's a downer of an opening. (I played for another 45 minutes after that, but please no spoilers.)

My initial impressions are that the game looks very good - almost a higher res version of Uncharted (not surprising given the same studio), but the controls feel a bit more stiff than that franchise... this includes the aiming which I thought Uncharted wasn't all that great to begin with. These points are definitely not deal breakers for me as I'm much more interested in the story of the game.

The aiming is stiff and slow by design. There's an upgrade that will dramatically reduce the built-in weapon sway and make shooting significantly more accurate.
