Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (8 Viewers)

I have 4 days off and clear schedule so, I’m going to dive into Monster Hunter. I keep hearing about it but I’ve never played a Monster Hunter game so I figured I would give it a shot. I am about 20 minutes into the game and finished my first quest. Thoughts so far...

Pros: Looks great. Interesting enough story premise. Movement is fine. Very deep item systems.

Cons: Wonky cutscenes and voice overs. Seems like there is too much to try and remember. Live/in combat items management feels cumbersome. Very slow pacing to the game so far.

I will post again as I put in more time to this game.

It is a great game that you can sink a ridiculous amount of hours in to.

The cut scenes etc are almost comical but they don't bother me. On the item management you'll want to get your quick radial menu set up. It took me a bit to get used to it.

I'd recommend watching a youtube tutorial on your chosen weapon type. There are many moves and combos that the game won't expressly teach you. Also try out a bunch of different weapon types. Most are pretty fun to use.

My plan is to just wing it until I run into major problems. I think I’m limiting my enjoyment by stressing out or trying to remember about all these systems and such.

Usually in games I’m a hoarder and extremely cheap but I think doing that (especially early on) I will miss out on lessons that I might learn equal a greater mistake later on.

Caution to the wind, baby!

Don't worry about missing things. The game is huge and you can always go back and play any mission, investigation or optional quest. Also you can hoard all you want, especially early on. You won't be short on zenny (the game currency) so don't worry about selling anything you gather.

Enjoy!

@Kanil the Tornado Man Saga is awesome. I give it a like before I even read it. Keep it coming please.
Ask and ye shall receive.

The Saga of Tornado Man (continued):  Episode 4: Maghda (finally)

This session began with the party leaving Caldeum at what appeared to be mid-day in search for Maghda.  Shortly after leaving we met an enchanter who was there to guide us on our way.  Within the first 2 fights, Tornado Man had died 3 times.  One of these deaths caused what appeared to be a cry of, "damnit" to come from Tornado Man's mouth.  Apparently Tornado Man has been paying attention to Tornado Dad while he plays.

Pause game for a discussion about not using that word.  After a promise from Tornado Man, play resumed.  Mom and dad were seeing much difficulty killing mobs as well and that's when the party realized we had the difficulty level pumped up from when Tornado Mom and Tornado dad were playing other characters and forgot to turn it back down.

Restart

The session continued with the party leaving Caldeum at what appeared to be mid-day in search for Maghda.  We again met the enchanter who helped us see through the illusions of our enemy and free multiple townsfolk from an evil coven.  During this mission we found out that Maghda had taken over the nearby city of Alcarnus.  The only road to Alcarnus lead through the Khasim Outpost which was just a short walk away.  Of course, it's a short walk if you walk in a straight line.  Straight lines are for sissies.  Tornado Man had decided to work on his cardio this day which meant zig-zagging across the entire map, covering most areas at LEAST two times.  After a while he admitted he was lost.  Luckily, Tornado Mom was able to find a route we had not yet explored and point our faithful leader in the right direction.

The posse entered the outpost at what still appeared to be mid-day (I'm not sure though as time seems to work differently here).  Tornado Man instructed the head guard to open the barricaded gate so that we may make our way to Alcarnus.  The guard told us to visit the Captain who was in a cellar of a house nearby.  Totally not shady at all.  Tornado Man led his party into the cellar only to find a projection of Maghda waiting for him!  She monologued a bit before Tornado Man let her know that she would be a sacrifice of the lord she served.  She disappeared and a group of snake-men appeared out of nowhere.

Tornado Man leapt into action (although he didn't really leap as he had already replaced that skill with another, thank heavens).  He quickly dispatched one of the invaders before proceeding to attack the empty air in front of him for the next ten second while Tornado Mom and Dad killed the rest.  The party proceeded out of the cellar only to have the guards outside morph into snake-men as well!  They were quickly destroyed and the party would be free to make it's way to Alcarnus.

The path to Alcarnus was short as Tornado Man somehow managed to go in a direct line straight to the bridge entering the city.  There is no doubt in the minds of mom and dad they are blessed as this is a true modern miracle.  After killing their way through the city they finally met Maghda in the flesh.  While Maghda was monologueing again, Tornado Man figured out how to skip a cut scene.  He did so and said, "she's boring me".  After a hard fought battle, Maghda finally paid for her evil deeds.

It was still mid-day as Tornado Man triumphantly stated, "awww man, mommy got the orange item and I didn't get anything".  With those words of wisdom the party made their way back to Caldeum where they would repair their gear and sell the items they had collected.  The group decided to end for the evening.  Later that night as Tornado Dad was tucking Tornado Man into bed Tornado Man said, "Dad, what were those snake men?".  Tornado Dad quickly recognized this stall tactic for what it was and told Tornado Man they'd talk about it tomorrow.

I don't have kids, and I really, really like not having kids.

That said, for a brief moment, reading your awesome saga makes me just a bit envious. If I had a kid, I'm certain we'd be gaming together.

Has Tornado Mom or Dad gifted Tornado Man any cool swag yet?
We're playing season mode so no trading items allowed.  That said, once this season is over and his seasons character moves to a normal character, he'll be able to get decked out.

This was one of those "I cant wait until he's old enough to..." moments.  There are plenty of others like board games, movies, or shows but honestly the gaming is what I wanted the most.  We've already discussed having to get a third TV and PlayStation at some point just so we can all play online together.

Its been so long since I played.     Not sure it still installed.    So not sure I remember season mode.   But I totally will gift Tornado Man some Legendary Swag

If its still installed - I 'm totally leaving an item in the Mailbox.

Mailbox doesn't work in seasons.  Once we progress out of that (each season lasts X amount of weeks) I'll hook him up.  I've got full sets of set items to give away.  I'm at the point now where I only keep an item if it's a set item or an ancient item with really good stats.

:lmao:  This reminds me of a time my barb and my wife's demon hunter were ambushed in a narrow part of a cave. I attack the mob on the left, she's killing a group closing in from the right. I'm concentrating on my side and dispatch my foes, but see that she hadn't made much progress with her mob. Turns out she forgot which character she was and was somehow facing north, button mashing crossbow bolts into a wall. If not for a stack of sentries killing some baddies for her, she'd be a puddle of goo 5 times over.

Well my 4 days off turned into 1 (yesterday) so I guess I’m done for a bit. I do have 3 smaller complaints.

First, the day/night/weather cycle is interesting but I hate games that I have to play during in a night cycle. Not a deal breaker but bothers me.

Next, is the lack of progression with my weapon. I’m using the bowgun and it’s doing single digit damage per shot still special ammo will get me between 9 and 20 but obviously the 20 damage ammo is very limited. Upgraded it twice and have a mod to improve damage on it. Battles take forever. It has a melee attack that does 34 damage. So, it’s literally better to hit a monster with the gun (which is kind of funny actually).  I will have to try a new weapon soon.

Finally, the lack of direction is getting tiresome already. I have to go some lava wall thing but have no idea where it is. It’s not showing up on my map (but every single plant is???). Just wandering around hasn’t gotten me there. Plus there’s a mission timer which I hate.

This is a fun game when I get through all the other stuff that trips me up.

Odd question but my brother and I have some old video games. There is a store in the area that I may be interested in giving a list of our stuff to to see if they want to put an offer down. Which price guide online is the best one to use? There are a couple when you Google... gamevaluenow.com, pricecharting.com, or is there another? Kind of curious about this stuff.

I'm looking for new games to play w/my 8-year old daughter.  I'm wondering if Shadow of the Colossus would be too hard or inappropriate for her?  And I'm guessing I'm a bad parent for even considering if South Park: The Fractured But Whole would be OK?   :bag:

I rarely buy video games anymore, so I really have no clue what kids that age can play outside Minecraft, the Lego games and Little Big Planet.

ebay is a fantastic tool to use to determine what people will actually pay for a game.  That should give you a very good idea of their true worth.

My 8 year old plays the games mentioned in your last sentence and Mario. I doubt he'd be interested in shadow of colossus. And no way on south park dude.

Are you messing with me right now?
It wouldn't be the first time a brand that was built on more mature audiences became more kid friendly.

Look, I asked the question.  It wasn't totally unfounded.  You all responded it's not kid appropriate.  OK.  Y'all can unwad your panties now and get back to talking about women with black eyes around here.

Had a friend who had just brought up Shadow of Colossus today.  Asked and he said he thought too much killing for an 8 year old.

He suggested Okami.   I've not played either, so just passing on without comment.

Just finished Last of Us. Second time through the game, though first time with Remastered.

Still got to me at the end.   :o

The music is so gorgeous.

Cool, thanks.

Also, I've only played a few minutes of the VR version, but I'm guessing a kid might enjoy Bound.  Age rating is 10+ but sounds like it's clean:

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW

Parents need to know that Bound is a downloadable action platformer. Action mainly consists of playing as a Tron-like princess ballerina winding her way through obstacle-laden areas filled with abstract shapes. There's no combat, gore, or inappropriate content in the game.

Also, The Last Guardian... it's by the makers of Shadow of Colossus but not as violent apparently according to the same friend who suggested against Shadow.  Again, I've only played the VR demo which is about 15 minutes worth, but it seems like a game a kid might like.  Everyone I've showed the VR demo to is pretty blown away actually.

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW

Parents need to know that The Last Guardian is an action-adventure game. There's little parents will find objectionable, and while there are some fights with possessed suits of armor, they are crushed to bits in combat. There are some moments where Trico, the feathered beast, gets injured by these suits, and bloodstains appear on his coat. Otherwise, there's no excessive gore to be found.

Yeah, the ending was important, but that chapter was what really made the game hit home the most.
I dig the entire game, it’s #2 on my all time list (I like making lists).  When #2 comes out, that’ll be the reason I finally grab a PS4.

So many games could be #1 on my list. Heroes of Might and Magic 3, System Shock 2, Warcraft 2... all really captivated me for a long time. And there's no doubt in my mind that I've sunk more hours into Skyrim than any other game. And the original Halo is an amazing shooter that changed everything (and the split screen was a blast). The first Thief game, Myth the Fallen Lords, the above-mentioned Deus Ex - all fantastic.

But it's gotta be Baldur's Gate 2 for me.

I ranked 100 games... at that point by the end there are games I really enjoyed, but I can replace them when other games come along. At the top though, it takes something special to really move something down. Duke Nukem and Warcraft 2 for instance, for me those are games that were some of the first I played online multiplayer with. Also my parents split at that time, so I’d play my dad in these at night - unplug the phone cord and into the computer, play some Warcraft 2 late at night with Dad. Great times.

Warcraft II was the first game I ever played online. Back in the DOS Kali days on Case's Ladder. Man, those were the golden days of gaming for me. Once Win 3.1 came out and unleashed Kali on the unwashed masses, it was all downhill.

I'll have to give the game ranking some thought.

As far as time spent... probably Starcraft.  Had well over 5k wins on my account, and I still play 2v6 cpu offline for stress release.

My oldest reminded me of one of my lesser moments yesterday, he loves to bring up.  As soon as they were old enough to hold a controller, I had them playing games with me.  We started with Mario Party, and worked up from there.  At one point, we were playing FIFA on the Wii.  They weren't quite at the level of being competitive with me yet, so the three of us would play on the same team.  They would constantly pass or kick the ball out of bounds.  Apparently after a long day I was out of patience for their less than advances skills and I told them to "play by themselves and learn how to play before we played together again."  Not one of my finer moments, and one I won't be able to forget thanks to the better memory of my oldest son.

This was one of those "I cant wait until he's old enough to..." moments.  There are plenty of others like board games, movies, or shows but honestly the gaming is what I wanted the most.  We've already discussed having to get a third TV and PlayStation at some point just so we can all play online together.
My wife doesn't game with us but recently relented to my buying another TV for our video gaming room, and three reclyners, for the sole use of my and my two sons.  It's glorious.  It might take a while for the third TV.  Our typical Sunday where we don't have anything going on was had yesterday, Cavs/Boston game on one TV, and the three of us playing our NBA2K season on the other.

Just announced, the next CoD will be Black Ops 4.
:kicksrock:

Got my PC up and running again after having it sit unplugged for almost a year.  Got a bunch of updates taken care of and played some Minecraft and Don't Starve.  I've but numerous hours into Minecraft but never spent much time on Don't Starve.  I played for a while last night and really enjoyed it.  I can see me putting some more time into that one going forward.

How many of you have seen the MLB the show '18 trailer? It looks like they fixed a ton of the fielding animations which needed a massive overhaul. Anyone play diamond dynasty the plays the show??

Nice list. I have to separate my sports games from my non sports games. I will come up with a top 25 for Sports and Non Sports. I have generations of games to choose from that I have spent thousands of hours playing (Atari 2600 all the way to the PS4 Pro). Wow......it will be hard to pick and choose.

It's hard at that age.  I think my son and I did mostly sports games, Mario, and Rayman type of games.  I think around this time he started liking Risk and Civilization.

It is still a struggle - is 11 now and we just do T games max still, so the list is similar with some WWE, UFC, and Battlefront mixed in.
