I read that there isn't a bonus challenge this year. From what I can see, this year's game looks weak compared to the last three years. Plus, after a great 2k11 & 2k12, 2k13 was a huge disappointment. What is great this year that the last three games don't offer? Well, I think they added international teams, but other than that.

Teaser for Frictional's (makers of the original Amnesia) new game, SOMA.

It appears to be a Sci-fi Horror game, not since System Shock and eventually the disappointment of the Dead Space franchise has a Sci-fi Horror game intrigued me more.

They are releasing more stuff every day in a similar fashion, as sort of a classified/redacted information. Looking forward to ####ting my pants.

What is the word on BEYOND Two Souls?

Never got into Heavy Rain but loved the story of The Last of Us. What could a casual gamer expect out of this story and gameplay?

Is Dead Space 3 so bad that it diminishes the entire franchise or were you disappointed with DS1 & DS2 as well?

"Gameplay" is pretty repetitive... there are some cool parts where you have to run and do a little bit of shooting and stuff. The fighting is kind of fun but you're just pushing the stick in the direction she seems to be going. Doesn't seem like there's much of a consequence if you don't get it right... which can take away some of the tension.

But the story... wow... it's good. Really captured me emotionally. I actually clapped at the end like it was a movie... don't think I've ever done that with a game. There's definitely some replay value to it as you make decisions that slightly alter the story, but I would consider it more of a rental game. I got through it in about 12 hours or so. Could probably get it down to 10. Good game to play for Halloween as it's got a bit of a scary side to it

Thanks. I enjoyed Heavy Rain, but that was definitely a rental IMO. I'll have to check this one out similarly.

Yes.

99% of horror is atmosphere and immersion, Deadspace 3 had the atmosphere of a poorly written R.L. Stine book and was about as immersive as call of duty. I didn't even enjoy campaign at all until I played it co-op and even then it felt more like Mass Effect 3 sans the horror. If the franchise had just stuck to its survival-horror roots it could have been this generations system shock, but it opted to just completely change gears mid-stream.

What this generation needs is System Shock 3. Nary a peep about it though.

What I keep waiting for is the epic return at one of the big reveal shows like E3. Some one is talking about an unimportant game when suddenly the lights dim. The walls begin to change colors and become distorted. A voice rings out "Look at you humans. Pathetic Creatures of meat and bone. I have returned to end your trivial existence." Her new face fades onto all the vid screens. She slowly opens her menacing eyes and says one phrase. "I am SHODAN, your new GOD!" System Shock 3 is here.

I think Frictional might be bringing about a spiritual successor, too early to say since there isn't a ton of information but that is the vibe I'm getting from it.

Path to greatness is the new challenge mode. As Lebron you choose to either stay with the Heat or move to another team. If your a Lebron fan your going to love it.

The controls have been revamped. They now have everything on the right stick (Pro Stick) it is so fluid and smooth and very intuitive. It took me all of an hour in practice and drills to get the hang of it.

Defense is the best it has ever been. track down blocks look and feel unreal. Dunks are hard to come by and very rewarding. Rebounding is much better. Passing is crisp, varied (bounce, lob, bullet, flashy), play calling is amazing with 2K smart play options (LT PS3). Playing against the AI is better than ever.

Again remember I am going from 2K11 to 2K14. I skipped 12 and 13 (and now may go back and purchase 2K12 just for the legends challenge which I heard was amazing).

It is a very nice end to this console generation and since I am not going next gen till at least X-Mas of 2014 I will be plenty busy with all the games I have yet to play.

A bit disappointed with your take. I was hoping for The Last of Us 2.0. Might still play it but need to do more research. Argh!

Thanks for the info. I still don't think I'm gonna be getting this year's game. 2K11 is still enough game to keep me for awhile. I'd be playing 2k13, but I'm really disappointed with the PC version that I got on Steam during the sale.

Yea, it's more of a cinematic experience (Willem Dafoe is in it) than a gaming one. The only way it's like Last Of Us is that you control a little girl for awhile, that's about it, IMO.

The graphics are beautiful and the story is probably the best ever in a video game (themes are right up my alley, some people probably won't dig it). Still can't recommend it as a buy even with the different ways you can choose for the story to go.

Wish it was a little more like Second Sight, which I was reminded of while playing it. That game was badazz!

The Witcher 2 - My goodness the boss fight with the other witcher (Letho) is a major PITA even on normal difficulty. The guy is a friggin tank.

Probably doesn't help that I put all my points into the alchemy tree (to get the mutagen bonus) instead of magic or swordsmanship which might have helped just a little against this #######.

Come to think of it, Starcraft 2 was basically just a Starcraft 1 remake too. Still a great game but I wonder if Blizzard has gotten complacent after printing money off of these franchises and Warcraft.
:goodposting:
Technically this was expected since Starcraft 1, 2 and 3 are suppose to be the same storyline from three different perspectives. SC2 was terrible compared to 1, I hope they do a better job with 3, which is suppose to be the end to the trilogy. If you play all three races in 1 and 2, 3 will not have any wow factor.
Your phrasing is very confusing, are you talking about the original Starcraft in comparison to Starcraft: Wings of Liberty, or are you talking about Wings of Liberty in comparison to Heart of the Swarm? There is no SC3 and to my knowledge they won't be developing one, the 2nd expansion is slotted to release in 2015 called Legacy of the Void, last I checked.

Heart of the Swarm was okay, brought excellent balance changes to multiplayer, the cinematics and campaign were also top notch. Thats one thing Blizzard always gets right, their cinematic department is top of the ladder.
A very late reply, I meant Wings of Liberty followed by Heart of Swarm. Legacy of the Void is the third that I was referring to for "SC3", which I think is suppose to complete the story. When I wrote that above I did not realize the next one had a name already, 2015 sounds like a long time to wait but I guess that's the norm for Blizz.

For Diablo 3 players on console, is it geared more towards multiplayer or will it be as fun playing the storyline on my own? Will I miss out on anything if I play it alone?

Do you have any recommendations for gamepads for a PC gamer (primarily using Steam and Gamefly if that makes a difference).

Seems like the XBox 360 controller makes most sense but you seem to be the guy to ask and I don't think I am going to wait for Steam's to get to market.

ETA: I would be getting one primarily for Dark Souls.

I have only been playing alone and it is great (if you enjoy these type of games).

Some day I will try online but for now I am just grinding my way to the longest trophy.

I use an XBox 360 wired controller. You can get a wireless one with an adapter too.

I really hope 2K Sports grabs the NCAA Football license.
It's an issue with NCAA, not with EA not wanting to make a video game. I put odds at 99.99999% that you won't see 2k Sports taking a shot at it. Unless they go with generic teams, it's too expensive. But sure, we can still hope.

If you have a wired 360 controller you can use that, otherwise I recommend a rock candy pad, you can find them online and at Walmart stores for $15.

I've played a little on my own and enjoyed it, but it's been more fun doing some couch co-op with the lovely Mrs. Drebin. (actually that statement rings true in multiple facets of our marriage)

Does same tv co-op do a split screen or are you tethered together?

I don't think he was joking. The reviews are pretty good, especially considering the price.

I don't get it :whoosh:

I use a blue rock candy pad, bought mine at Walmart for $15. Haven't had a problem with it, only complaint is the plastic it is made out of isn't porous at all so it makes my palms sweaty.

My bad I guess.. Beyond the pink it looks really flimsy.

How is the button mapping?

You're tethered. If one player gets too far away, it teleports the other across the map. I haven't paid enough attention to know how it determines which player to move.

It does look cheap, but its actually a great pad, the mapping is 1:1, dpad, two analogs including press switches, 6 face buttons with standard ABXY, two shoulder buttons and two triggers, the only problem I've had with button mapping is with some games that require you to press in an analog stick to run, it doesn't register as being held down just simply pressed.

Everything is plug and play these days, I had no trouble with compatibility - works great with autohotkey and xpadder, two programs I use when I wanna use a gamepad for games that don't natively support them.

Pretty solid plastic, long cord, controller has rumble if that is a selling point, also has a quick release port (like original xbox controllers) so if for whatever reason you fall somehow while playing games you won't pull your PC off its perch.

Nice breakdown. Thanks.

And the pink one will save me $16 off the traditional XBox controller too. Although I may spend the extra $10 to not get pink, that sucker burns my eyes.

Thanks for the feedback, will be picking this up this weekend.

Depending on how Elder Scrolls online does (I don't have high hopes), we may have to wait a long time before we see another Elder Scrolls title.

Been really bored, decided to download Divinity: Dragon Commander and I have to say this game gets it.

Its a mixture of most of my favorite gameplay elements and genres. Part civilization, part risk, part total war, part panzer dragoon.

started Diablo 3 last night, got about an hour of playtime in and so far not that impressed. in fact the game seems easy to this point. playing Monk up to level 6. Some questions for you guys who have finished the story or are far along. The questions are specific to single player, i'll dive into multiplayer one day.

Does it get more difficult? I am playing in Medium (whatever the default is) level and haven't come close to dying yet. Should I play at Hard? I noticed there are levels that are locked until I beat it in Hard mode.

Is the storyline the same for all character types? Or is there any kind of a variation for each class? Tank, Range, Healer, and Magic, seems like a straight forward setup for multi-player grind group.

There is a training ground you can access, but there is nothing there. Is that significant for anything later?

Are trades significant? Are they class specific?

Is there a message board dedicated to Diablo 3, more specific to the PS3 or console play in general?

Thanks in advance.

1) The game can either be very easy or very hard depending on the mode you are playing

There are 8 modes of monster difficulty:

Easy, Medium, Hard, Master 1, Master 2, Master 3, Master 4, and Master 5

You are playing on the second easiest setting which means you are basically in god mode.

There are 4 modes of the game (see below). Each mode represents the same 4 acts with new and improved monsters to help you continue to level.

Normal, Nightmare, Hell, Inferno

I am a level 60 character(max before Paragon kicks in) and level 6 paragon. I am playing Master 1 difficulty at Inferno level now and it is challenging. I would not stay alive even a second in Master 3 difficulty when faced with a pack of elites.

2) the story is the same for each character

The characters themselves have a ton of variation. I completely changed my wizard late in the game to deal with end game stuff. The mixture of skills and runes can lead to numerous combination with in a character class, assuming you have turned on elective mode.

3) No training ground but you can replay any quest you have already completed if you want to practice, farm, or grind.

4) People do trade online. Some items are class specific, some are not. It will be defined in the items description if it class specific. End game appears to be very gear oriented.

5) I have found this message board helpful. It is trophy based but people answer plenty of regular game questions.

There is also a mountain of information on the PC version (which is very similar) here

Thanks NewlyRetired. Looks like I need to crank it up a notch. The setup really is for multiplayer then with gear specific builds I guess, it just got more interesting.

I can't speak for multiplayer as I am flying solo right now. I know others on here do play multi so hopefully they can help you. Note that the various "Master Mode" levels don't unlock until you level up to certain points.

There is also a Hardcore Mode if you really like to be challenged. This is a special one and done mode, ie die once and game is over.

So the ultimate challenge would be Hardcore Mode, on Master 5, completing Inferno.

 looks like i was swimming in the kiddie pool and didn't notice the deep end is endlessly deep over on the other side.
Note you have to play softcore with one character up to level 10. That unlocks hardcore mode as a choice for the next character you want to play

Been really bored, decided to download Divinity: Dragon Commander and I have to say this game gets it.

Its a mixture of most of my favorite gameplay elements and genres. Part civilization, part risk, part total war, part panzer dragoon.
Game is 40% off on steam right now.

For those curious, its a strategy game of a couple different flavors.

You play the son of the former emperor slain by your brother and sisters who seeks to reunite the empire and end the war that broke out between your siblings over who will take over the empire. To do this you must take control of territories on a Risk style board, you do this by fighting real time strategy battles where you control units RTS style, in addition to which you can enter the battle yourself in the thirdperson as a dragon - with a jet engine.

As you are rebuilding an empire on the backs of five different races each with their own unique diplomat, you will get to make decisions that will adjust your popularity and influence with them - such as legalizing gay marriage as lobbied for by the very progressive Elves but lobbied against by the super zealous Undead.

A new online CCG just went into beta and for the next two days anyone can get into the beta.

Infinity Wars - beta code is TWITCH

Website is currently getting slammed with heavy traffic but when the page loads create an account, then log in and in the invitation field enter the code TWITCH to gain access to the beta, you can then download the game client.

Full disclosure I've never played this game before, just heard great things about it and since entry is limited to the next two days I thought I should spread the word. But I'm a huge CCG fan and one of the many things of praise I've heard is that you can easily play the game without dropping a dime on it.

Will play the beta tonight and report my findings.

Edit:

Pleasantly surprised at how fun this game is - CCGs, especially free or cash shop CCGs are typically unplayable or not worth playing but I played this for 3 hours last night and had a blast even better they practically just give you cards. I played through 3 of the campaigns (there is one for each of the 6 factions) once you're half way through a campaign they give you a starter deck of that faction as well as a reward for winning each mission (8 per campaign). As you rank up you also gain rewards and every game you earn in game currency that you can spend on packs.

Has a mix of nice mechanics a few of which are unique that combine for a fresh CCG experience.

It is actually part of a new Humble Weekly Sale. Pretty decent one this week.
