Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

Just finished The Walking Dead season 2. Man, Telltale games is killing it.

I don't know how they did it, but Clementine might be the best video game character ever.

Managed to have that familiar TWD bittersweetness to all the endings. Nothing will be right, but life goes on.

Thinking of giving NBA Live a chance this year...done with 2K's VC model. Ruined the entire series. Though I'm going to wait a week or 2 to see reviews and gameplay.

I know they've improved the graphics, but have to see how it is on the actual sticks. Anything I get before GTA V is just a stopgap. I'll be playing that all winter.

So far have watched the beginning of Shadow of Mordor twice (both the kids got to play before I will) and looks to be a really good game. Combat looks like a good mesh between AC and Arkham games with some nice twists. Both kids played for about 30 minutes so didn't get too far into the game, but did get to scratch the surface of the Nemesis system which seems really innovative.

is there any character building from what you can see or does every one use the same items?

Seems like there are choices you make but nothing like Skyrim.

I'm really interested to see how Season 3 starts out, especially given all the possible endings for Season 2.

I'll be interested to hear about this. What I've seen says the game is pretty short, which means I may wait quite a while to make it cost effective.

Yeah, I have been watching on Twitch a little tonight. It seems like there is a small ability tree you can traverse. Similar to Borderlands from the look.

I enjoyed the couple hours I played last night. Its very much a cross between AC and Arkham combat wise. You gain exp from every kill and you also get power points from some missions. power points allow you to unlock the next level and the exp allow you to open up new skills in the skill tree. Example the first level is unlocked when you start and you really can only hit block drain or interrogate, but you can spend exp to make your block also a knock back or train an execute move which beheads most foes(the attack I enjoy most) but in order to pull off the execute you must hit or block 8 consecutive times, then your can perform the execute move.

The nemesis system is great. you get killed by an orc, any orc, and he grows in power. He may also attack other orcs and move up the ranks of the orc army. The nemesis system is very dynamic as any orc you encounter can end up being a captain. Example last night I was just getting a feel for things. I had just beat the opening tutorial and started my adventure. Well I saw a captain as soon as I jumped off the starting tower and thought, this should be easy a nice captain to start so I can get some exp and loot(to be explained). I really thought he was a feeder captain to get me started, well low and behold him and his orc friends destroyed me quickly. after he killed me he leveled up and attacked a higher ranking orc captain and moved up into his position in the army. now my nemesis is even stronger and a higher rank.

Loot the only loot you get is runes for your weapons which consist of a sword dagger and bow. The runes give powers like restore focus or heal back to full health after killing a captain etc. this is not borderlands or Diablo when it comes to loot, but every captain drops a rune and the rune depends on the weapon you killed the captain with (I think) at first each weapon can only equip on rune but you can open up more rune slots by using exp points. I did find a epic rune last night and that rune I can level 10 times, but it will only level when I use it to kill a captain and as I level it up the orcs will become afraid of this powerful weapon and name it.

I play alot of games and most are mediocre, this is my leader in the clubhouse for GOTY currently, of course this depends on how the new games coming out fair.

If your a Tolkien fan this story takes place between the Hobbit and LoTR and most of the info is canon. Celebrimdor is the only non canon entity I have encountered. I dont ever recall him being a wraith, but he is in this story. Being a LoTR geek is not required ( I am not but my wife is) to enjoy this game. Beheading and orc and watching his black blood spray everywhere and his head roll around on the ground is one of the most satisfying things to watch. not all beheadings have the same animation either so there is some variety, except for interrogation kills those animate the same everytime.

TLDR: great game if you like AC or Arkham combat mixed with the new nemesis system make this a must own. My early score is about an 88/100. For reference I would have scored Skyrim about 91/100, GTA V a 93/100 TLoU 95/100 .

Herc,

Do you think Mordor is a long term game or a quick play through and you're done? And is there any co-op?
I cant honestly answer if its a long term game yet or not. Could it be yes, but could it become repetitive? Possibly, but I think the nemesis system may make it ok. I dont know of any coop, I dont think so and the box only says 1 player.

Today one of the captains I killed last night showed up with a plate covering half of the top of his head from where I blasted him in the eye with an arrow. He was a random encounter not part of the nemesis system again.

I plan on playing more tonight ask any questions you want.

That was part of the Nemesis system, Kotaku has a piece about this specifically stating that unless you execute an Orc/Uruk they can come back later patched up and upgraded and will remember the fight.

Just started Mordor. Gonna take me awhile to figure out what the heck im doing but it seems liek a game im absolutely gonna love. Its basically assasins creed style game.

Somehow i got stuck fighting like an entire army at once, i killed one captain but two survived and some scrub killed me and he got promoted to captain. Argh!

Yeah my son was in the first area and kept running into two higher level guys that started at 6. They killed him so many times they were 14 before he quit. He couldn't get past the area.

Legitimately worried that choices will be made irrelevant in season 3 specifically because of how diverse the endings were.

Basically, they kill Jane or Kenny 10 minutes into the next season, or they live longer and make no impactful contributions.

These are true spoilers for those who have a habit of clicking on them anyway. Stop reading now.

Or the family you meet if you go back to Lowe's Howe's, assuming you let them in at all. There were so many possible endings. It'll be so disappointing if they eliminate them in the first minutes sort of like they did with Omid and Christa this season.
Hey! Nested spoilers actually do work!

I'm a little confused. I have started Madden 15 for my first Madden game since the early 2000s, and I want to do a franchise mode. You guys talk about CFM(connected franchise mode??), but is their a offline one to? Maybe I looking at this wrong. Is the CFM a normal franchise mode that gets roster updates because it is connected or does the CFM mean you play online with friends altogether in a franchise mode?

How is Mordor?? I loved Assassain Creed 2 and thought 3 was okay. Hows the game play in it? I feel out of the loop with being so busy and not having any game /hobby stores nearby now.

After day two of playing Mordor. I need to make a correction to a few things I stated earlier. Previously I stated the weapons would level up by killing Captains. I was incorrect, the way to level up your weapons is by doing quests marked with a sword dagger or bow. the quests to level up are called challenges in most other games. Example kill 10 uruk with a bow, sounds simple, but when you have archers on both sides its more likely you will take a dirt nap than complete the quest. Some of the challenges are timed and the timer is tough to beat even if you are full out sprinting, and if your attacked by a random mob, forget completing the quest in time.

Captains do drop a rune every time they are killed, but there is not any correlation between what weapon you use and the rune that is dropped. So it can be a little frustrating if you use a sword most of the time and get bow runes or vice versa. I am assuming the runes are random I have several that are epic and some are not quite so epic. I haven't figured out if there is any correlation between the tier/level of the captain versus the quality of the rune.

I am still in the first area and have only done 3-4 main quests since I am actually enjoying running around and getting in scrums. One nice touch is I can ride the Caragor. Caragor are dog like wild creatures and they are attacking orcs and prisoners randomly throughout the area. Some are even in cages and you can break the lock and unleash them on the unsuspecting orcs. Caragor can climb ledges and walls and their attack is ferocious so getting away from them is a tall task, but they will not attack you if you are riding one your self. You can attack while mounted or have the animal bite your foe.

The atmosphere in the first area is all the same ruins, broken walls, a few towers, strongholds and a few caves. I would not call it bland but the first area does not have alot of diversity.

I must be completely honest and say I wasn't as into it last night as I was the night before, but I am coming down with the flu. This does not mean its a bad game I was just having trouble getting into it. The first night everything was OMG this is awesome last night was fun, but I wasn't yelling everytime I beheaded an orc like the night before.

I am starting to see some flaws in the gameplay though, I think the combat is about right but there is no difficulty to adjust. the combat is much more forgiving than demon soul.

I have to go to a meeting I'll add a little more, later.

To continue my follow up. I think the combat is about right it feels more like Arkham than AC. The controls are pretty tight and you can stop an attack up to a certain point to throw up a block, but once you are about half way through a swing you cant stop it, which makes perfect sense. Getting swarmed by 20 orcs will quickly wear you down if you dont block or dodge. There is a skill to area of effect stun, but I havent unlocked the 3rd tier of skills yet I think that skill will make mass combats much easier.

Yesterday I spoke about the tiers and skills. When you start there are 6 skills in the first tier so after gaining 6 levels of exp you are maxed in the first tier. You can unlock the next tier by progressing the main story, killing orcs which are on missions( dueling another boss, feasting, etc), or dying. Yes every time you die you get 10 Power points. The Orc missions are part of the nemesis system where they are fighting to be the top dog of the orc army. The orc missions also feel very organic and natural, they are not forced on you and you can ignore them completely, but once they complete a mission they gain a level or 2 making them tougher.

Back to skills and tiers there are 5 different tiers to unlock total and each tier has approx 10-12 skills. Some skills can only be aquired by progressing the story. example Poison the orc grog is a skill you can not unlock until you get that mission. I had to sneak into a stronghold undetected and poison 5 barrels of grog scattered throughout. Stealth killing an orc will not fail the mission, but trying a head shot with another orc around results in a failure. I speak from experience on that one:)

I can honestly say that the story hasnt engrossed me, but wife is enjoying watching me play since she loves Tolkien. I am getting alot more enjoyment out of the side missions and the nemesis system. Like I previously stated I wasnt able to get into it last night but thats not a bad thing since I would still score the game 80+. If you found dark souls a great game this game will probably be too easy unless you are surrounded by 10-20 orcs at a time. I still haven't fought a warchief which is the top of the nemesis system, but I did get into a bad spot last night where I was fighting an orc captain and another captain and his troops just happened to be walking by, So now I am attacking blocking jumping to get behind the shielded guys to get some hits in and its a constant back and forth with my health. finally I get most of the small orcs handled and I am left with 2 captains, I start the process of working on them and just my luck another group walks up on us with another captain and his 10 friends. 3 captains was just a little too much since they seem to hit like a truck so it wasnt long before I was taking a dirt nap and the orc captains were doing a dance on my lifeless body.

I am about 50% done with the first are not including the main mission so I should get to the next area by this weekend. Once I do I will post an update and see how I feel about the game still at that time. Any questions feel free to ask and I will answer to the best of my ability.

TLDR: the wow factor is gone and the game does have some imperfections, but they are not game breaking. The nemesis system is probably going to be the saving grace for this game, it is much better than the main story line, to me anyway I am still in the first area and there is not much variety to the environment. I'll update next week unless anyone has a question.

What's the Mordor save system like? If a captain gets too strong from killing you, can you reload to when he was a lower level?

The save system is automatic so you cant really go back but I believe you can have separate save files.

Through the nemesis system you can find out the captains strengths and weaknesses by interrogating orcs or finding notes throughout the game. I did find an orc who was immune to bow, sword and dagger and I was like how the hell am I suppose to kill this guy, well his weakness was Caragor and fire. I have a skill which will explode a fire and fortunately he was around a few locked cages so I just unleashed the hounds and when he was in the right spot I exploded the fire killing him and the caragors, then I walked in and picked up my rune. I would say most of my captains are between lv5 and lv10 currently. I do not know what the lv cap is for the captains. One guy at work was talking about having a lv22 captain to deal with. Dealing with the captains becomes an art form you can not simply have one strategy to beat them all. It will not work the system is too dynamic. At the higher the level they call also summon friends, I have not seen it but I have heard about captains or maybe warchiefs summoning 4 high ranking bodyguards.

Has anyone played Mordor on the PC yet?
Yes, just started it last night. I played the Arkham games on a console and I'm finding it tricky to get the combat system down using the mouse and keyboard. I'll probably end up doing some rebinding but haven't played deep enough to know which I'll really end up needing all the time yet. Right now the most common action keys are <r-ctrl> and <r-shift>, but you also need to use <space> in combat, which is a real pain.

I think it's perpetual save, I can't go back and load a save nor create a save....so not sure exactly how it works.

New ea patch for nhl 15 out now. With another scheduled later this month. I hope the bad reviewers update their reviews

Anything further on this? I'm about to move on, as I just can't seem to get into it. It's one of those games that's great for the first few hours, but then you realize there's nothing more to it. I get no real sense of story, progression, etc. It's just mob-killing orcs, over and over and over again. And they are everywhere - every minute or so, you run into more, kill them in the same "Legolis on steroids" battle, and move on. That seems to be the entire game.

I played a little more this past weekend, but not much due to the flu. I finally progressed to the second area and have really just given up on the main quest. Legolis on steroids is a pretty good description. The Nemesis system I think is going to be used in some type or some fashion by other games moving forward, it is just that good. The rest of it really is just a whack an orc game.

Earlier I was asked about replayability. Meh I may revisit it at some point, but once I am done with it I will walk away from it for a while. The only depth to the game is the nemesis system and if you keep wiping out the captains and warchiefs it definitely become way too easy since they dont get a chance to level.

I would still probably give the game an upper 70 to 80 score, it does some things right, but it could have been so much more.

I would probably score it a little less (6.5/10), but I do agree, it does feel like a "could have been" game, and certain parts are truly excellent. The combat is really fun and engaging, but it gets old fast when it's essentially the same group of orcs over and over again (and the mobs are everywhere - you really can't explore without fighting a mob every minute or so). I could forgive that if it were more like Batman, where you had rooms/areas where you could stealth everyone, or AC, where you had a lot more to do (tombs, other story missions that mattered, etc).

I do think it broke some ground with the nemesis system and the "game within the game" movement of the enemy ranks - I am interested to see where that goes.

So do you guys listen to any gaming podcasts? I have looked around at a few but haven't found anything that stuck.
IGN Beyond is a Playstation podcast I listen to.
The Giant Bombcast. It's too long and certainly R rated but I have been listening to these guys and Tested since they were at PC gamer and maximum pc. I have a lot of subway time each week to burn on podcasts.

Dragon Age Origins is a good game in general and a great game if you like Fantasy RPGs.

It is not open world, however. It gives some flexibility as to the order you can do story lines but once withing that storyline you get led by the nose.

The Giant Bombcast. It's too long and certainly R rated but I have been listening to these guys and Tested since they were at PC gamer and maximum pc. I have a lot of subway time each week to burn on podcasts.
I have long commutes too. I will check it out. Thanks.
