Vikings QB Jackson to have knee surgery

Rookie quarterback Tarvaris Jackson suffered cartilage damage in his right knee during practice Thursday and likely will have surgery Monday, Vikings coach Brad Childress said today.

Childress predicted a recovery timetable of around a month, similar to the time it took rookie cornerback Charles Gordon to recover from a similar procedure this summer.

Childress said he was not sure how the team would handle its No. 3 quarterback position Sunday against Chicago. But it seems the Vikings will need to identify a position player who can play in an emergency if starter Brad Johnson and backup Brooks Bollinger are both injured and can't play during the game.

Vikings rookie QB has knee surgery

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback Tarvaris Jackson had minor knee surgery Monday to repair his meniscus and will miss about a month.

``Everything turned out fine,'' Vikings coach Brad Childress said. ``It was just about as the doctors had expected.''

Jackson, one of the team's three second-round picks in April's draft, was injured during practice last week in a non-contact drill.

That leaves the Vikings with starter Brad Johnson and backup Brooks Bollinger as the only healthy quarterbacks on the roster.

Childress said the Vikings could bring in another passer this week while Jackson is recovering.

``We'll probably have somebody in here to workout the next couple of days,'' Childress said. ``You really don't want those guys taking all those turns when it's the practice team reps as well, so just to have another arm in here.''
