It has just been reported on a local sports station (WEEI) that Adam had signed with Indy. No details on a contract yet.

More info coming....

 
WEEI in Boston is reporting that Adam Vinatieri has signed with the Colts (no numbers yet) and that the Pat's are looking at Paul Edinger and Mike Vanderjack.

Michael Holley of WEEI is reporting that Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri has signed with the Indianapolis Colts. Terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed. Earlier in the day according to a report from the Boston Globe, Vinatieri switched agents to Gary Uberstine. Uberstine reportedly has a business partnership with former Patriot Willie McGinest, which might have led to Vinatieri's decision.

I actually called this one months ago and thought that the ultimate irony would be if the Pats signed Vanderjagt.

 
Another big piece of the New England Patriots' dynasty appears to have left the team.

Kicker Adam Vinatieri — who kicked two game-winning field goals in Patriots Super Bowl wins, as well as another game-winning kick in an epic divisional playoff game against the Raiders — has signed with the Colts, Boston radio station WEEI is reporting.

The Patriots declined to protect their kicker, who had been named the team's franchise player twice, with the franchise-player tag.

"It just didn't feel like the right thing to do," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of the decision not to tag Vinatieri. "We considered all our options and decided not to tag anybody."

Last week, linebacker Willie McGinest signed a three-year, $12 million with the Browns, where the two-time Pro Bowl selection will reunite with former Patriots defensive coordinator and current Cleveland coach Romeo Crennel.

Additionally, the Patriots lost starting receiver David Givens, who signed with the Titans. The future of receiver/defensive back Troy Brown with the team is also uncertain.

I guess we'll see now whether "the Patriots way" of building a team really works based upon how well they rebuild.

 
Rotoworld reported that because he fired his agent today he can not sign a contract for 5 days. They are saying it's probably a verbal agreement at this point.

The most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history is about to be replaced by one of the most clutch placement specialists in the game.

ESPN.com has learned that unrestricted free agent Adam Vinatieri, who provided the winning field goals in two of the New England Patriots' three Super Bowl victories, has reached a contract agreement in principle with the Indianapolis Colts. There remains some work to be done on the contract, but the deal could be completed by Tuesday night.

Contract details were not immediately available.

Vinatieri would replace longtime Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt, the most accurate field goal kicker in NFL annals, who is also an unrestricted free agent. And the move for Vinatieri is fraught with irony, given the rivalry between the Patriots and the Colts.

A 10-year veteran, Vinatieri, 33, has converted 263 of 321 field goal attempts and 367 of 374 extra point tries in 160 games. He recently visited with Green Bay officials but left without a contract.

Vinatieri ranks at No. 7 on ESPN.com's Top 50 unrestricted free agents list.

 
1. Great signing for the Colts. The ultimate clutch kicker.

1b. Horrible loss for the Pat's. They lost the ultimate clutch kicker.

2. No way the Pat's go after Vanderjagdt.

3. Dolphins will be better than Pats next season. ;)

So will Mike Vanderjagt be signing with the Patriots? Not sure of the fit after kicking in a dome so much...they keep talking Paul Endinger, but I don't see it.

Those were all effectively the same team. Believe me, I have a lot of respect for them in doing that. If the system that they used to build that team is as fundamentally sound as they say such that other teams are dumb not to follow it, they should be able to replicate it (and by that I mean field a consistently strong team, not win 3 championships in 4 years necessarily).

It was absolutely not the same team. This is a pretty common misconception. On offense Brady, Andruzzi and Light are the only three offense players to start on all three title teams. On defense you have Seymour, Vrabel, Willie, Bruschi and a combo of Phifer/Johnson (they were both kind of starters). Law was on all three title teams but he missed a good portion of the 04 season and didn't play in the playoffs that year. So counting the kickers (which means AV) you have 9/24 players that started on all three teams which means there was almost a 2/3's turnover from the first championship to the third. The first title was very much a veteran team while the third one had a very healthy dose of youngsters (Branch, Givens, Koppen, Samuel, Wilfork, Warren, Wilson, Graham etc.) that weren't on that first team.

Another mainstay out the door. By far the best kicker I have ever seen. As clutch as they come and also not afraid to make a tackle. He was well respected by his teammates and loved by the fans. The kick against the Raiders is probably the single greatest kick in NFL history. It would be virtually impossible to kick in worse conditions. Other great kicks were the Raider OT kick, the two Super Bowl winners, the winning boot against the Titans in zero degree weather and the long one against the Steelers in the 04 AFC championship game that tied the record for longest at Heinz. The one thing all these kicks had in common were they were done in playoff games and 5/6 were when the game was on the line.

Well, I truly don't know what's happening with the Pats this offseason. I fully understand the unwillingness to not overpay. Yet, these slots need to be filled as well as some other holes. Hopefully when the smoke clears this will all make sense but right now all you can do is keep repeating "in Bill we trust, in Bill we trust" because there is a lot of work to be done.

 
Despite a strong push, the Green Bay Packers lost out to the Indianapolis Colts on free agent kicker Adam Vinatieri Tuesday, a National Football League source said. The Packers were in the running for Vinatieri up until the last minute, but ultimately the clutch New England kicker decided he wanted to go to a team that plays indoors. The Packers, Patriots and Colts were the strongest players for Vinatieri, who visited Green Bay last weekend and had shown interest in coming to Green Bay.

According to the source, the Packers offered more than the five-year, $10 million contract Ryan Longwell received from the Minnesota Vikings, but Vinatieri accepted a deal believed to be worth slightly more. The Packers, the source said, had shown an inclination to go higher with their offer, but Vinatieri appeared most interested in kicking indoors. Terms of the deal Vinatieri signed with the Colts were not known.

Over the weekend, Vinatieri changed agents, picking Nevada-based Gary Uberstine, to handle negotiations, a source said. Previously he had been with Neil Cornrich, but Uberstine was the one who negotiated the deal with the Colts and spoke with the Packers and Patriots.

As opposed to the actual Bum Phillips saying, "He can take his’n and beat yourn; and he can take yourn and beat his’n.”

Colts sign away Patriots Super Bowl hero Vinatieri

The Indianapolis Colts are switching from the NFL's most accurate kicker to the best in the clutch.

Taking a key piece from its rival New England, Indianapolis agreed in principle to a deal with Adam Vinatieri, the Colts said Tuesday night. Vinatieri, who twice hit winning kicks in the Super Bowl for the Patriots, replaces former Pro Bowl kicker Mike Vanderjagt.

The deal was announced on the team's Web site, though terms were not immediately available. Messages left with the Patriots and agents for Vinatieri by The Associated Press were not immediately returned.

The Patriots allowed Vinatieri to test free agency rather than putting a franchise designation on him, which would have cost the team $3 million next season.

"It just didn't feel like the right thing to do," coach Bill Belichick said last month at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. "We considered all our options and decided not to tag anybody."

Vinatieri, 33, had been named the team's franchise player twice, including last year, when he was paid $2.5 million.

Vanderjagt spent all eight of his NFL seasons with the Colts after playing in the Canadian Football League. He scored a franchise record 995 points and made 217 career field goals in 248 attempts, the highest accuracy rate (87.5) in league history.

In 2003, Vanderjagt made all 37 of his field goal attempts, all 46 of his extra point attempts and set the NFL record by extending his consecutive field goals streak to 42.

But twice in his career he missed critical field goals in the playoffs. In January, he badly missed a 46-yarder in the closing seconds, which would have forced overtime with eventual Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh.

At Miami, in January 2000, he missed a 49-yarder wide right that would have won the game and sent the Colts into the second round of the playoffs.

Team president Bill Polian acknowledged last month it was unlikely the Colts would re-sign Vanderjagt, an unrestricted free agent.

You would know absolutely for sure that Manning is cursed and won't win the big one if his IDIOT KICKER goes to New England and wins the AFC Championship vs. Indy after Corey Dillon fumbles on a goal line run with a minute left to play, a Colt picks it up and runs it back, Peyton puts together a couple of passes to line Vinatieri up for a winning field goal and the most clutch kicker in NFL history who's been Peyton's nemesis for half a decade shanks a 45 yard FG wide right.

The Pats then win the Super Bowl. Manning retires with countless passing records, like his idol, Dan Marino, with no Super Bowl rings.

Do not get to excited he his a great kicker, but this in no way puts the colts over the hump.Pitt game the colts caught some breaks late in that game there oline got there butts whipped and the linebackers got burned.Get excited when you see some quality linebackers and oline getting signed. :banned:

 
Does something smell fishy to anyone else here? Why did AV fire his agent right before agreeing to terms? That doesn't happen very often, and when it does, it's because the agent won't associate his name with the final deal. So what's really going on here?

 
It's hard to believe NE would try to get by next year without Adam,especially after losing Givens to further weaken the offense,AND since long-term kicker contracts are usually the cheapest to take care of.

The "logic" of letting Vinatieri go is difficult to figure,since Edinger is the only proven "foul weather" kicker out there,and signing Vanderjagct would be hypocritical of the type of player the Pats like to acquire.

I've been a Pats fan a long time, and subscribe to the "In Bill We Trust"creed,but I dont see how letting Vinatieri go can improve NE's offense under any circumstance... :thumbdown:

So am I. This is a fantastic signing for the Colts since it's not only a great player but also damaging to the Patriots. It also is a smart move because the loss of Edge may make the Colts have to settle for more FG's.
 
According to sources familiar with the talks, Vinatieri would receive a $3.5 million signing bonus and $7.5 million over the first three years of the contract. The total length of the contract was unclear, though it could be five years.

Even taking away the "clutch" label (Vandy is the opposite of clutch), he's an upgrade because:1. He can kickoff - Vandy is awful at that. That could save a roster spot on the Colts that was used on a KO specialist.

2. He won't be a cancer in the locker room. He'd never say that another team is "ripe for the picking" before a playoff game.

but the bottom line is, biggest field goal of his life vandy choakedin the half-dozen or so HUGE field goals vin has tried, he nailed them all. He should have been the MVP of their first super bowl!

 
I don't recall Adam V being much better than Vandy w/kickoffs. In fact, don't kid yourself; he is not much of an upgrade over Vandy in most respects and (it sounds like) cost a lot more, which is troubling due to the Colts' cap being tight.

I think it's a great signing in that they got a stud PK instead of settling for "whoever." OK and yeah it's kinda nice to think NE might have to do that now. :) But I have to wonder if they should have spent that $$ elsewhere.
