Vince Young's got the "Super Dawg" in him...(article) (1 Viewer)

I should probably have posted this on the Mort/Vince thread, but that one has gotten a bit tedious. This is a great article on Vince, one of the best I've read in a while. Based on all the quotes from Reese, Fisher, Bulluck, Haynesworth, and Vince himself, I think even more that Mort is full of it and that the Titans are starting to see in Vince what Texas fans already have seen. I like this quote from Keith Bulluck:

"He looks like a rookie, man," said linebacker Keith Bulluck. "But a rookie with a very, very good upside. Just being an athlete, you can tell who can play and who cannot play. You get guys who are athletes but ain't got no 'dawg' in them. Then you have super athletes who have 'super dawg' in them. Young fella's got the 'super dawg.' "

Added defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth: "For a rookie with all the pressure and expectations, I think he's been incredible. He's a natural leader on the field."

Reese grins at the comments of the veterans. "They see it," he said. "They've drank the Vince Kool-Aid already, and maybe they don't even know it. Years ago, I was in the room one time with Muhammad Ali and Jimmy Brown, and they just had a look, an aura. When you're in that room, you know. Women that don't know sports from anything, they can walk into that room and immediately say, 'Who is that?' They know there's something special about that guy. That's Vince."

Looks like Vince will be playing some with 1st team O-line on Saturday and will play in 2nd and 3rd quarter. It will be fun to see how he does.

Titans unveil playing-time plan for preseason opener

By PAUL KUHARSKY

Staff Writer

CLARKSVILLE — Coach Jeff Fisher said he plans to play the Titans’ starters for all or most of the first half in the preseason opener Saturday night at LP Field and that rookie quarterback Vince Young can expect a little time with the first-team offensive line.

Fisher said he expects starting quarterback Billy Volek to exit the game in the second quarter.

“I’m expecting Billy to do well and I’d like to try to get Vince an opportunity to play behind the starting offensive line at some point towards the middle or the end of the second quarter,” Fisher said. “Vince will play the third quarter and then I’ll play Matt (Mauck) and hopefully Cody (Hodges) as well.”

There was the talk of his low score on the Wonderlic test, which had some shaking their heads. But on the first day of minicamp last spring, Chow called Fisher into the quarterbacks meeting. Young was sent to the blackboard and told to diagram a play, including its formation, protection and entire defense."He drew it like it was straight out of our playbook," Fisher said. "Then he turned and smiled at me and asked me if I had any questions."

The rest of the world will soon find out what all of us in Austin already know.

How is Reggie McNeal looking at QB at the pro level anyway? :D

Bow, wow, wow, yippe-oh, yippe-ay. Bow, wow, yippe-oh, yippe-ay.

What? This doesnt' happen to you guys often?

Does anyone honestly believe VY will flop as a pro quarterback?

I'm in the small but seemingly growing group that believes he will struggle mightily for his first year or two, but eventually, I see no reason why this guy doesn't have "anchor for perennial championship contender" written all over him. There's just nothing to dislike about this guy IMO.

He's got the tools, he's got the X factor, he's got the intangibles, sure he's a slow learner, but LJ was too....

Michael Vick comes to mind. All the tools but can't assemble the product. You've got to be able to read, understand and follow the directions. That will be his problem.

Vick lacks accuracy and is too short. The thing about Vince is that he has all those great assets you just can't teach like outstanding running ability, good arm and accuracy, good size, natural leadership ability, fierce desire to win, good work ethic, extreme poise under pressure, etc. So the only thing people latch onto to criticize him is that he's too dumb to learn complicated offenses or read defenses. I don't believe that is true, and besides, unlike the assets I mentioned above, those are things that can be taught and learned through experience. As far as weaknesses go, those are the easiest type to overcome. I think that over time, with game experience and repetition, he will eventually learn the offense and be able to read defenses well enough that, when combined with his other assets, he will be one of the top QB's in the league. I agree with Maurile, it is more a question of how long it will take than whether or not he will succeed, at least in my mind. His knowledge of the offense and of opposing defenses increased dramatically over the course of his 3 years at Texas, I see no reason why that won't be the case in the NFL also.
