Vincent Young wants to reclaim starting job (1 Viewer)

Quarterback Vince Young reportedly intents to work hard this offseason in hopes of reclaiming his starting job from Kerry Collins in Tennessee.

The Titans re-signed Collins to a two-year deal this offseason, an event that only further inspired Young.

"That decision has no bearing on Vince's thinking," agent Major Adams said Wednesday. "He is just trying to get himself together, not worrying about what they are doing with Kerry. That doesn't matter to him.

"Vince is not upset. He is not asking for a trade or anything. He loves the organization, loves [Titans owner] Bud Adams, and he wants to be in Tennessee," Adams added. "But he still wants to play, and is approaching this offseason like he's going to."

Exactly the attitude he should have. After a ROY season I believed he had a future in the league. Now, I'm skeptical. Hopefully, he gets his head on straight and helps TEN on the field soon.

Isn't this the attitude every player in the NFL should have? Shouldn't they all be working hard to get or keep their starting jobs? I guess it's good to hear he's at least finally doing what he's supposed to be doing.

This would be topic worthy if he came out and said something like, "Nah, I think I'll just kick back another year, collect my $$, watch Kerry play another season, then next year I'll play some ball when Kerry retires."

:fro: @ it being news/thread worthy for a player to want to start.

Not good that it even needed to be said imo.

If he can get his stuff together he would certainly have the ability to be explosive with CJ in the backfield. Teams are so overly conscious of where he is on the field it could certainly open things up for a guy with his scrambling ability. Should be interesting.

Young (like Leinart) is in the unfortunate position of being in a team that is too good and too old to wait on his development. Yes, some QBs come in right away and adapt well. Young is not in that category. I'm of the opinion - while many are not - that he can be a very good QB in the league. He has the talent, for sure. But unlike McNair, who had the benefit of being on a mediocre team while he learned how to play well in the NFL, Young is on a team with lots of talent that isn't getting any younger (Harper, KVB, Hope, Bulluck, Thornton, etc.) The offense is young, but the D - which is the bread and butter of the team - still has most of it's talent in guys that really only have a couple of peak years left.

Should be interested.

I feel Young is being shorted if that is the basis for leaving him on a bench. From my perspective, he showed plenty of ability to get wins for the Titans, and in fact he did so for a far less talented Titans team. I'd argue he got more wins than Kerry Collins would have in prior years. No, he's never shown he will compel the team to wins passing the ball... but I see that as being a lot different from being able to compel this team to wins with whatever it took. The reason Vince was benched (IMHO) was 95% maturity based when his ungodly bad decision to resist going back into a the first game of a season out of frustration coincided with a subsequent injury, which coincided with a winning streak by his successor. On his hesitance to go back into a game, it was just bizarre to me. I'll just never understand how a guy goes from ROY in his first season, to leading his team to the playoffs in his second season, to deciding he wants to quit in the first game of his 3rd season, in a hard fought game against a divisional foe. That made the mental/maturity piece of that act more confounding to me. Yet, with all of that said it's discounting Vince to question whether he can lead a veteran team to wins. Reading your post, the first guy I think of is Tarvaris Jackson, who may or may not ever be able to lead a team to wins at crunchtime. Vince Young is well beyond that question IMHO, even though he obviously poses equally important questions through his decision to quit on teammates.

I want 10 million dollars! Anyways, Collins sucks, so good for him. He should be able to take this job. Stop being such a wimp and get your head on straight.

By this report it doesn't sound like the Titans are feeling all that secure with Vince Young.

There is also the chance Tennessee will add a veteran quarterback after Simms signed in Denver. Kerry Collins is entrenched as the starter, and while Vince Young is the No. 2 quarterback, signing a veteran to come in at No. 3 and to push Young for the second job is possible. If the Titans can’t find the right quarterback in free agency, then the draft might be a possibility.

The veiled suicide/hiding with a gun/mental state of Young is probably the cherry on top, but the above post sums it up very well.

What Vince should be thinking about is what he's going to do next year after he's cut by Titans. The only reason he's still on the team right now is that the Titans would take a $10M cap hit if he were cut. There's also a chance he doesn't make it past June 1st with the Titans.

Send his Crazy ### to Detroit.

He's waaay more talented then anybody they have and the New Coach is familiar with him.

Free agent quarterback Patrick Ramsey visited the Titans today.

If signed, Ramsey could compete with Vince Young for the No. 2 job behind Kerry Collins, who signed a new two-year, $14 million deal with the Titans earlier this month.

If they sign him, VY is gone June 1st.
Just to be clear while not intended to be a shot, the whole June 1st thing is obsolete this year because at least for the time being next year is an uncapped year, meaning there is no option to split any remaining signing bonus money between this year and next like teams had the opportunity to do in years past. Any player cut this season, whether it be before or after June 1st, their entire remaining bonus money owed would accelerate to this year's cap.Just an FYI to all.

No problem. I think a lot of people may be overlooking that small faction this offseason.

In fact, your post prompted me to post that tidbit in the "Important Offseason Dates To Remember" thread that's pinned at the top of the topics page, so thank you in return.

Steve Spurrier ruined Patrick Ramsey.
VY > Patrick freakin' Ramsey

The issue is his contract and the Titans would love to get him off their books. That said, he'll be a Titan this year as they have no incentive to cut him until next year.
