VPN recommendations ? (1 Viewer)

As most people in these crazy times, I am trying to save money by some cost cutting.  I recently moved and decided not to get cable.  I stream a tv service on my Firestick for the past few months.  However, recently certain stations, like ESPN I can not access. It says, "This channel requires a VPN to watch!"  I get this message with a few other channels, HBO, Showtime, NBAtv, and History channel to name a few.

I would like to be able to use the VPN on my Firestick and laptop.  

I heard about Cyberghost, which has a price of $99 for every 3 years, plus 2 months free.  Anybody use this service?  Another one you recommend?

Price is important, but so is ease of use.  I am a total novice when it comes to computers and all tech for that matter.

Nord VPN - Does not support Amazon Fire TV devices.  Sometimes causes DNS issues.

Realistically no, technically yes, your work VPN would recognize that it's going onto a VPN and not allow the connection but a VPN on VPN would just be forwarding a forward.

instead you would use VPN on the device itself and most VPN services will give you multiple device access for their standard single fee. your work VPN is on your laptop. putting a different VPN on another device, like a firestick or AppleTV or even on your phone, is a separate connection.

It may vary depending on VPNs, but I have to turn off my network VPN in order to connect to my work VPN. I also have VPN software installed on some individual devices so that I can use them while the network VPN is down.

Just switched over from IPVanish to Nord. Really like Nord a lot better since their throughput speeds are way better than IPVanish and the cost is cheaper too. Also don’t have nearly the amount of drops I had with IPVanish fwiw.

It depends how it's used.

Yes it will work no doubt it's just encrypted twice.

For work, you're probably connecting to a server or firewall device that allows or disallows access so if the second VPN is hiding your identity, you'll probably be blocked unrecognizable.

I have never noticed any speed issues when using Private Internet Access. I game and torrent with VPN's

Express VPN - Works well with Amazon Fire TV devices. Fast.

I had a bad experience with ExpressVPN, and it seems I wasn't alone. We went overseas last year, and I subscribed to ExpressVPN for a month. When we got home, I cancelled -- or I thought I did.

ExpressVPN has a button that says, "Turn Off Automatic Renewal." I clicked that, and it asked if I was sure. I clicked it again. There's a third screen that says, "Turn off automatic renewal," and "Be sure to make a payment before (Month, Day, Year) to keep your subscription active." That's where most people (me included) assume renewal has been turned off. Nope! You have to click "Turn Off Automatic Renewal" a THIRD time in order to truly turn it off. Even though I scan our credit card charges every month, I somehow missed it, and ExpressVPN charged me for several months before I noticed it. There are numerous Reddit threads about the same thing happening to others. It's pretty shady.

Interesting - do you remember which are which off the top of your head?

It’s random within each region. There is a decent amount of fluctuation mostly on download speeds. I keep changing them until I find a satisfactory server via speed test

I am currently using Nord on my router. It's finicky but it works. Until a few months ago, I was using Express on the router; also finicky. As of a few months ago, Nord was significantly faster on the router. Express had some real speed issues for me for about a month and I ended up switching back to Nord.

Engadget rates Proton as the best VPN.

I've read a few articles on the Proton suite gaining in favor among tech heads. Not just for VPN but email, storage, etc. It's becoming a real competitor to Google it seems (for that sort of stuff anyway).

Interesting. Curious as to what their speeds are like versus Nord. Nord has been better for me than other VPN providers, but I wish it were still better considering I have 2 Gb/2 Gb service and I can get upwards of 700 Gb/700 Gb on most of their servers

Anyone using these VPNs on the your router?

I pretty much only run VPNs on the router. Flash firmware specifically to have the kill-switch option. The problem with running the VPN on a device or as a daemon/service is that if it crashes, the rest of the system is exposed, even if just briefly until the software killswitch kicks in. I'd rather have the killswitch on the hardware and have the router end all the traffic as soon as the tunnel drops.
