Waiting in the Wings (QB) (1 Viewer)

With the Vick situation going on (and having him in my dynasty league - ), it got me looking at QB situations a little closer. Looking at the current depth charts, which backups have the chance of winning the job later in the year, or start for next year? I bolded the teams that I think fall into the category of seeing a QB change in the next two years, either based on the QB of the future being drafted, the age of the current QB, injury concerns, QB battle at training camp, etc (I have 14 teams falling into those categories). I figure the shark pool is the best place for this discussion and input...I am sure there are many of us that might need QB help for the next few years.

ARZ M. Leinart K. Warner

ATL M. Vick J. Harrington - I don't think the QB of the future is currently on the team at this point

BAL S. McNair K. Boller - alway an injury concern when you mention McNair

BUF J. Losman C. Nall T. Edwards - Not so sure Buffalo has answered the QB guestion yet

CAR J. Delhomme D. Carr - Talk of Delhomme's performance going down the last few years

CHI R. Grossman B. Griese

CIN C. Palmer D. Johnson

CLE C. Frye B. Quinn D. Anderson - Quinn is the future, but when will he start?

DAL T. Romo B. Johnson

DEN J. Cutler P. Ramsey

DET J. Kitna D. Orlovsky D. Stanton - Kitna is not the future, but the short term solution

GB B. Favre A. Rodgers - It is only a matter of time for Farve

HOU M. Schaub S. Rosenfels

IND P. Manning J. Sorgi

JAX B. Leftwich D. Garrard - seems to be rubblings about Leftwich and Del Rio

KC B. Croyle D. Huard - training camp could determine the starter?

MIA T. Green C. Lemon J Beck - Trent Green is the short term solution

MIN T. Jackson B. Bollinger - Is Jackson on a short leash?

NE T. Brady M. Cassel

NO D. Brees J. Martin

NYG E. Manning A. Wright T. Hasselbeck

NYJ C. Pennington K. Clemens - Pennington has health issues

OAK J. McCown J. Russell - Waiting on Russell to start

PHI D. McNabb A. Feeley K. Kolb

PIT B. Roethlisberger C. Batch

SD P. Rivers B. Volek

SF A. Smith T. Dilfer

SEA M. Hasselbeck S. Wallace

STL M. Bulger G. Frerotte

TEN V. Young K. Collins

TB J. Garcia B. Gradkowski C. Simms - Garcia is 37

WAS J. Campbell M. Brunell

Beck will be starting next year as Green is used as the stop gap. Beck may even see action earlier depending on how the season plays out in Miami. If they are out of a playoff spot Beck will be in.

Out of your bolded list, the backups with the best mix of talent and possible future opportunity are:

- Trent Edwards (Bills)

- Kellen Clemens (Jets)

Outside of JaMarcuss Russell and Brady Quinn who are the obvious future of course.

For the future i think you need to consider Stanton and the Lions... Kitna wont be around much longer and word from lions camp is that Martz is working his magic on Stanton. I have never been a Stanton fan (AT ALL...HATE MSU), but I think you do have to look there. He will be surrounded by weapons for years to come...(Roy & CJ at the least).

Rumor has it there may be a trade market for Matt Cassel next season. Nothing approaching the level of Schaub, but I've heard that the Patriots think they can potentially get a 5th round pick for him. There's no reason to assume he'll be given a starting job, but he's definitely a guy to consider as a long-term hold in deep leagues if he's still available.

Trent Edwards is another interesting player. I've picked him up in a couple leagues. As a Stanford homer, I can't emphasize enough how horrible the supporting cast has been the past few seasons. They were truly awful. Pitiful OL. Injured WRs. Edwards had no chance to succeed. That said, he was a five star recruit out of high school and the early buzz is good out of Buffalo. Losman is hardly bulletproof at this point, so it's a situation to monitor.

I also think the following players have a chance to emerge as starters:

David Carr - Awful in Houston, but you never know.

Kellen Clemens - High pick. Should get a shot eventually. Pennington hasn't been durable.

Aaron Rodgers - As of right now, he still looks like Favre's eventual replacement.

John Beck - Too high of a pick not to get a shot eventually.

Kevin Kolb - See: John Beck

Drew Stanton - See: John Beck

Kyle Boller - Longshot, but he's shown some flashes here and there.

And finally, I concur that Griese could get a shot. I still think he's better than a handful of guys who are starting in the league right now.

Call me a homer but Gutierrez and Cassell both intrigue me, if I were a GM I'd see what they wanted for one of em'.

Favre and Payton aside, I'm a bit concerned Brady's "due" for an injury but then again I hate that phrase.

Rodgers is still the Packers "future QB" but I believe this is the last year that he can prove it in camps/pre-season.

The Packers didn't draft a QB this year.

Cassel's a good name to drop, but there's a deep sleeper (no not Nall, easy Construxboy.... :lmao: ).

John Navarre.

He's buried right now, but not as deep as some might think. All he has to do is outplay Jim Sorgi to get a shot at the #2 spot in Indy. If Tarik Glenn really does retire and open Peyton up to some extra pounding this year, there is a greater chance of him getting injured and the #2 QB for the Colts having to play.

Is it probable? No. But no one is talking about Navarre, and in super-deep leagues people should know his name.

The Phins drafting Beck and signing Green tells you everything they have planned for Cleo ...I agree with all other picks other than maybe Wallace ...

Now, I know this is a super, SUPER longshot, but suppose Harrington starts and the Falcons don't bring anyone in, and Harrington sucks as usual loses 4 out of the first 6, could anyone see DJ Shockley getting a shot? He lacks ideal size for a QB but is an excellent scrambler with great speed, meaning the Falcons could resurrect the Vick runs from their playbook. Does anyone give him a shot at all?

Anyone like Ryan Fitzpatrick as a future QB? In 2005, he played 4 games, threw for 777 yards, 4 tds, and 8 ints, and rushed for 64 yards and 2 tds.

Obviously, he is third behind a franchise QB and a QB with 12 years experience, but is his future bright?

I have read that GMs are interested when his deal expires ... not sure where I read it tho ...

No chance. The Falcons are DEFINITELY bringing someone in. Whether it's Culpepper/LeFors/vet QB to compete with Harrington from what I've heard.but I'll eat crow if it happens......

A couple of guys I am keeping an eye on are:

Sage Rosenfels - produced when given opportunity and is behind an unproven QB ... even though the Texans invested heavily in Schaub

AJ Feeley - Kolb might be a little too raw for if/when McNabb misses a game or three

Cleo Lemon - Wonder about Beck and I think Green will not last long as many think
