Waiver Wire Defense Week 4 (1 Viewer)

I have heard good things about TENN but i don't think the Jets are as terrible as we all thought they would be this year. Anyone see their games and think Tenn is a solid play?
I picked up the Tenn D over the weekend but honestly don't know much about the unit. The Bills got zero pressure on Geno (0 sacks, 2 qb hits) and the key to success is obviously forcing the rookie qb to make mistakes. That being said, Geno still threw 2 picks and both looked bad. Can he be relied on to make a 50 yd td and 70 yd td each week? I wouldn think not. Will Tenn be able to get pressure on Geno?

Ill probably roll with Tenn this week, but I still want the KC def...
I don't know how their defense is playing well with mostly the same lousy personnel (Gregg Williams?) and don't expect it to last but they should be fine at home vs the Jets.

The Bills were missing their top 3 CB's and 4 of their best 5 DB's.

I'd expect a very similar game to Bucs-Jets in Week 1.

Sticking with Dallas again this week. Had a decent amount of sacks and they are 2nd in scoring in my league.SD has been giving up about 7 points to defenses while Dallas has averaged about 15. If I can get 8-12 points this weekend from them I will be happy.

Maybe Cardinals vs. rookie Glennon.
this seems like a trap game. i doubt they give him the reigns and put him in positions to not mess up. like someone else posted they may give martin plenty of carries this game.

i actually picked up the bucs vs az who is doing the west to east coast thing and who have been pretty solid regardless

Tenn D was one of the highest scoring in the second half of last season, though much of it was of the boom or bust quality.

Not really a WW WDIS question, but what is everyone doing with 49ers D/ST? Holding on to them or dropping them? I have Chiefs D/ST, and hanging on to 49ers due to fact I drafted them before the last few rounds thinking they'd be good.

Sorry this doesn't really answer your question but this is why I never draft "good" defenses because I feel the obligation to hang onto them.

picked up kc and indy. may run with the 2 of them for the rest of the year.
Which are you going with this week? I own both as well and am thinking about going with Indy due to being a Giants fan, but every time I mix homerism and fantasy football I usually pay the price.

kc seems legit, plus they get the raiders twice, 1 in the playoffs, browns, bills, giants this week isnt horrible, chargers, skins and denver twice.

gonna play indy this week

To those mentioning how Indy vs. Jax is a trap game, I'd like to add that the Colts generally don't fare too well vs. Jax:

Points scored by Indy D vs Jax :

2012 Wk 10: 13

2012 Wk 3: 1

2011: Wk 17: 4

2011 Wk 10: 3

2010 Wk 15: 9

2010 Wk 4: 0

Indy is only the 22nd D in FF points scored this year so far.

The Colts beat Jax @ Jacksonville last year 27-10.
I was going to say, the Colts DST scored 27 points in my league against the Jags in week 10 last season.

This was just brought to my attention..

Chargers LT King Dunlap (concussion) did not practice Wednesday.
Dunlap exited last week's loss to the Titans late in the fourth quarter with the concussion. LG Chad Rinehart (foot) has already been ruled out for this week against the Cowboys, while RG Jeromey Clary (clavicle) also isn't practicing this week. Michael Harris is Dunlap's backup. If you recall, Harris gave up ten sacks last season. DeMarcus Ware may have a field day.
Bump DAL DST?

Not getting Glennon'd this week.

Got Hoyer'd last week.
Despite Hoyer (a veteran) putting up a lot of points, he still threw 3 picks and Minnesota's Defense had a solid week. At the very least, TB/ARI will be a low scoring affair, and the potential is there for things to get very ugly for the rookie.

I was bored and decided to filter out the inaccurate "experts" as it pertains to defenses on fantasypros.com, instead choosing to view the choices of the top 10 most accurate experts to date (includes FBG's Maurile Tremblay) . What I found was interesting. A large majority of the more accurate experts (including Tremblay) have TEN ranked higher than just about everyone else.

I think I agree with those saying Indy is a trap this week. It's still early enough in the season for Jax to put up a fight at home against a division foe.

DAL has been very underrated this year. They are the number #3 DEF in my league right now and I'm very glad to have been the beneficiary of their production so far. No brainer this week vs. SD and that mess of an OL.

That is definitely a pitfall of drafting D/ST early. In my case, I claimed the 49ers D/ST off waivers when the owner who drafted them at 10.08 gave up on them after two weeks. I am going to hold my nose and start them tonight at St. Louis. I'm counting on the trend of sloppy play on Thursday nights to generate some turnovers and keep the score low.

spencer out for year

Yahoo has my leftover D (Minn) from last week projected to get 17.38 this week against Pitt, in London no less. Anybody buying this?

It's probably skewed by the titanic number of turnovers the Steelers had against Chicago. I think Minnesota will be all right but unexceptional unless Ben gifts them a pick-6. Heath Miller being closer to a full workload probably helps both in terms of pass protection and an outlet for Ben in panic mode, and Bell might get every carry with how often Dwyer, Redman, and Felix Jones have fumbled this year. I'm using Minnesota in one league, but going with Tennessee in two others.

Spencer has played sparingly as it is.

For people that want to get out ahead of this week, after their week 4 BYE, Carolina has a pretty nice schedule lined up.

week 5 ARI

week 6 MIN

week 7 STL

week 8 TB

ARI and MIN are both top 10 at giving up points. STL is tied for 11th, and TB is currently 20th, but by then we should have a read on Glennon as a starting QB.

Spencer only appeared in one game this season and didn't play particularly well in it. I'm worried about their depth and wearing down over the course of the season, but the Spencer news makes no difference right now.

Excellent suggestions by the OP. I have one more to add for consideration:

Min vs. Pit -- The Vikes didn't live up to their billing in Week 3 but get a 2nd straight bad offense this week...if you bought them last week you can possibly stick with them one more week. They gave up points but still had a decent outing vs. CLE.
I snagged Min, and kicked Houston to the curb.

I get what you guys are saying about Indy vs Jax. Definitely the classic trap game for mediocre D versus a bad offense but a division rival.....but man Jax has to be regarded as the worst offense in the league, especially if Gabbert is back under center. Don't see how I can pass that up.

The only reason I would think trap game has more to do with Gore actually running well. Gore isn't the RB he once was, but if he can have a good game against Indy, then maybe MJD has solid game. Indy's run D hasn't been good in a long time. If MJD has a good game, then Indy might not get a lot of turnovers. Jax scored 17 and had almost 300 yards. In some leagues, Seattle did OK, not as well as expected and Indy's D is not Seattle.

Nice pull. I'm still amazed they fared so well against the giants last week with the entire secondary depleted, but an elite pass rush will get you far.

I'm liking tenn at home against nyj this week.
So do essentially all of the most accurate defense experts to date. They're going under the radar for sure, and as a Jets homer, I'm starting them over the likes of BAL, IND and ARI.
I had Tennessee last year and for whatever reason I got trapped by the experts pick of Detroit against Arizona (Stafford 18 interceptions killed that play) and dropped Tennessee when they were playing the Jets last year. I watched that whole game because of CJ1k and while it was Sanchez, the Tenn D dominated that game. If I had left Tenn in, I was in the championship game, so I am starting Tenn this week against the Jets.

That said, in the league I was able to pickup KC, Tenn was on the wire and I didn't pick them up. I like KC much better given the pressure KC will get on Eli. I expect that the Giants will fall behind again and the points could roll in, especially at KC. I also like Baltimore against the Bills, they are playing well now.

All you people waiting till week 4 to pick your week 4 defense are losing out to the rest of us grabbing our week 5 defense (because we grabbed week 4 in week 3).
Are you serious Mat? I play in leagues with 14-15 man rosters, you can't hoard 2 defenses in those.

Now on Mat's larger point which got overlooked, I want to suggest if Carolina is available in any of your leagues that you pick them up now. They have juicy match ups for the next 3-4 weeks after the bye and for a while you won't really need to worry about which defense you start.

My problem this week is there are so many. I want to know if folks feel better about New Orleans or Indy this weekend?

I think I would lean Indy, then New Orleans, AZ is interesting and TN is solid but just sits on that WW every week. I'm more concerned about picking the wrong one and watching all the others score.

Good post MOP,

I only play in 3 leagues. I got Indy in 2 leagues and the other is New Orleans, so I'm lockstep with your recommendation.

I think it's important to lock up defenses going forward, if you can. I'm shedding some fairly valuable bench players to do this. It's not easy to make that call, but going forward, I expect a lot more competition for the prime rent-a-defenses.

In one league, I picked up Atlanta who gets the Jets in week 5. In another I picked up the Rams defense who gets to play JAX at home. Pretty much you should pick up and start any team against JAX. They are a lot more valuable than a bench player you will rarely use.

Just a heads up to those starting the Vikings. They are without 2 starting DBs this week. I just can't trust them with Cassel starting and likely giving the Steelers good field position every drive. With their starting DBs last week, they were lit up by the Browns. I'm bailing and rolling with Tenn at home vs the Jets.
