Waiver Wire Defense Week 9 (1 Viewer)

I searched and went back 4 pages, and didn't see one. Feel free to link me if I missed it.

Currently sitting on BUF, but you never know when Favre is going to have one of his huge days and we substract for high scores given up.

ATL looks like a good matchup, but they rarely generate any points regardless of matchup.

NYJ, like the Falcons have only one week where they put up meaningful fantasy points and just gave up 24 to the Chiefs.

WAS vs PIT could be a defensive, low scoring affair, but again, they haven't done much fantasywise this year.

Anyone got any good ideas here?

I picked up CLE. Theyve been a solid defense this year with the addition of Rogers and play a bad offensive team in BAL at home. Picking up a defense playing at home is always an important factor IMO.

It's worth a thought, but BAL put up 28 points on them in week 3 and only look like they're getting better on offense. Not sure about this one. I do agree with the home part though, wasn't really taking that into account.

IIRC, the Ravens were able to put up 28 points since they had a very short field on almost every occasion. May have been due to Cleveland's lackluster offense or turnovers - not sure though.I'm also playing Cleveland on the home/divisional rivalry front, but not expecting huge things.

The options are so bad this week, I may pick up Atlanta just to root for the home team a little extra. Seems like a fairly safe 5 points or so.

In real large leagues the Rams might be worth a look. They've been playing better defensively and are at home. Plus Warner will give up some sacks.

Can't say I really trust them, though, because I could see the Cardinals dropping about 40 points on them in a blink but if you're up against it in a real large league maybe they're worth a look.

This has been a better defense over the last few weeks. And the home thing is a big difference. Atlanta was my 2nd choice but believe it or not Oakland hasnt given up a ton of points to opposing defenses. I guess cuz they run so much theres not as much opportunity for turnovers. Plus the fact Oakland is home made me shy away from them even more.

Given my league's scoring, the Colts are actually listed as a better play than the Brownsb according to Dodds projections. Is there no mention of the Colts thus far because people don't expect them to be available, to be a good play, or both?

I hate DST by committee, someone remind me to draft a stud defense next year.

Amen. I do this every year, but it's so hard to tell the studs at draft time. For my league, the Colts are not on the wire. A lot of people holding multiple Ds for some reason this year. I think I may just stick with BUF after all, just saw that Favre has thrown multiple picks in 4 of 7 games, and it looks like Parrish is back.

It is probably just a good a play as any. Hell, Farve is the reason I dumped the Jets defense. I got sick of watching his Pick 6s screw my team.

like the vikings and chargers ? :puke:

What about the Colts. They are home . Sanders is back. Cassel tends to take alot of sacks. What do you guys think?
I am running them in 2 leagues.- Their backs are to the wall- They are at home against the hated Patriots- Sanders is back- Cassel can throw some INTs and if he's off he can hand over some points- Patriots are a bit banged up especially at running backWish Jackson hadn't gone down.

How about JAX? Have not generated much so far, but matchups for next two weeks are @CIN and @DET...can't get much better than that (in theory at least). Only thing I don't like is they are both road games, FWIW.

the question is...who is the better pickup: Jax (Bengals, Lions, Titans) or Ari (Rams, 49ers, Seahawks) for the next 3 weeks.

They both have great mathchups. Leaning towards Arizona.

Anyone else look at this?

Ari definitely has a better playoff schedule

I just don't think they're going to be on too many wires, maybe it's just my league. My question is more between CLE or ATL at this point, and if either of those is a better option than BUF.ETA, to answer your question, I like JAX

Depends on your roster requirements. We have 12 teams and only 16 players per roster. So, most owners only carry 1 def.

Both those are taken in my league but Id lean towards ARI as they seem to be a better attacking, turnover fueled fantasy defense.

Since Haslett has taken over, the Rams have been one of the top scoring defenses in my league.I just picked them up, they have a sweet schedule for the rest of the season.I'm not expecting a ton, but if you need a defense, I think they are worth a shot.

Wasn't trying to suggest one of "those" type comments.

I also picked up the Rams Def this week - The last three weeks they have scored 13 fantasy pts @Was, 11 fantasy pts vs Dallas and 10 fantasy pts @NE. The next 8 weeks is awesome: vs AZ, @NYJ, @SF, vs CHI, vs MIA, @ AZ, vs SEA and vs SFThe Rams Def could be a good play this week - In Week 4, the Jets vs AZ, NYJ sacked Warner 5 times intercepted him 3 times, had 4 fumble recoveries and a defensive TD - The Jets were up 34-0 and went into a prevent defense that allowed Warner his points in the second half. If there was going to be an upset this week, it will be the Rams beating the Cardinals. This coming from a 49er fan that hates the Rams.

 STL/SF/SEA next 3 games looks pretty sweet.
AZ hasn't been on the waiver wire in my leagues since, well about week 2 after they lit it up week 1. They are the #10 ranked Def in my scoring.
They are likely available in many leagues especially those with a short bench. They are the #11 DST in my league and coming off a bye week + the Panthers game = available.

I agree the Rams have been a nice surprise of late but I really don't like the two games vs. the Cards. The AZ offense is lighting it up and you never know what extra motivation playing the Rams might give Kurt.

With all of this talk in mind, are any defenses a must start or do some of you just play waiver wire every week? What defenses would you not sit?

I got JAX this week in an 8-team league but would expect them to be gone in 10+.

In a 12-teamer, I ran w/ Wash. the last 3 weeks, a stretch I thought would be great but turned out merely okay -- 12, 2 and 9 points in my ESPN system -- but with options that don't look noticeably stronger on the WW (NYJ, BUF) I think I'll keep WSH for one more week. After that, I'll be looking more towards playoff schedules anyway.

I just grabed Jax for this week. Have Pitt as my primary Def in my 12 Team league!!I figure Cinn can give up the ball a few more times!!

How big is the loss of CB Marlin Jackson?
Just depends on how quickly Darth Bill can setup a gameplan to exploit it. Hayden is gtg on one side, and Jennings has started to show improvement. I'm worried about them getting spread out in 3 wides and Hughes coming on in the nickle/dime and how Moss/Welker will be covered in the short quarter of the field. If I'm Darth Bill that's exactly what I go with, lots of 3 wides and throw the short stuff for YAC. /shrug. I'm rolling with them in 1 league, maybe 2 (debating). I think they'll be fine as if they keep throwing the short stuff as I even advice, eventually Sanders/Bracket (guys who really have seen the Pats a TON) will eventually jump one and return it for a TD.I guess my "pimping" of the Colts is that it seems to be a very good defense when facing a team that isn't on top of the run game. If the Pats don't gash the Colts early with the run, could be a LONG day for Cassel and a great pt production for the Colts.

I'm going with Clevland and hope that Flacco has a day like Eli had against the Browns plus we get pts for holding teams under a certain number of pts and I don't think Balt puts up that many this week.

I have a trade in the works, giving up the Titans D for Deangelo Williams. My thinking is that the Titans schedule is not hugely favorable going forward (esp. according to FBG SOS calculations) and from here on out a combo of StL, Indy, and Miami is pretty stellar off of the WW. Miami especially is a great D to target from Weeks 13-17.

Personally I'm going for the Jags and Colts in my leagues, but an option not mentioned is Houston at Minnesota. The offense is doing well, and Frerotte gives up both TOs and sacks.

Yeah, there was a bit of sarcasm there. Still it seems like you are reasonably safe going with either Baltimore, Pittsburgh, or Tampa Bay nearly every year.
:goodposting: Tampa and Pittsburgh usually end up as solid d's and usually don't come with a heavy price tag. :hifive:
If you mean 1 or 2 of these 3 is a good defense every year I think I agree.Fantasy rankings (CBS scoring) for these 3 defense over the past 5 years:

2007

BAL 21

PIT 5

TB 4

2006

BAL 1

PIT 9

TB 29

2005

BAL 12

I picked up AZ-D for this week & possibly beyond. I've been playing Def by committee & got hosed the past few weeks with Wash-D. Hopefully the Cards weak schedule will work out.

I really like the Texans this week as well. Frerotte is immobile, throws a lot of picks, and the Vikings special teams is anything but that. They surrendered 2 special teams TD's to New Orleans (and almost a 3rd) as well as 2 def/ST TD's to Chicago (and almost a 3rd).
