Waiver Wire guys who are surprising in camp (1 Viewer)

Tick

Footballguy
Every offseason, some guys come out of nowhere. Last year, we got some buzz in training camps that Cotchery and Colston (and Roman Harper) were possible surprise starters with a chance to do something. A number of years ago, everyone assumed Skip Hicks would start at RB for Washington, but Stephen Davis surprised in camp and won the job en route to a monster season.

The Shark Pool is the best place to find out about these gems that could be picked up for beans... but it's also reached a level of traffic that makes it impossible to keep up with all the threads.

I'm hoping this will be a thread where these types of posts can be collected.

So...

DeDe Dorsey is currently being talked about as a possible RBBC guy in Indianapolis.

Ahmad Bradshaw is getting some good reviews for the Giants and could sneak into the rotation of RBBC there.

Bobby Wade is currently a starter at WR for Minnesota.

ESPN's Matt Mosley has a friend in the Chargers' scouting department. According to Mosley's source, the Chargers were thrilled when they drafted Craig Davis, and Davis was better than advertised in the team's first mini-camp. Given that he was a first-round pick, he's obviously nowhere near as under-the-radar as Colston was last year. But I think he's a favorite to start opposite V.Jackson this season, which gives him late-round fantasy value. (On the downside, I doubt he'll get many red-zone looks.)

While it doesn't fit the title, this is still the sort of thing I was thinking of - Davis went relatively late in dynasty rookie drafts given his pre-draft grades and the depth chart at WR for San Diego. Hearing that he's impressing means he's even more undervalued. While you can't get him off the waiver wire, you might be able to trade for him before people catch up.

Yeah, but positive reports about first & second rounders are generally meaningless. For example, I remember the same being said about Chad Jackson last year.

Do you treat public statements by coaches differently from private statements by scouts?

Hester and Hairston were a couple from last week
From here:
Hester’s outstanding performance was the highlight of minicamp. Splitting out wide and also lining up in the slot and in the backfield, he displayed excellent hands, unmatched explosiveness and a rare burst while running after the catch.

“I thought he picked it up fairly quick,” said coach Lovie Smith. “He looked comfortable from Day 1 lining up as a receiver, and we know when he gets his hands on the ball he’s definitely comfortable with it. I’m excited about what he’ll bring to our offense this year.”

I think he's saying how it's almost habitual that a team's reporter, coach, (everyone) will praise the 1st and 2nd rounders after the first minicamp. An expected next step of sorts. If so, he has a point yet I also appreciate all news posted

Ahmad Bradshaw is getting some good reviews for the Giants and could sneak into the rotation of RBBC there.
This board loves him more than most. I've heard more about their WRs than Ahmad. http://blogs.msg.com/ralph_vacchiano/

7a. RB Ahmad Bradshaw -- He's still a longshot to have any significant impact, but the small running back showed he's got speed and some impressive cut-back ability. He was caught in the backfield a little too often, but when he wasn't he proved he has plenty of moves.

2. WR Steve Smith -- The most polished player in the class. He has terrific speed and his routes seemed to be very precise. Best of all, he caught every ball thrown in his vicinity, which wasn't easy considering the passes weren't exactly coming from NFL-caliber quarterbacks.

5. TE Kevin Boss -- He looked a lot like Jeremy Shockey with his ability to catch passes and turn them up the middle for big gains. He caught everything and he flashed some impressive speed. It's his blocking, though, that will get him on the field and that won't be evident until the contact is turned up.

Also WR Marco Thomas an undrafted free agent is getting some love. He must look very good because any mention of him and you'd swear the reporter is stating all he could dig up on this "unknown" and is at a loss as to what to say.

The RB I've heard Bradshaw is competing with is Ryan Grant. He was on their PS. Most forget Ward is returning and barely played in 06. It'll be tough for Bradshaw or Grant to beat out Ward. Ward's solid on ST and fills any role asked of him in the backfield. IMO Ward will have to have "lost a step" for one of them to beat him out. We're likely looking at 4 RBs on roster? PS? type Qs Coughlin will have to consider.

Jerry Rice is talking to/mentorring David Ball over the phone. (suntimes)

Ball's first day in practice supposedly he dropped the first two passes and refused to say he was nervous had jitters or any other excuse. Supposedly, he didn't drop one the rest of the day. Lovie praised his hands after that day(Chicagosports.com)

Day 2 he laid out for two diving catches on the sidelines and naturally caught everyone's attention. Later he leaped real high and snagged an overthrown "uncatchable" ball and scored a TD getting the DB hollerred at for not finishing.

I don't agree that he's competing with Hass for a final roster spot. I think he plays. I can't read an article about him and his past or how he's doing and not think about all the other undrafted free agents that did very well. Something real special going on there.

Always one of the better preseason players, Tim Carter, took Braylon Edwards place for a day(forget why Braylon wasn't there) and has been playing in the slot too. Looks like he's 3rd and Wilson is 4th WR

Curtis Martin has been working out twice a week at the Jets' training facility and has maintained his playing weight of 206 pounds. "I'm just keeping my options open and just trying to make sure I stay in shape," Martin told the NY Daily News.

I don't have a link, but I heard some rumors about Quinton Ganther getting first team looks in Tennessee...
From the Tennessean: (also, discusses Gage) Link
More work: In White's absence, second-year pro Quinton Ganther has split carries with Chris Henry and Dontrell Moore. Fisher said Ganther, a seventh-round pick last year, has improved.

"He is cutting better and seeing things better, so this is a good opportunity for him,'' Fisher said.

Titans running back LenDale White watched practice Thursday with ice strapped to the back of his left leg, an injured hamstring to blame.

Meanwhile, the wide-eyed rookie [Henry] who got extra work because of White's absence, received this light-hearted message from some of his defensive teammates: Cool it.
Later in the article about White:
"Everybody knows LenDale's attitude — he is kind of nonchalant, he kind of feels like once he gets out there he is going to do it," linebacker Keith Bulluck said. "Well, he has shown signs, but he hasn't shown everything that I feel he is capable of doing, and right now he is hurt. So we'll just have to wait and see.

"At this level, if you can perform and be consistent and do everything that you say you can do, nobody will be able to say anything to you. But at the end of the day it is up to him to perform, but it is hard for him to perform when he is hurt."
Later about Henry:
In the NFL, where offseason work is supposed to be as close to contact-free as possible, Henry already has rubbed some of his defensive teammates the wrong way because he's been running with his head down.
Of course, White and Henry are the frontrunners for the job but they are not impressing as of yet and Ganther is getting time with the first team in White's absence. Looks like 3rd string behind two very questionable backs.

James Jones, Packers

One of those young guys still learning what to expect is Jones, who has made a favorable first impression similar to Jennings last season.

While it would be unfair to Jones to heap those kinds of expectations on him, he does exhibit a physical development to his body and a fluidity to his movements that suggest a maturity beyond his rookie status. Backup quarterback Aaron Rodgers noted he was impressed with Jones' hands and his body control, already reading his body language as far as how he runs his routes.

"He always catches the ball extended away from his body," McCarthy said. "That's what you're always trying to teach young guys, and he does it extremely natural. I think the young man has a bright future."

Brandon Williams, 49ers

He has gotten off to a great start. Williams was the most standout player in the team's mandatory three-day minicamp that ended Sunday. Last year's third-round pick from Wisconsin dominated team scrimmages in the four practices and probably caught more than 30 passes.

Quarterback Alex Smith attributes Williams' improvement from last year to knowing the offense, his teammates and surroundings better.

Williams, who's fighting for a roster spot after the team signed Ashley Lelie, traded for Darrell Jackson and drafted Washington State player and San Francisco native Jason Hill in the third round last weekend, attributes his improvement to better route-running.

Vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan said Williams' routes were like "night and day" from a year ago. Williams went a step further.

"Light years," he said.

I might be reading the signs wrong, but everything here shows Henry is working hard and feels he has something to prove (which he does). I'll take that as a positive, even if the defense wants him to chill.

I have read decent things about Martin Nance in the Vikings camp. Don't have a link right now but have heard some good things and the Vikings WR corps is "less than stellar" so anyone in that camp might be worth watching.

Let's see...Henry ran for less than 1,000 yards in his college career and never averaged more than 3.5 yards a carry. While workouts proved he has superior athletic ability, he has never proven he can be a successful running back. Now, during mini camp, he keeps his head down and runs into defenders during a drill in which he should try to avoid contact. Yes, he is a rookie who is probably nervous and will become more comfortable with his surroundings. But until he proves he is actually capable of the vision needed to become a good NFL running back, he has given no one a reason to think he will be successful.

So while it is obvious that White and Henry are more talented then Ganther. White's lack of work ethic as told by one of his veteran leaders plus Henry's track record of mediocrity makes this a situation worth keeping an eye on if Ganther continues to do well.

Fair enough.

 I listen to sports radio in Nashville most mornings, although for only 10 minutes, and haven't heard anything here yet.
I read something on ESPN website and I also read something on a Titans message board. The ESPN piece was done by Pasquarelli.http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/col...&id=2882365

The message board link I can't find anymore.
PM please, I'm not an insider. :(

I do not know if you know this or not but not all websites/messageboards are searched when using google.Example: An article on a teams message board that requires registration will not show in google searches.

Dante Rosario, an H-back/TE rookie out of Oregon, has been showing great speed and could push Jeff King and Michael Gaines for some playing time if he keeps it up.

Until I hear multiple people (coaches, teammates, scouts, etc.) repeatedly praising a player I'm going to ignore most of the names listed in this thread.

I do like the potential this thread has.
