Wake me when the Ice Buckets stop (2 Viewers)

I've got no gripe with giving to charities and you guys are doing wonderful things with the giving and efforts you're making above. I never said charity or helping good causes was a bad thing. Nor did I complaint about anyone's loved ones or their afflictions. Just giving you my two cents about the motivations of the people who tend to be participating in this, at least on my Facebook wall. No need to take it personally, and may you enjoy your videotaped ice baths.
All charities have a problem with getting noticed.

Here's why this is a good thing - http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=710961#entry17117711 Post 2

Seems like the money/awareness is a genuinely good thing. Who cares if someone is getting 1.5 seconds of attention on the facebook? If you don't like the attention, quit being a 13 year old girl and get off the social media teet, Nancy.

And yes when I'm calling you out for being an attention whore, you've got a problem. All of Facebook has a problem.
My daughter describes this state of mind as "totes jelly".
Yeah. If only I could find a video camera and could register a social media account somewhere.
The next time you feel the urge to start a thread whining about how awful your life is, I encourage you to make a charitable donation instead. It doesn't have to be to ALS research - I don't want anyone to think you're just trying to feed a need for attention and inclusion. But find some cause that you think is making the world a better place, and help them out. IMO a gesture like that will go a long way towards making these ice bucket videos less annoying to you.

I have this friend, and his dad worked hard his whole life. One of the kindest men I ever met. Over the years of his life, he saved up to buy a farm in the country that had a big out-building. He outfitted that building with the best wood working tools a guy could have. It was his dream to work with his hands and do wood working until the day he died, peacefully in the country.

3 months after he retired, he contracted ALS. At 65 years old. Imagine the cruelty of fate for a guy who worked his whole life to be able to work with his hands, only to have those hands, and body, betray him right after achieving that dream.

He was dead within a year. Seeing his sons face at the funeral told me all I needed to know about this horrible disease.

Keep the ice buckets coming, because it is a horrible, horrible disease....statistics be damned.
Feels weird liking your post but good posting. I knew somebody that was taken by this terrible terrible disease as well. My guess is is that the OP never knew anybody that has had this disease or even knows anything about the disease itself. Imagine having to watch yourself die a very slow death over a period of two years.

Keep the ice buckets coming! There is no known cause, no cure and life expectancy after symptoms first appear is 2-5 years, usually on the short end of that spectrum. Any money donated to help find a cure is money well spent.

It was cute last week. Now I can't escape these. Flooded the airwaves and the social media. Is this the biggest attack of innerweb bandwidth since dial-up and those 15 minute email attachment downloads only to find another copy of the dancing baby? Uga chucka, uga chucka

The only good one I've seen so far is Weird Al's: http://youtu.be/1nYjEF6e_n8
You are right, the fact they have increased awareness of ALS in donations of more than 400% I would say it is an attack to.

The fact you take the time to start a thread to complain about it is funny. I didnt read the 3 pages and I'm sure some other classy people agree with you, but I would put the smart money on the 3 pages of this thread not turning out well for you.
Some of you need to get off your high horses and lighten up a little. Instead of indignation how about you post some actual good ice bucket challenges videos like I and others have.

And for the record I had a relative pass last year from MSA (similar to ALS) and I live everyday with a wheelchair bound person that relies on me to get in and out of bed, use the bathroom, and provide an occasional heimlich maneuver.

So it's really just a form of bullying?
It could be positive reinforcement for those of us who don't have friends and thus no worry of being challenged

always be lookin' at the bright side ;)

brohans i do not know how any one can get mad at people for doing good and having a little fun doing it and putting up some pictures about it if you are such a wretched soul that seeing some one else do good for a good cause makes you mad then maybe sit down and think about what matters because you are doing it wrong take that to the bank brohans

I give to charities all the time.

Tons if righteous indignation in here huh.

Agreed. This post in particular:

I guess what is particularly annoying and dorky is the people doing this are doing it for vanity, and to be joiners, not because they ever gave a crap about ALS, not because they're super generous. They're just starved for attention and inclusion.

Yes, look at you. With your bucket. And the ice. Finally the excuse I always wanted to post a video to Facebook!!!
;)

If I get nominated, I'm doing a video of just me saying that I'm going to donate $50 and challenge anyone that chose to be an attention whore and just dump water over their head to actually donate at least $10 to ALS because anyone can afford at least $10.
I thought that's what people were doing?

I'm actually looking forward to being challenged now, because not only am I going to publicly challenge Otis now, but I am going to "ice" him.

Totally inconsistent with the character you play here. My encouragement for donation instead of starting your next self-pity thread stands, regardless.

Pretty high bar set by that guy who came in here and said people doing the ice bucket challenge didn't give a crap about ALS and are just in it for vanity and inclusion.

We just recently founded a pediatric cancer charity (501©(3) application pending) and are busy planning fundraising efforts on various fronts. In terms of development and fundraising, if you aren't figuring out ways to tap into things like "vanity" and "joining" you aren't doing your job. That's why charities recognize people and corporate sponsors as "diamond-level" in gala programs, or why they put their names on a plaque in the facility, or hold banquets in their honor. Sure, there will be people who give simply because they believe in the mission, or because they have been particularly affected by what the charity aims to address. Others will give because they want their name out in the community, because they want to be known as charitable and philanthropic. Still others will give because it's good for business. These are all valid reasons to give, and every charity should know and understand this. In the end, our mission is to help children with cancer and their families, and it serves that mission to understand what motivates people to give.
Totally different thing in my view, it sounds like a wonderful cause and organization and I wish you well with it.
Be forewarned, I WILL be hitting you up when the time is right.

Spot on Brohan

I am now being told that I should do it in my suit.

I think my friends are having way way way too much fun with this thing knowing I hate cold water.

Your view is pretty wrong. I'm on the board of a pretty big charity here in town and we spend a lot of time talking about how we can differentiate ourselves through things like this. There are thousands of organizations out there that deserve your charitable dollars. The ones that are going to get them are the ones that make giving to their particular cause socially preferable to the others, which is exactly what this is doing.BB - I'm sure you have lots of people smarter and more versed in this stuff than I am, but if you ever need anything I would be happy to try to help.

It will run its course. In the meantime, it's raised over 13million for ALS, an amount I guarantee would have taken them 10 years to raise if this wasn't circulating.

Sorry if your facebook feeds or instagram feeds are overwhelmed by this and not vague political statements or pictures of food.

When we as a society complain about people doing good at no cost/harm to us, we've really fallen.
Agreed. As long as people are donating money, who cares. I think it's lame when people do it just so they don't have to donate. Hell, even if you donate $10, that's still something.

The video I just saw went something like this: I will not be dumping, I will be donating to <insert something that isn't ALS>. I will not be nominating anybody. I will suggest donating to charity that means something to you. Stop dumping and start donating.

you know what this board should do? instead of #####ing and moaning about this (and for the record, I think this is the stupidest LAM going), we should pick a charity, like breast cancer research or even the ASPCA, or something that has effected the vast majority here (lord knows I read effin thoughts and prayers threads daily) and pay it forward. I don't know if this has been done, but IBC via a thread.

just get a charity, get a poster and nominate 3 posters to donate, wa la.

everyone here pulls six figures, should be easy.....or, we can just ##### and moan.

Great compilation of fails here. Some are likely repeats from earlier buzzfeed, but single video is easier.

I strongly support anything that can bring us that.
Holy cow, someone's going to get a broken neck from a cooler or trashcan being dropped on their head from 10 feet.

The kid with the football helmet maybe already did :oldunsure:

The pit bull one was :lmao:

ALS is a terrible disease as many have mentioned and this thread shows what a self absorbed arrogant look at me piece of crap Otis is.
